About the Author
Pete McBride has traveled on assignment to more than 75 countries for the National Geographic Society, Smithsonian, Outside, Esquire, Microsoft, and The Nature Conservancy. Recently McBride has focused his cameras on his backyard river, the Colorado. Four years and 1,500 river miles later, McBride produced a book, filmed three award-winning short documentaries, and hosted a PBS TV program. Kevin Fedarko lives in northern New Mexico and works as a part-time river guide in Grand Canyon National Park. He is the author of the New York Times best seller The Emerald Mile. This is one gorgeous, heavy, incredible coffee table book with large photos and stories from McBride and Fedarko's Grand Canyon Thru-Hike. I was fortunate to accompany them on the first leg of this trek, until they were bruised and battered to the point of retreat. There just are not enough words or photos that can portray to even the tenth degree just how difficult and impossible this trek is. I am thankful they came back and completed the arduous trek and have educated the world of the canyon's beauties and secrets; but more importantly, how they have exposed the never-ending threats that are buffeting the canyon from so many different avenues. We need to be diligent as a society to over-protect a place like Grand Canyon, so that it will be pristine for our descendants in 100 and 1000+ years. McBride has done an incredible job capturing the "Grand" vistas, river corridor, side canyons and microcosmic parts of the entire Canyon!
I’m just going to say WOW! If you’ve ever stood on the rim of the Grand Canyon and wondered what was hidden deep in the fabric of the place, this book is for you. That gigantic gaping hole has complexity, delicate textures, and subtilty that defies the God’s eye view from the rim. Pete McBride’s photos convey a stunningly intimate connection to a National Park so large that it can be seen from space, so deep that it bisects the entire State of Arizona with an impassible mile deep moat, and yet so fragile that it’s being destroyed by developers surrounding the place to cash in on the Worldwide brand that is the Grand Canyon. Most impressive, McBride walked the entire end-to-end length of the Grand Canyon over a 13 month period to bring these pictures home.I particularly love how the photos change seasons telling a pictorial story of erosion and time. Of course, there are photos of the Colorado River flowing through the Grand Canyon in amazing light, but I found the intimate shots of slot canyons with pools and springs to be most fascinating. The landscape in the deep backcountry is riveting, but the idea of walking through that rugged terrain is almost unimaginable. Photos of the paths they followed showed an insanely difficult journey. While the tourist area is in the middle of the National Park, the eastern and western reaches, far beyond the view of tourists on the rim, are completely different and uniquely beautiful.There are few large wild areas left in the United States. McBride’s pictures helped me understand what we are losing. We shouldn’t let development mar one of the Seven Wonders of the World. We don’t have another Grand Canyon as a replacement. McBride cut his teeth shooting for National Geographic. It shows.
There is a very small number of people who have hiked from one end of the Grand Canyon to the other. Pete McBride and Kevin Fedarko started out with a few other people to do it in one trip and ended up breaking it into 5 segments. While the Grand Canyon river trip is 277 mile long (measuring down the center of the Colorado River) doing it on foot is well over 700 miles as you work your way around the side canyons, looking for water and ways up and down through the layers that make up this incredible place. Pete's written story of this trip is riveting and his photographs in most cases, just take your breath away. In some cases they are standing on the edges of cliffs, looking miles into the distance and standing someplace where it is possible that no one else has ever stood before and if anyone wants to recreate the photo it would take them 5 or 6 days of hard hiking to get back to that point. These splendid images are not your usual pretty calendar photos. There is so much to see in each photo that you can come back to this book time and time again and you will see something new each time you look at it. I bought one for myself and 2 to give as gifts and I will be giving more as gifts to my friends who love this place as much as I do. One of the purposes of this book was to show just how special this place is and how worthy of protection from outside development forces this is. I knew it was going to be a really great book but it has exceeded all my expectations in that regard. To everyone who worked on this book, who helped with the expedition, Thank you.
