Betrayed: The Shocking True Story of Extortion 17 as told by a Navy SEAL's Father, by Billy Vaughn

About the Author

Billy's son, Special Operations Chief (SEAL) Aaron Carson Vaughn (DEVGRU), was one of America's most elite warriors... one of the 300. He was engaged kinetically in the Global War on Terror and his heart beat passionately for the republic he loved. On 6 Aug, 2011 he, along with 29 other rough, fearless, American warriors, stepped into a CH-47D Chinook chopper in the black of night and headed to a mission from which they would never return. As Billy and his wife, Karen began searching for answers, their eyes were opened to vile atrocities being played out on America's military. They quickly came face-to-face with their worst nightmare...our boys shouldn't have died that night. The downing of Extortion 17 was at best unnecessary and at worst a negligent, reckless loss of life. Political games, criminal Rules of Engagement and Washington's total, wanton lack of regard for the battles our fearless warriors face on a nightly basis finally culminated in the greatest one-day loss of life in the history of Naval Special Warfare. If these atrocities had ended on August 6, 2011, Billy's battle would never have begun. But multitudes since have breathed their last --at the hands of the same disgusting lack of regard and/or criminal behavior. Our defenders deserve to be defended. The burden of their covering rests on us, the patriots of this nation. It is imperative that we stand together and demand change. Although Billy cannot be engaged in this war kinetically as Aaron was, he feels the absolute need to be engaged culturally.

I read this book in a day and had a hard time putting it down. It starts by giving you the history and background information of one of the seal VI team members, it finished with many different ideas/facts/history why this happened. Before Benghazi was Extortion! Its a different cover up on different govt officials and situations, but its the same govt officials involved in the cover up of many dead. Anyone see a pattern... Cough cough... Glad the father wrote this book for the exposure of the evil in our own govt, as well as, to keep the memory of his amazing son alive as the hero he was.

Mr. & Mrs. Vaughn, my condolences to you and your family. I served in the U.S. Navy for 21+ years. I was not a SEAL! However, I am still Aaron's brother. We are both Chief Petty Officers and also U.S. Navy Sailors! I loved this book. As difficult as it was for you to write, I'm glad you shared it. The peace of God that surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Every American should read the books centered around the government of President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton and learn...they were not patriots. Liberals will always like their "anti USA views". I find their actions unconscionable.

Without question, this is one of the most powerful accounts of modern warfare I have read. This is the tale of Extortion 17, call sign of a US military C-47 Chinook helicopter, that was shot down in Afghanistan, killing Navy SEAL Aaron Vaughn, his SEAL buddies, the flight crew and a group of Afghani troops. Told by Aaron's father, Billy Vaughn it is a shocking and deeply personal tale of a true American hero and how he and his brother SEALs were betrayed by his country's government. I recommend this book unreservedly.

This shocking true story about Navy Seal, Aaron Vaughn and the mission known as Extortion 17 is a real eye opener and a heartfelt story. Billy Vaughn went to great legenths to get at the sad truth behind the loss of members of Seal Team VI and their flight crew. The book is also a warning about where this country is headed if we don't get our priorities straight and stand up for ourselves and our country. You will not regret reading this book!

The facts presented in this book are disturbing on so many levels. It sickens me and saddens me to know our young men and women in uniform are truly being betrayed for political agendas. This book should be a must read for EVERY American. We must all as a Nation stand up and tell our leadership that this will no longer be tolerated! Our military members will gladly lay down their lives for us, no questions asked. The very least we can do is equip them to get the job done with the very best training and equipment, empower them to do the job, over-haul the ROEs and UCMJ, and allow them to adequately defend themselves. We must know that their leaders "have their backs" and unfortunately that is not now the case.

Great read about a sad story that should never have happened.A father's story of a larger than life son who was inspired by 9-11 to become a Seal. The tragedy of loosing that son in an helo shootdown that should never have happened. The further story of a coverup and deception that's become all too common today. When it seems the coverup and lies can go no further the author unveils another level of corruption and deception. Most disturbing were the notes regarding conversations with senior military officers with line responsibility for special forces in the region (unless control has been delegated to other commanders)What's especially disturbing is that the costly lessons so tragically learned at Desert 1, Somalia and Tarkur Gahr were so casually forgotten by the armchair generals and politicians running the so called war. Desert 1 taught the special forces that their missions demanded both special air assets and pilots. Somalia taught us the hard lessons snd high of going to war without taking critical assets (AC-130's), especially when they are left behind for political reasons.Extortion 17 taught us again the highly predictable cost of not using the right equipment, the right pilots and of neutering the AC-130 gunships. The difference between the helos is the difference between your family sedan and a NASCAR racer. It can do things your car can not do. The difference between the guard pilots and the special operations pilots is the difference between a highly skilled chauffeur, perhaps with some defensive driving skills , and the capabilities of an experienced racer. There's also the issues of lack of planning, swapout of the Afghan troops, lack of attention to the landing zone and approach until the last moments and the willingness to send American troops into battle in a helo which should have been in the junkyard while breaking most every rule of sound operations.Digging further it's trying to wage war on the cheap while shoveling trillions into social programs, wall street bailouts, insider deals and "assistance" to those who have promised to kill us. Add to this a military which is rapidly being purged of officers who are deemed to be too loyal to the Constitution and not pliable enough for the administration. Flowing into the gaps are officers who have reversed the age old pledge of a military officer to rank his concerns as mission - men - me with the me at the low end of the priorities, not the top.Yes, the author's passions and grief get in the way of objective writing on occasion; however, it took someone with this highly focused passion to bring the story into the light. For that I am grateful and highly recommend this outstanding book.

