I have visited Amsterdam many times (at least ten visits) and know quite a bit about the City, have local friends, and get around quite a bit. But this book delivers! I learned about so many places I have never seen or heard of, and I can't wait for my next visit to check so many of the new out. I also travel to London a lot, so I bought the London version---equally delightful! Highly recommend.

I recently bought the third edition of *The Spiritual Exercises of ECK* by Harold Klemp after owning the second edition for years. This book has 131 spiritual exercises for understanding dreams, solving problems, achieving self-mastery, Soul Travel, meeting true spiritual guides, protection, and more. Practicing these simple exercises for 15 to 20 minutes a day allows me to get in direct contact with the Light and Sound of God, the Holy Spirit (ECK). I can now contact my own Inner Guidance, know the causes of my own problems and how to solve them, learn from past-life and present-life lessons, and experience spiritual freedom from so many of the troubles that plague mankind. These exercises (especially the HU) give me greater understanding of relationships, personal choices, and how to go beyond human ignorance and suffering. I’m unfolding in love and wisdom, developing more self-confidence, tapping into wells of creativity, seeing fears disappear, and appreciating miracles all around. The Spiritual Exercises of ECK also give me the means to meet and learn from ECK Masters who are always available and willing to teach when “the student is ready†and asks. I’m very grateful for this book that shows me how to continue changing my life in every way for the better.
Loved this exercise . . .I sent my brother a copy of this book and he loved it also, particularly the exercise called "Movie Screen." In the past, I hadn't been successful using my spiritual "inner vision." I had always thought, when closing my eyes, I had to look straight ahead, and look for a black screen. I would stare at the place between the eyebrows or third eye, getting nothing more than a headache. This exercise confirmed that a black screen wasn't necessary. Gray or white was ok and to look about 10 degrees to the side. I did. Then from the then right corner of my eye I saw a soft, beautiful, parklike setting!When I repeat this exercise and can go back to the park and walk around. Amazing.I guess before now I had been trying too hard. It is really hard to find a book that deals well with such a subjective topic. My brother and I recommend I the book.
The Spiritual Exercises of ECK by Harold Klemp is one of my favorite books (both hard copy and Kindle). It has helped me get through some very challenging times, given me new insights on my life, and helped me to make my life more meaningful and enjoyable. There is an exercise I have used repeatedly called "Controlling Your Own Mind"--an absolute life-saver, and one that anyone facing difficulties can use. It kept me from melting down when we were facing the real estate meltdown of a few years ago. Then there is the "Broom Technique", to sweep away obstacles that keep you from achieving a rightful goal. We used it when an important package hadn't arrived. We had done our part but somehow, there was a blockage that kept the delivery from being completed. Within one day of practicing this exercise, the package arrived--after a 3 week wait! This is not a magic wand to make up for what you didn't do; it's a way to see beyond the limitations you build up in your own mind, preventing your goals from manifesting.But The Spiritual Exercises of ECK goes beyond just solving day to day problems. These exercises give you a better picture of who you really are and what your true mission in life is.To unlock a wellspring of your own creative energies, crack open this book and find a key! It will open doors for you that will change your life for the better.
As good as any of the best ECK books. I am not a practitioner, but study (and apply) many different traditions. You can't go wrong with book.Just remember that we live in a camouflage reality, so if the exercises don't agree with your modality, that doesn't mean they don't work, just try something else, or imagine your own.
How many ways are there to reach the inner worlds? How many different methods are there? I tried a few of these exercises and I guess you'll have to read it to find out. Simple methods, that produce powerful experiences inside.
Many people in the world meditate to create calm and a feeling of being centered. This book takes inner work into an entirely new level. With simple active exercises this book took me to levels of heaven where I regularly experience the Light and Sound, the twin pillars of God. I do this before I go to sleep and watch my dreams nightly. Before I found these exercises life was quite random. Now, it has direction. I have met ECK Masters and other high beings who show me the best direction for me to take in my life. Even in every day simple things! Highly recommend.
Every exercise helps me to expand my consciousness. SO helpful to have a roadmap to do that. I wouldn't go to a foreign country without a travel guide if I wanted to experience it fully. It's the same with our spiritual travels.
I followed many of the exercises in this book. They changed my life. I have found balance and freedom and love in many things. I have been grateful to have a few key healings and have accomplished much in my life given the techniques in this book.It is nice because it is also not an beginning-to-end book. I could flip through it to find a topic that interests me and went from there. It's an easy read on a Kindle too.