I grew up with coffee table books that introduced me, with image and word, to many of the American West’s iconic landscapes. Not until now, however, did that collection include what is probably the most iconic place of them all. This book fills that void with an ambition that is nearly equal to its breathtaking imagery.That ambition? Walking the entire canyon. Not rafting. Walking. Look inside the book and you’ll quickly understand just how daunting a project that is. I know I’ll never do it. Thanks to this photographer, though, I can get a flavor of the hidden treasures I and most mortals will never see firsthand. Bravo to McBride for serving as the terrestrial equivalent of a space telescope and taking us there.
I rafted the Colorado after reading Kevin Fedarko’s “The Emeral Mile†so when I heard that he was embarking on this trip with McBride, I kept up with their progress. I love the book. Sadly, no photographer can capture the GC. You have to go there yourself. The immensity of its nature has to be discovered personally. I have to admit, I love the nighttime moon shot with lantern light in the Graneries. It was surreal and it reminded me that a tribe lived there thousands of years ago and their mark on this land is still tangible. I too remember cacti clinging to my legs, the neophyte traveler in this land that I was. Thank you so much for this book, your treck through this marvelous land and your perseverance to show it to all. Well done.
As an amateur photographer who has trekked extensively in the Grand Canyon region, I appreciate just how much hard work the author has put into getting some spectacular images. This is a beautiful tome that will be eye candy every time you open it. Buy it and enjoy and enjoy and enjoy!

Much of this book reads better than science fiction. As an example: real people who want limbs of their healthy bodies amputated, and when they do, they feel much better afterwards.The brain is doing a lot of amazing stuff that turns bizarre when something in the brain goes amiss.I highly recommend it to a general audience. It's fascinating, accessible and informative. Professionals in neuroscience may want something more organized and rigorous. The style is journalistic not textbook format.I have to reread this book. There's many ideas here to be digested.Perhaps if there is any difficulty: (1) The sheer number of areas of the brain that are mentioned in the book. It's not neccessary to map them out, but that could be helpful. (2) Keeping in mind when something discussed is a theory vs. when it is an established fact about the brain.Though I don't fault the author - he's trying to keep his feet within the realm of science - the one major criticism that I have of this book - is that the book only deals with the 'self as object' i.e. aspects of yourself that are readily observable e.g. 'I am happy'. The author admits quite early that the more elusive self as the 'subject' of experience is only alluded to here. The self as the subject of experience is discussed much more in philosophy, where there is a much higher tolerance for speculation.
In this book, Anil Anathaswamy sets out to argue that the self is not an illusion. But it also isn't a "thing" either. The self is the feeling we get when a variety of brain parts do their job correctly or well. His study examines the self and the feeling of it by looking at cases where some of those brain parts don't work as they should.We start off with Cotard's syndrome, or, patients who are very much alive but believe themselves to be dead. (Imagine how strange it must be to have someone talk about how they think they are dead as if this weren't a contradiction.) This is a syndrome where the part of our brains that identify our actions and our bodies as OURS somehow isn't sending that signal.Then there is Body Identity Integrity Disorder, where a person's body doesn't match with what they believe is really their body - maybe one of their legs feels like it shouldn't be there. These are the folks who quite deliberately seek out amputation, not because they WANT to look different, but because a part of their body feels like it is not really a part of their body. (This happens when the part of our brain responsible for mapping a mental image of our body doesn't align with how our body actually is.)As a former special educator, I am quite educated on autism and schizophrenia, but Ananthaswamy talks of them in a bit of a different way - for instance, how some theorize that schizophrenia is basically what happens when the part of our brain that identifies mental thoughts or voices as ours (rehearsing my thoughts in my head) doesn't identify certain voices in my brain as coming from my brain. So they feel foreign. And mabe i feel like my thoughts are controlling me.Anyway, that is a taste of how this book goes. In the style of Oliver Sachs, Ananthaswamy does a great job teling the stories of diverse others in a way that makes them quite relatable. But what was most fascinating about this book to me was watching folks create narratives to try and make sense of what their brains are telling them. If my brain is telling me that my body is not my body, then how do I make sense of that? Oh, well, I must be dead. I am hearing voices that seem to be in my brain, but I'm not intuiting that they are coming from me. Oh, there must be someone or something who has taken over part of my brain. Etc.So, the author argues that the self is not an illusion, or at least not the kind of illusion that we can step out of to see if it is an illusion (making it unlike every other illusion we know of). But the story that emerges here is that the self is not really a thing, or one function of our brains. It is many functions of our brains coming together to give us this feeling. Whether that counts to someone like Daniel Dennett as an illusion is another discussion. But the self is a feeling that we cannot step away from, even when the brain parts giving rise to it don't always work right.
