Harvey Stein is a professional photographer, teacher, lecturer, author and curator based in New York City. He currently teaches at the International Center of Photography. Stein is a frequent lecturer on photography both in the United States and abroad. He is the Director of Photography at Umbrella Arts Gallery, located in the East Village of Manhattan. He has also been a member of the faculty of the School of Visual Arts, New School University, Drew University, Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Bridgeport. A recipient of a Creative Arts Public Service (CAPS) fellowship and numerous artist in residency grants, Stein’s seventh and latest book, Briefly Seen New York Street Life (Schiffer Publishing, Ltd.), was published in 2015. Other books of Stein’s photographs are Parallels: A Look at Twins, E.P. Dutton (1978); Artists Observed, Harry Abrams, Inc. (1986); Coney Island, W.W. Norton, Inc. This time in looking and reading Harvey Stein's photograhically evocative book, i felt at a loss. I am not a photograher nor a student or traveling companion on this trip(and many others that i read about in the Preface) i see and feel as a lay person. Many of the reviews spoke about things that i was not familiar with..certain things that fellow photographers know about. Despite my naivete, the book left a lasting impression..i thought about the people, their environs, their rituals..pieces of their lives caught momentarily. It did not feel to me as a happy life, one of joy and happy celebration. It was, for me, life lived in poverty, rubble and seeming lack of joy or smiles. It left me troubled. The fact that it had such an impact is largely due to Harvey's amazing eye for capturing the moment, the bars(feeling like imprisonment) the smiling masks on faces..wondering what lay underneath. ..the cragged, tired looking faces and bodies, and all of a sudden, a little basketed baby sleeping next to shelves of fruit. It was what u do when u have to sell and want to keep an eye on your child. That, for me, was the most tender moment. Harvey is so good at not only photograhy but in making you think about the stories..and when i thought about their stories, i felt a sadness in their struggles..that was what i couldnt get out of my mind. That is why Harvey is so good. He shows you things not always pretty but challenging. Kudos to Harvey to make people think and feel some very complicated emotions. Best, maggi rand
The book was professionally packed (with no chance for damage during shipping). It arrived before estimated date. There is a short essay that accompanies the two photo spread that I included here. If I could change anything about the book... I would very much like to read more of the backstories that swirl around these images. I like the size of the book. All the images are at least 8x10 inches and most are larger than that. There are images on every page... so there has to be more than 150 photos! Harvey is a people photographer and this book is crammed with portraits.
Harvey Stein’s Mexico Between Life and Death, is an intense journey into the heart ofthe place and the hearts of the people.When a photographer returns to a country over so many years, a familiarity and a relationship develops with the subject. Stein’s affection and objectivity combine to reveal a Mexico that is at once tough, scary, tender and fragile.He is in close with the people, with what I suspect is an extremely wide angle lens. Accepted as part of the scene. it’s almost as if the moments are witnessed by an invisible eye, their expressions seemingly unaware or unconcerned with this witness with a camera. In strong black and white images this is a street photography book with brilliant juxtapositions. Stein’s use of the edges of the frame are as important as the center. His fluency with the medium and language of photography, there can be no doubt. these poetic images, finds the transcendent in the ordinary.This is what makes these images remarkable, a documentarian who sees with the eyes of a poet.
This book is a great culmination of 15+ years of visits to several parts of Mexico. The work itself is excellent - some of his best yet. Also, the quality of printing and binding is top notch. Photos are large, with no awkward layouts. The sequencing of the photos is also well thought out. If you are a fan of Harvey Stein, Mexico, or street photography, this is worth having in your collection!

Harvey Stein's eyes--observant, compassionate, and always looking where you might not have thought to look. Here he focuses on the rituals of life and death, but as always his larger subject is the transcendent beauty of the everyday.