Shimon Peres has been a hero of mine for the past 35 years. However, the insights provided in this book had me admiring and respecting him even more. I think it should be required reading for all who have even a passing interest in the creation of State of Israel. It is not scholarly, but instead puts a human face on all that is Israel, and written by a poet. More importantly, in a time when we are lacking principled leadership around the World, especially here in the U.S. and Israel, for that matter, he is a prime example of moral leadership in challenging times. If only the world had more leaders like Shimon Peres, we would be much better off. It is a wonderful read that leaves one in awe. I strongly recommend.
I normally read with pen and paper so as to recall ideas that seem important to me. However, Peres's story was too interesting to put down so as to write.It seems to me that in the Epilogue Peres was unable to look past ethnicity if not race to imagine a world wherein everyone first appreciates each fellow citizen as they are where they are. Peres wanted Israel to be the instrument or channel of peace.Only when a person demonstrates individual dissidence against civic integrity may statutory justice be called on to maintain mutual, comprehensive safety and security.The preamble to the U.S. Constitution tacitly offers fellow citizens individual happiness with civic integrity. It is understandable if Peres never seriously considered the U.S. preamble's offer to fellow citizens: So far, fellow citizens have not created the evidence that the U.S. preamble's agreement can aid the establishment of a civic culture.

He was impressed and asked her if she would like to come to work for one of his magazines--Vogue. At age of 19 Lee became a cover girl for Vogue and was dubbed the embodiment of the modern girl. She was the official model for the legendary "flapper." Soon she was in demand by most of the most famous photographers in America including Edward Steichen and Arnold Genthe. Tiring of being just a New York celebrity-model Lee was soon back in Paris where in a single day she became the traveling companion, mistress, model, muse, photography assistant and student of photographer Man Ray. Through him she became a member of the Surrealists and lived and moved among the great artists and writers living and working in Montparnasse at the time. Her early associations with these world famous artists would change her life. Under Man Ray's tutelage she slowly began a transformation from being in front of the camera to being behind it. She eventually received additional photographic training at the Clarence White School along with another soon-to-be-famous woman photographer Margaret Bourke-White. After marrying a wealthy Egyptian and going slightly crazy as a member of the "Black Satin & Pearls" expatriates living in Cairo, Lee found her mission in life by another unlikely event rivaling her earlier "Grace Kelly-like" discovery by Conde Nast. World War II broke out while Lee awaited its predicted arrival in London. Unbelievably she was soon working as a war photographer for Vogue magazine. Through her good looks, charm, talent and stealth she was soon the only woman photographer covering the front lines of the European battlefront. World War II was the highlight of Lee's photography career. She took to being a successful war correspondent like a duckling takes to water. She was tireless, talented, resourceful and finally fulfilled through accomplishing important work. Changed by her war experiences, (an early example of Post-Traumatic Stress) she never quite received the same sense of satisfaction for her later work, but she was no longer as restless after having fulfilled some indefinable need in her naturally adventurous personality. For a beautiful woman (Picasso painted six bare breasted portraits of her during one summer), she was able to shake off the handicap of being a NY celebrity and actually accomplishes some important work that fulfilled her innermost needs. She was no longer just Lady Penrose, but her own person with her own considerable accomplishments. When Queen Elizabeth knighted her husband fellow Surrealist Roland Penrose in 1966, it didn't turn her into a snob. She sometimes jokingly referred to herself as "Lady Lee of Poughkeepsie." There is a lot of humor in this biography. Except for a few boring moments during her "Black Satin & Pearls" experience in Egypt, this exhaustively researched book is difficult to put aside. During the hours spent reading the WW II segments I would stop reading and find myself disoriented to be back in the present time and not on the European battlefields. That's powerful writing at work.Lee Miller was much more than Vogue's personification of the "quintessential flapper." The reader can have fun comparing the Vogue cover of 19-year-old Lee as the epitome of the stylish modern New York woman with another picture of her washing off six-weeks of hard-won war correspondent grime while bathing in Hitler's personal bathtub in his captured Munich home. Unfortunately, she reported the bath reminded her too much of her recent, terrifying photo coverage of the liberation of Dachau and it's "bathhouse gas chambers."

I bogged down in the first half of this book. I was annoyed that the author didn't mention whether Lee's rapist was ever prosecuted. Child abuse is so upsetting. After that, Lee's years as a beautiful young woman in Paris who was as sexually "liberated" as the hippies of the 1960s was frankly boring me. I put the book aside for several months, but then picked it up again and got into the war years. This was absolutely fascinating. Lee was amazing as a photo journalist in WWII. She was a remarkable woman. This book gives very interesting glimpses into the war and post war Europe.
An amazing life only told in a so-so way. I forced myself to continue but it didn't get better.

