In about 200 pages Professor Vaidhyananathan presents a very readable history of the copyright in the US and abroad.Originally added to the Constitution to encourage creativity and to improve the democratic process, the copyright has evolved into a series of complex rules that seem to work almost in the opposite direction of the original intent.Have you ever wondered how Mark Twain and Groucho Marx figured into the discussion of copyright issues? If so you can find out in this book - they both had very interesting roles. What about the diversity of legal opinions - from Lawrence Lessig, to the Ninth Circuit, to Mr. Justice Hand - all of who grappled with the rights of the few versus the rights of the many.Added to the history is an intelligent and readable discussion of the policy issues related to the copyright. What kinds of policies will balance the creator's incentives and at the same time improve the level of public discussions? How long should rights survive? What elements should be included in the copyright? What are the reasonable standards for parody? Should there be differing standards for databases, books, movies, music and computer programs? The risk for all of those questions is that they can evolve into hopeless discussions of legal absurdities. In effect, that is what happened with the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.But Vaidhyananathan does not let himself get stuck in all that goo - he deals with each of those issues and more in a concise and interesting fashion. At the same time he has the larger picture of the broader purposes of copyright.You will be challenged and fascinated by this book and the issues it raises.

I have been reading your book and am alternately exhilarated and despairing. From other research on the web on this issue, I keep seeing over and over that without copyright protection, people wouldn't have incentive to create. What a load of muck. Creative people NEED to create. They also need to not starve to death, of course. But creating things in and of itself is rewarding. If money is what motivates someone, they should become stockbrokers or something that more honestly reflects their values. I think that motivation by money, and creativity are almost mutually exclusive; once money becomes the motive, creativity is dead, or at least mortally wounded. I know the thrill of creating. I do art without any compensation at all, because I need to and want to, and have been a computer programmer for years, marvelling that someone was willing to pay me for something that is so much FUN! Creativity is inherently rewarding.

He argues, very persuasively, that the current copyright laws in their punitive and restrictive form y hinder creativity and free expression. Further, he compellingly argues that the original intent of the laws were designed for flexible application to maintain cultural balance.The issues framed in this book encompass the very future of creativity vital to industry, commerce, and free expression. A very enjoyable read even given the somewhat difficult nature of the subject matter.

This will be a very hasty review, which i will get back to and actually do justice to once this semester ends and i will have some time. For now all i will say is that this book was a thoroughly enjoyable read (it is the only university textbook i have sat down and read cover to cover even before the semester started) which gives a brief and well balanced introduction to animal cognition. With the focus being on well balanced. If you want to read about how amazing it that capuchin monkeys can show envy, then this is probably not the book for you, but neither is it the book for those who want to read skinnerian stimulus-response account of animal behavior.This book does what any good textbook should do and that is stick to what is the accepted norm within research on animal cognition. As we learn more, this perspective will change, and so will this textbook, however for now, it maintains a perspective which i believe to be well balanced for a basic introduction to animal cognition.Another commenter commented on its associations to UF, now i can not say anything on the school as a wholes political agenda, but was i will say, as a norwegian left wing liberal, who thinks the democrats are atrociously conservative and the republicans a joke, not once while reading this book did i feel myself being preached to.
I think this is a great book for educational purposes. It gets the basic message of simplistic Animal Cognition across and does it quite well. The book is not written as a traditional textbook, but more of a story. Each chapter builds on the previous and each chapter contains examples from the author's life. In all honesty, it's a fun read not just for students, but anyone who wants to enjoy a good book.On the downside the author of this book is extremely biased. He ignores evidence on purpose, and dismisses evidence quite quickly. I believe that this book is extremely narrow-minded and limited. It's only capable of giving a very basic understanding of Animal Cognition. I also believe that what the book gets across should not be followed at all, except for basic concepts. The reason being again, that the author is extremely biased. I only read this book for leisure, as I did not agree with most of the stuff presented in the book. Even for assignments, I argued against Clive, and I did pretty well on the assignments, which shows that this book is really not that great for educational purposes.With all that said, I still believe it's a great book, but as I said before, only for casual reading, not for extracting useful information.
This is a textbook on the subject of animal intelligence, which is a much better book than the author's popular level book, Do Animals Think? The text includes very lucid descriptions of animal "IQ tests." I have to say that Dr. Wynne has a remarkable ability to explain academic matters in very simple English. However, the book is strangely personal and jaded for a classroom textbook. At one point in this textbook, the author tells a story about a friend bringing him a newspaper article about dolphins having sex just for fun. He tells his friend that the article is "ridiculous." He goes on to say why he thinks the article is "ridiculous" but never states why the article makes such an assertion about dolphins. In other words, he never addresses the researchers' reasons for thinking the dolphins have sex just for pleasure. Of course, he could be correct on all of his points, but I'm warning you before you spend good money on his books: This animal researcher has a strangely hand-waving, dismissive, cynical attititude towards the whole idea of animal intelligence and emotion. It really is very odd. He seems determined to expose what he calls the foolishness of popluar opinion about animals. He wants to say that the scientists or philosophers who believe in animal rights and intelligence (a growing number) are just idealogues, or they are being politically correct. If you are a cynic yourself, check out the "Smart Crow" videos over at Youtube.Now there is something I must tell you. You can take it or leave it. Here it goes: Dr. Wynne teaches at the University of Florida, which is a notoriously conservative institution that propagates Republican thought in economics, political science, religious studies, etc. I'm sorry to have to say this, but it is a well-known, little-advertised fact about UF. I'm sorry but I sincerely want you to know this before you pull out your credit card - Dr. Wynne has a bias, too - which he has been known to admit to at times. If you shop around, you will see that there are some very objective and readable books out there such as Animal Learning & Cognition, 3rd Edition by Dr. Pearce, Minds of Their Own by Lesley Rogers, The Cognitive Animal (multiple authors), Animal Intelligence by Dr. Zhana Reznikova, The Smartest Animals on the Planet by Dr. Sally Boysen, and Cognition, Evolution & Behavior by Sara Shettleworth.As I said, the author is an excellent writer. His thoughts are clearly expressed without academic jargon. This textbook on animal intelligence is probably the most readable textbook on this subject currently in publication. However, his analysis is awful. For example, concerning the mark mirror recognition test on chimps, he argues that mirror recogntion does not indicate self-awareness, because one could imagine a robot being programed to identify itself in a mirror! What a stupid remark! His critique of mirror recognition in dolphins is equally pathetic. He says nothing about positive results (disputed results, however) from research on birds, dogs and pigs. His interpretation of signs of self-awareness in other animals is that they have an "own-body concept." I see this as a clear avoidance of the conclusion that animals have consciousness. You will notice how annoyed the author is at the concept of apes and humans being genetically near identical. He actually attempts to argue that this universally accepted conclusion is incorrect. His work is hyper-critical and selective.