The day I got this book, I opened it up to a random page and the first sentence that my eyes focused on was "The Messiah = Moses + 1". I was absolutely stunned. Now that I've started reading the book from the beginning, I can't wait to get back to that page again.As other reviewers have alluded to, the book doesn't explain everything comprehensively beyond any shadow of a doubt,but it does give one a challenging insight into the rich world of Judaic exegesis. I found that if I persevered with the parts that I didn't immediately understand, I nevertheless eventually reached a piece of wisdom I could readily comprehend despite my beginner level of knowledge in matters of Jewish religion and it's literature. I especially appreciated the breakdown on page 24 under the heading The Preservation Of Perfection.If you're reading this review, then this book is for you.

Great out-of-print book. Not clear why it is out-of-print. Previously I would only hear these discourses in shirum for Rabbi's reading and translating the Yiddush. Its great to have the whole thing in English so I can review, study, and share the Rebbe's wisdom with others.

That should be the title of this book. John Patrick writes from his experience and seeing and playing millions of hands of blackjack, not sitting behind a computer. His Big 4 approach is right on and can be applied to anything you gamble on. This book is fun to read, simple, and easy to apply. Anyone who has played blackjack and sat at a real table with real money will quickly appreciate his methods. I have played, watched and tested many of his theories advising against the "book" and he is right on. For 95% of blackjack players, following the advice of this book religiously will save you from losing a ton of money and will actually give you a chance to win. His Basic Craps book is excellent as well.

very informative for the serious person.
I am a fan of John Patrick's thoughts on gambling. However this book has me scratching my head more than any other he has written.On the one hand, I would definitely suggest reading a follow up book containing basic strategy. On the other hand, JP gives a somewhat compelling argument against putting more money on the table when the dealer has a strong up card. He also wants us to pile it on when the dealer is weak. Even if you can't remember basic strategy (buy a strategy card) just remembering these two ideas will help you out a lot.John's books cover how to play, and then the normal ideas about discipline, bankroll, money management, etc. All of this is good information. But his knowledge of the game in this book is the only book he has written where I deviate quite a bit from how he suggests I play the game.
Ok, see a couple of reviews, so you wanna be a loser. These are probably people that went to Vegas and expected to win their fortune in the sky. There is no magic bullet for any casino game and if you go to Vegas expecting to win, don't go. I play by John's systems and diciplines taught and have a great time in Vegas only "donating" a very small amount for 5 days of play, food, drink and entertainment. I have seen very very few people at tables in Vegas use even a fraction of the dicipline taught by John. Great work, John!
Anyone who has read this book and not placed himself as one who Patrick is talking directly to at sometime or other is not being honest. Personally I know that I would have been better off with his win-loss goals and money management techniques as they would have many times made me either less of a loser, or maximized the times when I was winning. I have started trying his techniques and although I don't win big bucks, I don't getkilled either. His conservative deviations from basic strategy I can definitely live with such as not splitting 8's against dealer's upcard of 9, 10, ace. I feel I have gotten a lot of sound, valuable info. from his first book "You wanna be a gambler" and plan on reading his advanced blackjack book.
No one said this book is for the expert. "Blackjack" is for the guys and dolls that go to a casino 2-3 times a year, 2-5 days a trip. For us, the short term is the only thing that matters. The "expert play" in the other books absolutely does cover the long term, but I'll never reach those stats in my life and therefore need to do what I can to help myself in the short term.John Patrick uses a distinctive style of humor to teach the basics of Blackjack (and craps, pai-gow, sports betting, etc) in a manner that will stay with you. He'll let you know why you should always hit your hard 16 against a dealer 7.Yes, if you go to a casino daily or weekly or even monthly, maybe you should consider a more mathematical book to cover your long term play but for most of us Patrick's book will cover us very nicely.
Clearly this book is ridiculously flawed when it comes to basic strategy. BS reduces the house edge to around 0.5%, but JP admits his method reduces it to 1.5%. Hmmm...But his (repeated) messages about discipline and walking away a winner are very good. And the betting schemes he outlines, though not original, are good for a beginner to follow. Certainly they've helped me stay more organized at the table, with less "hunch" betting. Obviously nothing short of counting will eliminate the house edge, but I utilize his money management to this day to help limit my losses and keep my win goals realistic. Worth a read, if you skip the basic strategy section.