This book describes research done on people with injuries, diseases, or abnormalities of the brain that has helped to pinpoint brain regions involved in the concept of the self. These ailments (or, in some cases, simply differences from the “neurotypicalâ€) include Alzheimer’s disease, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, and delusions such as the belief that some part of one’s body, usually an arm or leg, is a foreign thing that should be removed. Embry and Holden, not her boyfriend, hook up at an abandoned hotel, accidentally setting it ablaze. They were not alone. Someone videoed their encounter and sends Embry threatening messages. Escalating threats make finding the blackmailer essential, before somebody ends up dead.I haven’t read a thriller recently that left me holding my breath, clenching my fists and shake in a very long time. Most thrillers are more mystery than thrilling. Paula Stokes did such a great job escalating tension from the first blackmail letter to the reveal of the culprit. HIDDEN PIECES never dipped in intensity. The mystery aspect of the story had many plausible suspects, one who was the actual perp.Embry is sympathetic and complex. She cheats on her overseas boyfriend, afraid to break up with him, lies to friends and her mom and makes some stupid, but understandable decisions. Most of all, she doesn’t want to let people down or lose relationships. I adored Holden, who was also no stranger to terrible choices.Family, class, commitment and friendship are at the heart of HIDDEN PIECES. I would have read the book in one sitting, but reluctantly had to go out for a bit. HIDDEN PIECES is a slow burn that will keep you guessing until the very end. My heart is still thumping.
I really liked this. I wasn't a huge fan of the main character but I loved the setting and the story. An event (or events, depending on how you look at it) sets off a chain of blackmail texts to our main character. She is tasked with certain things, most of them containing a certain level of danger involved with threats to people she loves.We spend much of the novel trying to figure out who the blackmailer is and what their reasons are. This is where thrillers often let me down because one of two things happen: the reveal of the perp is way too predicable OR the author takes a last ditch effort and just throws something random in that does not connect to the story. NEITHER of these are the case with Hidden Pieces and I am so glad. There were a few suspicious characters with various possible motives, so it wasn't entirely predicable. And the author pulled a conclusion from her story. I've had good luck with Paula Stokes and can't wait to see her next offering!
This was such a good YA thriller and mystery. I don’t find too many well written and thought out thrillers in YA and this one was both of those things. The characters were relatable and well fleshed out. They felt like teens which sometimes when I read YA the characters don’t come across as actual teens even if that’s what the author is intending, but Paula made me believe I was reading about teens with what they did and said. It all felt very authentic to the teenage experience. I loved the setting and descriptions of the area because it really connected me to the story and made me visualize it as I was reading. I did suspect who did the blackmailing but through the course of the book I began to doubt myself and even though who I thought did it did do it, how it was revealed and the why were surprises for me. I loved the book and highly recommend it!
Embry is not a good person. After deciding to put her relationship with her boyfriend Luke on hold, she decided to hook up with Holden. But there’s a problem: Holden was dating Embry’s best friend Julia at the time. While Holden did break up with her, Embry still hasn’t admitted to Julia that she was the person that Holden hooked up with–nor has she stopped.After Embry’s and Holden’s misadventure results in setting the Sea Cliff Inn on fire by accident, she suddenly finds herself thrust into small town fame after she ran back into the hotel to save a homeless man. No one knows that she’s responsible for the fire.Until the letter comes demanding that she either admit to everything that happened on Facebook or the person will ruin the life of someone that she cares about.Embry chooses the second option. And what ensues is a dangerous game of lies and putting those she loves into danger to keep the secret hidden.This was an excellent YA thriller. I’ve heard some other people complain that it was obvious to them who was behind the letter and messages, but honestly, I had no idea until the very end. And even if so, I still think there’s fun within the journey anyway.Additionally, I thought that this had a very realistic portrayal of poverty. For example, Embry’s family (just her mom) could only afford to live in that town because the mortgage had been significantly paid off when they inherited the house. They struggle to pay bills. There’s a tension that comes from knowing that her friend Julia can simply buy what she wants while Embry cannot. At one point, Embry does not want to go the hospital when she should because it would be just another bill that her family would be in debt for. There’s not a lot of YA books that feature characters like this, and I think this may be the actual first one that I remember that specifically mentions that a character gets free breakfast and lunch at school.Definitely a worthwhile read.