Writing about Lee Miller is like writing about Earnest Hemingway. It can't be anything other than fascinating. Miller lived an extraordinary life on both sides of the lens. Her young body captured by her lover Man Ray (and her father) is a thing of beauty yet so are her incredibly arresting images of everyone from Charlie Chaplin to a broken and beaten German prison guard. Miller knew what she wanted and like Hemingway, let nothing or no one get in her way. And, like Hemingway, once she achieved it all, disillusion wormed its way in along with pills and booze which took her beauty and damaged her sense of humor. My chief complaint with this book is the amount of time Carolyn Burke dedicates to describing Lee Miller's images rather than showing them. It's the difference in describing sex and having it.
Model, journalist, photojournalist -- her participation in coverage of World War II in Europe was both atypical and showed splendid bravery.

I started following a ketogenic diet about 7 months ago. I lost 15 pounds quite quickly, but then I started to feel... off. Without going into details, I'll simply say that last month it got to the point where I was starting to think something was seriously wrong and was researching doctors. Then I was given the opportunity to read this book.I've been researching the ketogenic diet for quite awhile so when I started this book, I was a little skeptical that there was anything else I could learn. I was wrong. Craig and Maria have done a wonderful job breaking down the science in a way that's easy to understand. Their knowledge and experience show you how to be successful on keto and how to break through plateaus so you can achieve your health goals. This isn't a "this is how keto works for me and my body so it should work for you too" book, it's a "this is how the human body works, how keto affects the human body, and how you can be successful with keto all based on science". There are also chapters dedicated to discussing the benefits of keto and how to heal your body - it's not all about weight loss. I knew keto was a good way to eat, but I had no idea how many syndromes, diseases, and even cancers that can be reversed through a clean keto diet.As I read, I found the answers to why I wasn't feeling right and how to fix it! It's only been a few weeks, but I'm already feeling better. This will definitely be a reference for me for years to come. If you're looking into the ketogenic diet, this book should definitely be where you start!

The following reasons are why I consider “Keto†to be their best work, and my personal favorite:1) This book explains the science behind the diet in a readily understandable fashion and provides the tools necessary to follow the diet for weight loss and incorporate it into your lifestyle for long term success.2) They explain in detail why the traditional food pyramid is unhealthy and inferior to the ketogenic food pyramid.3) It explains the importance of hormones, the impact the foods that we eat have on them, and why the obesity epidemic has gripped the Western diet due to it.4) This book gives the reader a quick and ready plan to get into ketosis and stay on the plan long term. It provides a path to weight loss and contains an essential section on how to modify the diet to help with the treatment of various illnesses that are often comorbid with obesity.5) They clarify the common myths associated with the ketogenic diet, false perceived dangers, and bad habits that are spread on the internet that stall weight loss.6) This book explains in detail multiple options for how to overcome stalled weight loss, and also explains intermittent fasting and its various benefits.7) They give excellent advice on how to continue an exercise regimen and burn fat more effectively than someone working out on a traditional carbohydrate rich diet.8) I believe that the best part of this book is how it explains which specific food sources, especially fats, are the most effective for weight loss while eating ketogenic. First, I just love the recipes in the Comfort Foods book—every one we’ve tried has been a big hit. So I’m planning to get more of her recipe books—they all look awesome! The “Dairy-Free†and “Restaurant Favorites†are next on my list.Back to this book, though! We pretty much figured out how to live a Keto lifestyle from the internet and Pinterest. Some good things happened and we knew we were on the right track, BUT THIS BOOK PUTS IT ALL TOGETHER! Honestly, one of the things that drew me to Maria’s books and perspective was that she is so lean herself! Not “skinny†but very lean with no extra fat at all. I don’t need to lose a bunch of weight and my husband doesn’t either, but 20 pounds of fat would be great, and to be lean like that would be amazing. So she’s inspiring that way, too, and I can trust her recipes because they are how she and eats and lives (as well as her family). This book explains how it all works, scientifically and practically. (from the perspective of both Maria and her husband, Craig). I also appreciate the “realness†and vulnerability—she has many personal stories to let the reader know it hasn’t always been this way for her and how living a Keto-adapted life has changed her body and outlook. I’d recommend this book before any others for someone wanting to get started with the ketogenic diet. And then her recipe books...!!!

It would have been useful to include that material right in the book. Still, it's a good read and a worthwhile purchase. He offered some tips I otherwise would have never thought of.

