I had high hopes for this book, but I ended up being a little disappointed and questioning of the author's credibility. While giving an overview of German conquests early in WWII, he includes the assertion that Finland and Sweden were conquered by Nazi armies. First, Finland was a German ally throughout the war, and second, Sweden was famously neutral throughout the war! It's such an egregious factual error that it made me question the credibility of the rest of the book. He later asserts that a "significant portion of the American Army...including the 101st Airborne Division" was surrounded by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. Again, this is just plain dead wrong...the 101st was the ONLY division (of nearly 50) of the American Army in Europe surrounded by the Germans during that battle...or any battle, for that matter. These are issues of the most basic military history that he gets absurdly wrong.I didn't keep notes, so those are the ones that stood out in particular, but there were others that weren't as patently obvious. He also seems to exaggerate the influence of the three Aviators at several points. For instance, he claims one was directed to inform air corps personnel during speeches in N. Africa and the Mediterranean theaters that their minimum tours had been extended. I highly doubt a visiting civilian would be tasked with personally informing thousands of airmen of a MAJOR policy change in their assignments. I suppose it's possible in the remotest sense, but I rolled my eyes at the likelihood of it.He also claims the Doolittle raid essentially led to what ultimately became the Japanese defeat. Hmmm, every other historian and war leaders at the time agreed it's only real value was a morale boost...and nothing more. He also refers to the German JU-88 light bombers that attacked Doolittle's B-17 as one of the most dangerous German planes in their arsenal. Ha! Not exactly. Any single-engine fighter (the JU-88 was a twin-engine light bomber) would have been MUCH more dangerous.These may seem like nit-picks, but they're such basic mistakes, and the more subtle exaggerations were sufficiently commonplace that it left a poor taste in my mouth and led me to be skeptical of the overall factual accuracy of the book. Also, there's really nothing new in it that one couldn't get from any number of biographies of the principals that has already been written. He doesn't really tie in the experiences of the three into any cohesive or overarching premise as to how they collectively...as a coordinated threesome...advanced aviation.Still, I gave it 3 stars, because it IS a fairly entertaining read, I learned a few things (I think...if they were fully accurate anyway), and it's a fast read. Just remember to have some grains of salt on-hand if you do read it.
A jumble of facts (some mistakes) put together to form a book. Not enough time for a good biography of any of the three men chosen. Not really a history of aviation due to lack of timeline and failure to include so many other contemporary contributors. Had way too much personal information on Lindbergh in comparison with the other two men. Made poor use of a great deal of good research. Would recommend spending your time on true biographies/autobiographies in order to get a better sense of the things that these pioneers accomplished. Chuck Yeager, Jackie Cochran, Beryl Markham, the Wright Brothers, and so many other amazing people have written some of the most interesting books I have ever read. Berg' s book on Lindbergh is superb along with Doolittle' s own book on his life.
A nicely done compilation of histories of three of America's most famous and influential aviators. The choice was well made and the story chronicles the parallel lives of Lindbergh, Doolittle and Rickenbacker nicely. There were some jarring and glaring errors that a competent and knowledgeable editor should have caught, i.e: Germany did NOT invade Sweden and Finland during WWII as was otherwise asserted by the author. This was not the only such error, just one of the most memorable. Also some snippy/snarky asides by the author that I didn't feel belonged in this kind of work. Those aside I did very much enjoy the book, would recommend it and might even read it again someday. Would have gotten 4 stars w/o the mis-steps. This was also one of the first Kindle books I've ever read, trying to wrench my 58 year-old self into the 21st century.
This is an engaging, well-written history of three important figures instrumental in the early history of and the development of aviation on a world scale. As an aviation writer myself, I know much of the history Groom covers, but there are certainly revelations in the book that were new to me, especially about Rickenbacker. Similarly, Lindbergh's combat experience in the Pacific was more extensive than I had realized.It could have used a good review by an aviation-savvy editor, however. There are numerous technical descriptions that, while not flat out wrong, aren't very accurate, either. Nonetheless, the book is a quick, informative read that I would recommend for any reader interested in the history of aviation.