Obviously Reid is very passionate and knowledgeable, and I'm very grateful he put the time into this book. By no means is this review meant to bash the author or the material FWIW. However, I found myself disappointed several times while reading the book at the amount of grammatical errors and repetative sentences throughout the sections. Again, obviously Reid is an expert in the topic and I certainly was able to gain the information he was portraying, it is just a little frustrating that the work was not more thoroughly proofed and corrected. Also, I would not be this picky had the book cost 10-15 dollars...for 30.00 I just expected a little more I suppose, and color pictures should have been included at this price.
I had to read the book, first, before I could give an honest review. When I bought the book, there were none. So much for being number one!First, this book is well written. If you've read anything by experienced writers, like Massad Ayoub, you'll notice the same effort for simplicity and clear language. Reid, however, dispenses with formal linguistic rigidity that maks it an easier read.Second, the information is presented with authority by someene who knows and has studied his craft. He gives credit where it is due and names the source of the idea or method he discusses.Third, the information is thorough - ranging from history to drills, ammo to holster requisites.Finally, the spark that caused me to follow Reid on Youtube in the first place is the treatment he gives, albeit brief, on the reasons why this skill set is necessary and basic as a citizen with God-derived rights.Through this book Reid has delivered a sober and compelling treatise fit for reference and practice.And if you got the Kindle version, like me, all the voluminous photos are in glorious black and white.
It was hard to put this book down; I finished it in a couple of evenings. This book is similar to one of Reid's courses in that Reid packs a ton of information in a small space. I appreciate that this book isn't a bunch of theory, but rather a compilation of the experiences and battle proven techniques of great instructors and warriors. The end of the book is comprised of practice and qualification courses of fire from several renown shooting schools. Great book from cover to cover! I plan to read it a few more times!
Hope a second edition is released to correct all the grammatical errors. Was able to discern the intended meaning, however it detracts from the content, which is of great quality.An absolute must read for everyone from new shooters to those advanced in their shooting career.

It is part history lesson, part technique manual, and part guide to improving yourself. I have taken several classes with Reid at Valor Ridge and the book is written exactly as if he is having a conversation with you and passing on his knowledge. The book also contains many useful pictures to help demonstrate the material as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a comprehensive history of pistol craft and to anyone considering formal training at Valor Ridge or any other defensive shooting school (the book lists several other great schools!). This book will become a handy reference and refresher to me and will certainly see a lot of use!
“Pistolcraft†by Reid Henrichs is an invaluable resource for anyone who carries or owns a handgun for personal protection. Reid does an outstanding job in his book at breaking down complex topics into very easy to understand and practical instruction. The book is extremely informative and easy to read. It’s like the author is simply talking to you in your living room. Whether you are new to concealed carry and handguns or have dozens of years of experience under your belt, this book has something for you. It covers a wide variety of topics including; battle tested proven tactics, necessary equipment, the legalities of using deadly force, along with having the proper attitude and mindset to defend yourself with your pistol effectively. There are also loads of pictures demonstrating the techniques discussed in the book for those who are more visual learners. I’ve read the writings of some of the great firearms instructors over the years such as; Cooper, Ayoob, Farnham, and many others. Reid’s new book definitely deserves a spot on the shelf next to them. The information, instruction, history lessons, quotes, practice recommendations, tactics, and techniques are indispensable to the individual interested in modern pistolcraft. I will definitely be signing up in the near future to train with Reid at Valor Ridge. If you aren’t familiar with the author, he has a very widely followed social media presence on YouTube with tons of great content. His consummate professionalism, passion, vast knowledge of his craft, and friendly down to earth attitude will be obvious to you after watching even one of his videos. I finished this book all in one sitting. What an absolute fun, down to earth, straight forward read. This book knocked it out of the park with the information that was in it. The book was filled with great insight into being a responsible, well refined, proficient armed citizen. It hits all major parts of being a well rounded, ethical concealed carrier. From the mind set of protecting yourself and others to proper pistol manipulation and technique; this book has it! I think anyone at any level of training or gun experience could benefit from this book. Reid wrote a great one here and I hope it isn't his last.