Thomas Mullen is the author of The Lightning Men, Darktown, and The Last Town on Earth, which was named Best Debut Novel of 2006 by USA TODAY. He was also awarded the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for excellence in historical fiction for The Many Deaths of the Firefly Brothers and The Revisionists. His works have been named to Year’s Best lists by The Chicago Tribune and USA TODAY, among others. I don't even know where to start with this book. It is equally parts a mystery and a history lesson. I was a little overwhelmed with this book. Knowing that the incidents in this story are very factual based on the time period, it was very hard to swallow at times.I am not going to go into big detail about the plot and subplots in this story. Just know that everything in this book is connected with a result of the big picture at the end.I loved getting to know the characters in this book. The relationships between white cops and the black cops is a big part of this story. The trust and mistrust between them is more than realistic than I could have imagined.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The only drawback of this book is the tidbits of unnecessary information that drew the story out but had no insight to add to the story. Aside from that, this book was a good read.
Mullen's novel is absorbing and tense, filled with the history of race relations in the aftermath of the Second World War. There is a lot of story here - and indeed my one criticism would be that the author sticks solely to the action. I would have liked to get to know the protagonists and their stories even better, even to the extent of the more mundane parts of their lives and relationships. The almost exclusive focus on action/decision moments, while thrilling, seem to rob the story of perspective. But this is a minor quibble - Darktown is a fast, entertaining and enlightening read.
The setting for Darktown is 1948 Atlanta where vote-getting motivations led to the hiring of eight African-American officers (I have to use current phraseology) in the previously all white Atlanta Police Department. I'm writing this as a retired white educated baby-boomer who grew up as a Yankee. The name of the novel depicts its grim setting -- Jim Crow racism, lynchings, as well as corruption and cruelty in the police department. I found the novel enormously compelling, however, and there were situations where what should be inhuman behavior really got to me. Two key players among the African-American officers were Lucius and Sam. They are complex characters who found themselves making nearly impossible decisions in a threatening environment. A key part of the novel were the travails involved in solving the murder of a key female character. One small shred of relief occurs when Lucius builds a partnership with a white policeman. Darktown is a powerful novel. It depicts an era that is a shameful part of U.S. history. Would that none of this exists in 2017. Unfortunately, in our current political environment, too many reprehensible attitudes and behaviors continue to manifest themselves.
As one who grew up in the Atlanta of this period, Darktown dredged up memories long (and best) forgotten. This was what we called “the reign of terrorâ€. All the historic figures ring true as do many of the recounts of savagery. My parents never understood why blacks would ever want to integrate with whites thinking most as redneck savages. Darktown will make you wonder too.
Set in the late 1940s in the still dormant, old-ways Southern city, Atlanta, GA, this book is a penetrating, at times excruciating, examination of race relations in that era and the vigilante-like efforts of the white police force to suppress blacks, all the while often engaging in all manner of criminal activities. Atlanta, from some minimal do-gooder instinct, has just hired eight black policemen, all WWII vets, to patrol black neighborhoods. Of course, the prejudice remains: they cannot enter the main police station, cannot drive a patrol car, cannot make an arrest, cannot investigate a crime, cannot wear the uniform outside exact hours of the shift, etc. And the entire police force is overtly hostile towards them. That is the environment in which new officers Lucius Boggs and Tommy Smith must operate.When they observe a middle-aged white man hit a utility pole, in so-called “darktown,†furthermore with a black girl as a passenger who seems to have been assaulted, all they can do is call in a white team. As happens all too often, they can do nothing when the man is allowed to go free and the female flees from the car. Days later when the girl is found shot dead and hidden in a garbage heap, Boggs and Smith make it their mission find justice for her. The hurdles and dangers that they face as they dig up information while attempting to fly under the radar would deter most anyone. The run afoul of an underground, ex-cop dirty works group. When their quest takes them outside of Atlanta, matters become even more harrowing.It’s an okay mystery, but it’s even better sociology. There are any number of episodes, some incidental, that the author touches upon that make startling clear the immense difficulty of being black in a racist society. The author is not on soap-box – he doesn’t have to be.
This is an excellent book, blending the historical information ( the first black police officers on Atlanta's police force in 1947 ) with a page-turning crime. Politics, police corruption, and discrimination are part of the narrative. Many of the situations faced by the black officers were hard to read about. Great characterization, excellent writing.
Liked it. Better than I expected, did not expect a "racial" novel. Learned a lot about what went on in the fifties in Atlanta. Very interesting story about how the white and black cops were separated in everything they could do and what they had to do it with. Will read the second in the series when it gets to a price I can afford.