This is one of the best anthologies I've read. Pretty much all the stories were solid and compelling, and generally had some humor- because, hey, rogues! I don't know that I can pick out a favorite story or 2, because they all were compelling good reads.OK, except for Martin's. His read like- and probably was- "historical" notes for his GoT novels. No characterization, no fleshing out, just a dry record of "this happened and then that happened". As someone who is not a GoT expert, it wasn't even clear how it fit into the history of the novels, plus the names were confusing and there was no family tree or glossary to consult. I would honestly not even call this a story.But the rest of the book was great!
Rogues, the short story anthology edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois, contains over twenty stories of above average quality and wonderful use of the titular quality that connects all the stories. The twenty-one stories from several genres features significant characters as rogues no matter gender, species, and orientation from authors both well-known to general audiences and some note so.Of the twenty-one stories featured in Rogues the three best not only were high quality writing and features very roguish characters, but also were able to introduce a reader into the already established universe they take place in that only enhanced the story. The opening story “Tough Times All Over†takes place within the First Law world that Joe Abercrombie established himself writing about, “The Inn of the Seven Blessings†by Matthew Hughes takes place with in the world of Archonate, and “A Cargo of Ivories†by Garth Nix takes place within the world of Sir Hereward and Mister Fitz. While these were the best, the stories by Joe R. Lansdale, Michael Stanwick, and Patrick Rothfuss set within an establish world they had create were also very good.The stories especially created for this anthology is a mixture of the very good, the bad, and those that were just missing something. Daniel Abraham’s “The Meaning of Loveâ€, David W. Ball’s “Provenanceâ€, and Scott Lynch’s “A Year and A Day in Old Theradane†were wonderfully written stories in two separate genres that were in the top seven stories of the whole collection. “Now Showing†by Connie Willis is unfortunately one of the worst stories of the collection which was a shame considering that she wrote about several interesting ideas, but the execution with the characters crushed the story. Yet some of the stories while good and having roguish characters just felt like they were missing something: “Heavy Metal†was missing a fuller backstory to the main character and a better understanding of the supernatural powers at work yet once done could become a fascinating future series for Cherie Priest, and “The Curious Affair of the Dead Wives†was fantastic homage to Sherlock Holmes and John Watson by Lisa Tuttle that just felt it could have been more.Yet some of the biggest disappointments in this collection were from established authors and their established series. The worst story of the collection is “A Better Way to Die†by Paul Cornell that takes place in his alternate history timeline that features the spy Johnathan Hamilton but the reader has no idea about the world if you had never read an earlier story that featured Hamilton. And my personal disappointment was “The Rogue Prince†that George R.R. Martin wrote as an Archmaester of the Citadel as a biography of Daemon Targaryen but was more of a history of the events leading up to The Dance of the Dragons that he told in “The Princess and the Queenâ€.The twenty-one stories that make up Rogues feature--more than not--very good short stories from across genres whether in established worlds or one-offs. I bought the book for the Scott Lynch (Lies of Loch Lamora) story, which was wonderful, but the other stories introduced me to a whole slew of characters whose authors write of scams, misdirection, and "not everything seems as it appears". Most stories slant towards the science fiction/fantasy side, but not all: there are rogues everywhere. I ended up buying the first book of perhaps a dozen series based on the creativity in the short stories. Turned out to be an expensive purchase (for the irony impaired: not for the book itself but for the followup purchases) that has added to my "to be read" pile immensely. Which is I guess why authors put their stories in collections like this. A great introduction to a wide range of creative authors and interesting characters.