Being I'm a 65 year old housewife I wasn't sure I could read a complete book on war. This book isn't just about a war, but a road that most of us don't have to travel. I ended up reading it in two nights. Billy Vaughn takes us through the horrifying details of losing his only son in combat. A mission that was doomed from the very start. It is a touching story about an administration that harbors deceit and half truths. The Vaughn's Christianity comes across loud and clear, the saving grace that one day soon they will be reunited with Aaron. I would highly recommend this book. May God bless Billy and Karen.

Amazon.com Review

The thorniest scientific problem of the eighteenth century was how to determine longitude. Many thousands of lives had been lost at sea over the centuries due to the inability to determine an east-west position. This is the engrossing story of the clockmaker, John "Longitude" Harrison, who solved the problem that Newton and Galileo had failed to conquer, yet claimed only half the promised rich reward.

From Publishers Weekly

While sailors can readily gauge latitude by the height of the sun or guiding stars above the horizon, the measurement of longitude bedeviled navigators for centuries, resulting in untold shipwrecks. Galileo, Isaac Newton and Edmund Halley entreated the moon and stars for help, but their astronomical methods failed. In 1714, England's Parliament offered #20,000 (equivalent to millions of dollars today) to anyone who could solve the problem. Self-educated English clockmaker John Harrison (1693-1776) found the answer by inventing a chronometer?a friction-free timepiece, impervious to pitch and roll, temperature and humidity?that would carry the true time from the home port to any destination. But Britain's Board of Longitude, a panel of scientists, naval officers and government officials, favored the astronomers over humble "mechanics" like Harrison, who received only a portion of the prize after decades of struggle. Yet his approach ultimately triumphed, enabling Britannia to rule the waves. In an enthralling gem of a book, former New York Times science reporter Sobel spins an amazing tale of political intrigue, foul play, scientific discovery and personal ambition. Longitude is west to east, east to west. But it's not that simple because, for example, the equator is wider around the earth than the Tropic of Capricorn or the Arctic Circle. Although latitude is fixed by the earth and Columbus could sail a "straight line" in 1492 relative to a fixed latitudinal parallel, longitude made sailors feel they were on a train and looking at another train, trying to determine which one just began moving. After reading a book about Mason and Dixon and all of the incredibly (for me) complex math and astronomy involved, I was slow to begin this book. Author Dava Sobel, however, cuts through all the more complicated principles like a good pre-calculus teacher. I would even suggest this book could appeal to adventurous 8th graders. The history is impressive. The Harrison family were watchmakers, but as very precise and diligent watchmakers competitive with the Royal Society and haughty astronomers like Nevil Maskelyne. John Harrison had size, cost, material, temperature fluctuations, moisture, waves, and many more atmospheric obstacles to confront while those relying on lunar readings went much further to produce much less. For the record, I had never heard of John Harrison. His predecessors include Halley, Tycho Brahe, and Galileo, whose attempts to time the speed of light is briefly retold here. This is summer reading, a hero's tale, good defeating bad, The Little Engine that Could. If you or your child is interested in sailing, navigation, astronomy, inventions, machining, or how the British came to rule the word for a time, this is a book to read and re-read.

I was left hoping for more detail and depth. This story is sort of a biography about a person whom the author explains there is not much known. The subject's work product is and has been well known and studied at length, but there are not enough details about the technology included in this book. At the end of the book the author explains that she purposefully omitted information that she did not think her readers are smart enough to consider. The premise of using a clock to compute longitude is mentioned repeatedly through the first half of the book, but an explanation of the operating principal and technique is only finally hinted at in the later stages of the book. The idea is that at any instant one can correlate "local" time to some known "reference" time as it occurs at some specific reference location and compute the local angle of longitude in relation to the reference location. The clocks being discussed are the devices used to reliably transport the "reference" time for comparative use in other locales. I have been aware of the technique for a long while and it became a guessing game to anticipate when the idea was finally going to be presented to, and shared with, readers. I think that many readers will enjoy the book much more if the premise is described, in detail, in an earlier portion of the story so that it is more obvious why one may appreciate all the great efforts made in the field of horology to achieve a series of incremental advances in performance and reliability. This book reads like a book report or a term paper rather than as a comprehensive book. It seems as if the author knows her subject well, but did not benefit from effective editing and/or insightful guidance regarding the perspective of a reader when formatting the story line into book form. I am surprised that some other more satisfying explanation of the history and circumstances has not been offered as a replacement for this book and its best seller status.

This book is a fascinating history of the development of a mechanical chronometer. The author lays out the historical background and competing interests so that the reader can fully appreciate the challenges faced by John Harrison and his son William. It shows that John Harrison was like the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan (central character in the movie "The man who knew infinity") in that he was poor and therefore self educated. His vocation was carpentry and his intimate knowledge of wood was employed in his first chronometer. He knew how to build sound grandfather clocks and that experience fed into his first chronometer for seafaring. He almost let his £20,000 prize slip away, because he wasn't satisfied with his first clock designed for the sea. Had he resisted the urge to build a better clock before claiming the prize, he would have won the prize out right. Instead, he ended up competing head-on with a lunar distance technique created by people favored by the committee that oversaw the giving of the prize money. The books paints the complex story of Harrison's Great achievements and does so in an easy to read format.

In the age of GPS it is hard to believe that there was a time when sailors could not navigate the seas in safety. This book is so interesting and easy to read, yet it explains the discovery of how to determine Longitude in a way that is fascinating for adults and excellent for young teenagers as well. I always have three copies of the Illustrated book on hand. I give them as gifts all the time. I read this book while I was traveling and I had the opportunity to visit the The Royal Naval Museum, in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard, England, that houses these wonderful clocks. One of my favorite books.