I have been a fan of Winston Groom since “Better Times Than Theseâ€. I am an even bigger fan of his non-fiction, finding him a very readable historian with the ability to make the reader “see†history.This book is no exception as the author looks at three larger than life men from the early age of flight.Rickenbacker managed to cram more adventure into one life than most could do in several.Groom presents him as he was, tough, determined and very intelligent.Doolittle is an extra ordinary pilot, instrumental in the development of instrument flight and famous for raiding Japan in 1942.Lindbergh, the “Lone Eagle†is best known for flying the Atlantic and the kidnapping of his son.Somewhat infamous as a supporter of Hitler, his WWII activities are a surprise.This is a very well written book, alternating between the three men while keeping the times in perspective.This is a complete look at these men as the author covers their good and bad activities.

Although the official history of the Jewish Brigade Group (a unit of some 5,000 Jews who fought with the British Eighth Army in Italy in the waning months of the conflict) has been written, Blum (Wanted! Once they learned the true extent of the holocaust, soldiers of the brigade began using intelligence reports to pinpoint the location of former SS officers and camp guards. The enraged Jewish troops took vengeance into their own hands, eventually slaying hundreds of Nazi death dealers. Blum follows the story of three men Israel Carmi, Johanan Peltz and Arie Pinchuk in detail, interviewed dozens of others, read unpublished personal memoirs and had Hebrew-language documents translated for him. During the war, the more daring Jewish soldiers formed a secret unit that appropriated British supplies trucks, weapons and food and diverted them to ships heading illegally for Palestine The plan included the "repatriation" of thousands of war orphans, who were clandestinely taken from displaced person camps and smuggled to Palestine. The underground Jewish Haganah figured prominently in these operations, which contributed directly to the creation of Israel. Adult/High School-There is a perception that during the Holocaust, the Jews rarely physically fought back against the Nazis. The most avid readers of World War II books know that resistance did occur (the best known is the Warsaw Ghetto uprising), but it was not enough to change the course of the genocide. The Brigade tells a different story. A 5000-man "Jewish Brigade" was formed from settlers in Palestine, but it was not until the waning days of the war, in November 1944, that the British sent it to fight. This account is told from the perspective of three soldiers and relies heavily on interviews the author conducted with them. It takes readers from the early days of the brigade, through the frustration of the soldiers who were sitting out the war, to the combat operations of the closing days of the war in Italy. The Jewish Brigade had little impact on the outcome of World War II, but its existence was critical to the future state of Israel. Almost from the very beginning, it was involved in smuggling Jewish refugees out of Europe and into Palestine. This book is not a standard military history, but is written more like a novel. I loved this book...totally riveting and the fact that it is a true story of some of the original "Inglorious Bastards" made it even more interesting. The courage of the Jewish soldiers and their fight to get in on the fight was inspiring. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in this part of history. The books is really well written. An untold story that is really worth a read.
I have read many books about WWII but was not familiar with the Jewish fighters that were finally allowed to go into Italy with the Allies. This book gives a lot of background about the political forces that were at work behind the scenes, first keeping them out of the war, and then allowing this unique group of soldiers to be formed and deployed near the end of the war. That was interesting, but what happened after the war is where the story gets even more intense as these men come to see what was happening to their people, the Jewish people, throughout Europe. I was so pleased they ended the book meeting up with these same men many decades later and telling the rest of the stories of their lives. Very well worth the time for readers wanting to get a wider picture of that terrible time in history.
This is not a historical fiction novel, although it may read like one. Blum has done the almost impossible task of digging out even the storylines from revealing sources. He has cobbled one excellent story from the stories of three separate real men, and the story appears to be of one thread. These very men and hundreds more just like them were responsible for the birth of the modern nation of Israel. Without the personal sacrifices of these men and many thousands more, the nation of Israel would have been stillborn. Thank God for these men!