I really liked that there were different types of problems which each give the mind a good workout. The problems are really fun and interesting and require a lot of critical thinking. I purchased this for my daughter who got hooked into and enjoys solving them. Overall the book is awesome! The author also has a facebook page which includes daily problems which are similar in the book. After you solve them you can comment on your answer.
Really enjoying getting to try these out in a relaxed fashion with our students. I really like how each chapter starts off with a few problems, which allows you to experiment and engage with the problems before learning more details about them. Tips and tricks are given to solve them, then there are detailed explanations how to solve them, followed by more practice problems. This is a highly engaging, effective way to learn and be engaged. I am looking forward to using this book with my two kids...and also for myself!

Perfect for learning typing the old-fashioned way - a spiral bound book, with lots of practice in a sensible order. It teaches the home row first, then top row, then bottom row. The other advantage is you are NOT looking at the screen while typing, (I recommend putting a piece of cardboard over the screen while typing so you don't cheat). Then you really memorize the locations of the keys. Both of my homeschooled kids learned with this book around age 11 and they can touch-type perfectly now. Such a useful life skill. I used a $2 plastic brochure holder from the office supply store to hold it upright.We tried all the learn-to-type online programs but they were all too cutesy, or too distracting with their games and pressure to go fast. If you have a child who wants a game for reinforcement I recommend the games on Typing.com. But not the learning lessons. This book is much better.
I first got this book out of the library and was impressed with how easy it was to use. I could type a little but not touch-typing. When I stuck to it, my touch-typing improved dramatically. I have never taken typing lessons and being middle-aged, was afraid I'd never be any good at typing, let alone touch-typing. The author teaches you not only typing but about the keyboard, the best way to sit while typing and other useful information. I especially like how you must look at the book to do the lessons, rather than the screen. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to touch-type.
Don't waste money on online typing tutors. Its about training your brain and fingers and this book is perfect. Online games, skill tracking etc is fluff. This is the real deal
This has been great for teaching my sons how to type. I have them type one page a day and within a couple months they went from not knowing at all how to type to typing about 30 wpm.
I just ordered my 8 year olds first laptop. When I seen this book it took me back to the days when I was in school and how they use to teach us in typing class. Needless to say it's helped her typing a lot. She's definitely ahead of the class when it comes to her computer classes thanks to this book!
I purchased this book for a friend of mine to improve her typing skills. I occasionally develop my own drill pages for her when I think she needs more but that's not difficult to do. I find the print a bit small in this book but definitely workable. It is spiral bound and will stand beside the computer while typing. As for being able to tell when a mistake is made, if this book is being used with a computer, the word processing system will most likely show when a mistake is made.The delivery time was outstanding from Trinity City Books.
A great book to learn your typing skills especially if you're a beginner!! Easy to read and follow. Definitely a great book!