An excellent overview of the history of Norway. Quite readable. Should one want to delve more deeply into individual topics, e.g. the Vikings, the two Olavs, relations between Norway and its Nordic neighbors, as well as Norwegian resistance during World War II, this work presents a good basis from which to proceed. The reader is also provided with an extensive bibliography and adequate index; however, a work of this scope requires more than one map (and that with little detail).
John A. Yilek's HISTORY OF NORWAY fills a need for an accurate, readable, and up-to-date history of Norway in English. This book is the first of its kind in over 70 years. I had been looking for a good history of Norway in english for years. Yilek's HISTORY OF NORWAY (Wasteland Press, 270 pages, $15.95) was the answer to my prayers. The author, for many years a teacher of Norwegian history at Mindekirken (the Norwegian Language and Culture Program associated with the Norwegian Lutheran church of the same name in Minneapolis), had done extensive research and developed his own lectures, which eventually he used to write this user-friendly text, in eight chapters, beginning with Norway's pre-history through the Migration Age, followed by chapters on the Vikings of Norway; the Unification of Norway, Civil Wars, and the Age of Greatness; Norway's Decline; Norway in 1814; From Nationalism to Independence; World War II in Norway; and To the Present Day. Notable is Yilek's treatment of the Sami, Norway's (and Sweden's and Finland's) indigenous non-Indo-European people, for the earliest times through the present. His scholarly bibliography includes some 161 books (in English and in Norwegian), mostly of late 20th-century and early 21st-century through 2013 works. That the book is not intended to be a work of original academic scholarship is obvious from its lack of footnotes. I highly recommend John A. Yilek's HISTORY OF NORWAY for general readers and for students who need a quick but accurate overview of Norway's history over more than two millennia.
The history of Norway is a very good history of Norway -- extremely informative. I highly recommend this book for anyone of Norwegian heritage or who just wants to know more about one of the most beautiful Scandinavian countries.
This book does a nice job of giving a level of detail so that you can pretty easily ready through Norway's history without getting too bogged down. It's certainly not a complete history, but not every book has to be. The problem is that it's really not very well written. Facts might as well be in bullet form, and it largely fails to be either entertaining or engaging.I know a lot more about Norway now, but I had to want it.
a Very thrilling and realistic story, finaly at first into English about Norway, told on a clear way. An interesting history less known, for instance what happened during WW II when King Haakon VII and Crown prince Olaf had to fled for the Nazi occupiers who tried to killed them by Luftwaffe attacks, after they simply had refused any peaceful collaboration with the Nazi's, but right in time they were saved by the British Royal Navy, and the fact that Norway in contrary with the Low Countries, had never abandoned during the occupation, Amazingly, They remained into offensive against pro's and other Nazi figures, including the Heavy Water mission at Vemork! preventing a possible German atomic bomb!, till the country had been freed itself, simply after Nazi Germany had abandoned on May 9th 1945 in Berlin to the Allies, and the remained Nazi soldiers in Norway were unarmed by the British and Norwegian military.So, Norway and their King and legal government shows us they did'nt intimidate themselves.A right book for the historical buffs, who like to know more of what Norway really have done.A SINCERE HINT! Special for readers in the Netherlands, who also had been suffered under the Nazi occupation, I advise reading this book. To my real opinion, many people in the Netherlands had seemed to be given a too weak picture of defense against such a form of outstanding provokings. (e.g. excisting NSB Dutch National Socialist party), and paramilitary molesters and other wouldbe pro Nazi's, who often betrayed their own country fellowmen, e.g. people with a Jewish background, mostly for getting paychecks.
I am researching Norwegian History in regard to my family’s history. I have read several books. This book appears to be a rehash of other books. Pretty lazy. Very little originality. You would hope for more given the bio of the writer.
Easy read to become well informed about Norwegian history. Covers from the beginning to the present. Highly recommend for anyone before e visiting Norway.
A good overview of Norwegian political history. It is well written and organized. I enjoyed reading it. Good if you are traveling to Norway.