The biblical history of the Jewish people is one of peaks and valleys, the valley of Egyption bondage, peaks of King David and Solomon, and the valley of the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities as recorded in the minor and major prophets. Then the oppression under the Romans followed by the diaspora. But where there was judgment and attrition, God always provided a remnant, and it is the renmant, the survivors, of WWII that made their way to Palestine. The Jewish Brigade was in the right place at the right time. By accident or fortuitous coincidence? I think not. Read it and decide for yourself.

I have read a great deal about World War II & the holocaust but I was unaware that Jewish soldiers actually fought in the last battles & were stationed there after the war. I was surprised that this helped their effort to create the nation of Israel by transporting people & weapons to their country. It was both tragic & inspirational to be a witness to the amazing events that transpired to the birth of a new nation. It took courage & desperation to achieve what they did. It was an honor to be a silent witness to this great event.

It outlines the reason why the British formed the brigade, where and how the brigade fought, and its instrumentality in the formation and early defense of the State of Israel. It does this through primarily through the eyes of three participants as well as the sister of one of the participants. It is very interesting to read of how the Brigade transported many displaced Jews at the end of the war and how the wartime experiences of members of the Brigade caused them to become extremely vengeful and how they overcame their morale dilemma. A very interesting, well written and researched book.

I would place Musashi-san's Book of the Five Rings on par with classical teachers like Sun Tzu, Laozi. His book lacks detail compared to some of the classics, but that is one of its strengths. He spends approximately 1/6th of the short book on the movements and tactics for sword-fighting, which may be of varying value to readers - depending on their interest on the subject.Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" places emphasis on large scale military operations; which lends itself to modern business (in the mind of the reader, and in many modern expositions on a domain-by-domain basis) - supply chains, market saturation, globalization, operational budgeting, etc., Musashi-san's "Way" is likewise applicable. Musashi-san focuses on large scale and small scale (individual) battle, offering useful comparisons and contrasts. For me, the individual focus was extremely insightful and personal. It may suit individuals who have situations of high responsibility or discretion (e.g., negotiations, debate, martial arts, software development), or cases where an individual does not have an abundance of resources or allies - and opportunity is gained through competition.The book is highly quotable, and I found myself reading this short <100 page book over a month's time because every few pages gave me something to think about, research, mull over, and discuss. Almost paradoxically, his vagueness and insistence that the reader practice, research, and train builds toward a thesis - "By learning one thing, one should know 10000 (myriads)."As a retired IT person and CIS college instructor - my lesson on any topic was not to memorize procedures or things easily looked up in technical references; but principles, how information flows, how to identify processes (and problems in them), to detect the presence of patterns, or put simply "How is this problem or system similar or different from others you've encountered. I wish I had known about this book sooner, as he does an excellent job demonstrating this approach to learning.
Unfortunately I can't give a review on the content as the book I received is incomplete. Yes, every other page is blank. And because I took to long to get to reading it, I can't return it. At least it wasn't very expensive. You get what you pay for I guess.
Reading Musashi is a right of passage. The man was a complete badass, on a level many of us will only ever dream of.That said, he excelled in killing people, not writing books, and this reads exactly how you would expect a world-renowned killer would write. The passages and subjects are scattered and disjointed, and at times make very little sense. Sometimes hes describing precise sword movements and battle tactics, next hes talking about extremely esoteric ideas in a rambling, stream-of-consciousness sort of way.I'd say what you get out of the book is entirely subjective. It's been said that this is the Japanese version of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War." All Japanese executives have read it. Martial arts masters have read it. Historical scholars and enthusiasts as well. If you have the ability to take 18th century martial arts tactics and apply it to modern day situations, you could gain a great deal from this book. If you read it literally... well you may just have a laugh and write it off as the crazy mutterings of an old man.Either way its a cheaply priced, reasonably-sized book, and this is one of the better translations out there. Definitely add it to your collection and give it a go. Plus you'll be able to brag that you've read Musashi, a man who died undefeated with over 60 confirmed kills in martial combat! Total badassery!