This is a great book. Loved all the stories. Even the ones I would never have even considered reading by themselves turned out to be very enjoyable..That said: I have to address the elephant in the room. WTH is up with Martin!?!??! Am I the only one that is just baffled about how boring his story is? (And this ain't the first time; his contribution to The Book of Swords was even worse)I don't even claim to be a writer, but I did give it a try once and took an at home creative writer course -back in the days of word processors- and I remember one of the first critiques I got from my writing coach was; a story is not just the narrating of a series of events, it's got to have a point to it. That's all The Rogue Prince is, -at least as far as I've gotten with the story, admittedly I haven't finished. I have been skipping pages though hoping to get to something that feels like a story instead of a pro-log.This is not how I remember A Song of Fire and Ice reading like. Then again, it's been sooo long since the last book, maybe I've forgotten. Surly though, if ASoFaI read like this I would have never got through A Game of Thrones.Please tell me if I'm wrong about this.Despite my rant; the book is a solid 5 stars and then some, despite Martin.

I guess I’m a little confused. There are supposed to be 85 essays in the Federalist but this book only has 18. I don’t see a description of the book that warns of this. Am I missing something? The introduction talks about all 85 essays as if they are all in this publication. Nothing in the product discription warns that this publication only contains an abreviated list of the essays.
It should be noted this does not include ALL of the Federalist Papers. It is a selected few, which I didn't notice when I bought it. I wanted them all sor study purposes, so I got another paperback with all 86 papers for 1/2 the price at a bookstore.
In the description it says, "This book features edited highlights of the essays". This isn't the case for the hard copy edition. It doesn't even have half of the papers in this edition. Returned

Most books with the Federalist Papers that I could find only had a selection of them included. This book contains all 85 and also lists who wrote them and when they were published (if that information is available). It also has a fairly decent Table of Contents so you can easily find the paper you're looking for. The constitution is also included at the beginning which some people might find handy. Overall exactly what I was looking for. Would buy again.

All such books contain the accurate text of the papers themselves, but this book contains so much more, and eliminates the need for the many additional books it would take to complete one's understanding of this priceless reference to the Supreme Law of the American Nation, our Constitution.The Introduction by Charles Kessler is 25 pages and a terrific read in itself. In this introduction he puts the Federalist into the context of the history then and its significance now. He also helps to explain the overall scheme of the papers, as well as important, general themes, and points to significant numbers and passages in support of the overall scheme and important general themes. Add 22 pages of Précis, a short summary of each of the 85 papers, which gives every reader a good idea of the contents of every paper, and a better basis for understanding the contents and overall frame of Publius' arguments.Also in this amazing reference book are copies of the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration, and the Constitution. Furthermore, the copy of the Constitution is collated with the Federalist Papers; the corresponding page number of the passage in the Federalist is shown in the margin, next to the related passage in the Constitution. Each number starts off with drills to help the student understand the concept of multiplication with each number (1-9). These drills do not have detailed explanations but have simple instructions and is intuitive to follow. Following the drills are test review multiplications sheets. First one starting with an orderly multiplication of the numbers, then the next page is random problems all within the same digit. After, they test multiple numbers together to be tested on (ie: 6,7 & 8). I would recommend this book for parents who believe in repetition to learn multiplication (*what most people grew up on and Kumons method). If you want a book that goes deeply into conceptual parts of multiplication, look elsewhere.
Great book for multiplication drills. However, if your child is just learning multiplication. It might be best to combine this book with Kumon's other book: "My Book of SIMPLE Multiplication". Together, these books give the child the foundation and the repetition they need to become masters.
My 2nd grade boy just loves it. It is a great introductory book for them. However, it doesn't really introduce the concept too much. It is more about practice their memorization.
Did this as part of my 2 to 3 graders summer school curriculum. Was excellent. We did a page or two a day and it really have him a boost into 3rd grade.
Love Kumon products. Have been using them for over 3 years now for our children. The repetition has helped them memorize and retain times tables and get so much quicker at addition, subtraction and many other topics.
Good for practice once you make kids learn multiplication tables. Instead of searching and printing math sheets to practice multiplication, it's easy to buy this and make them practice. Unless that, I don't see any other use.
We bought these to work on over summer and my kids actually like them. They do a couple pages a day. I would highly recommend them!
