There once lived a man named Rakai Pikatan. He was the man who puts an end to the mighty Sailendra dynasty in Java, and in the year 856 he ordered his men to build a temple that match Sailendra's masterpiece, the Borobudur. The temple has since been known as the Prambanan.Few centuries later in 1357, Majapahit's king Hayam Wuruk appeared to attempt to forge an alliance with the Pajajaran kingdom in West Java, by promising to marry princess Pitaloka, the daughter of the Pajajaran king. But when the Pajajaran wedding party arrived in Majapahit's capital, prime minister Gajah Mada informed them that the princess would merely becomes a concubine and that they should surrender to their East Java overlord. Surrounded by hostile Majapahit forces, the Pajajaran men bravely refused and put up a fight, but they were all eventually slaughtered, including the princess.Meanwhile, in 1811 the archipelago almost had its independence from the colonial Dutch. Following Napoleon's attack on the Netherlands, the British decided to consficate and disband Napoleon Dutch's colonial grab in the East Indies. The British originally gave the order to British governor-general in Calcutta, Lord Minto, to "overwhelm the Dutch forces, destroy their fortifications, dish out their guns and ammunition to the locals, and hand the island over to the Javanese." But what prevent the independence was one act of disobedience by Lord Minto. He dismantled the Dutch forces within a few weeks, but then installed Raffles as his lieutenant-governor in the archipelago with free rein to rule the colony as he pleased. And the rest, as they say, is history.History is messy, brutal, and oftentimes blurry. For many centuries to come the temples of Prambanan were buried and the locals only know the folktale version of its history - where a man built a thousand temples overnight as a condition to marry princess Roro Jonggrang - and they do not even know who Rakai Pikatan is.Students of history in Indonesia would also likely to learn Majapahit as the peaceful empire that unite the whole archipelago. While in reality, they obtain the majority of their territories by force and in some instances even only claim them without ever setting foot on the land. About Budi Utomo that began as an organisation to lobby for more education for Indonesia's elite class in a Dutch-controlled government, and not an anti-colonial revolutionary organisation as they usually perceived. It is about how the Japanese was sympathetic with Indonesian independence movement and was actually administering towards an independence for Java in September 1945 (with the rest of Indonesia follow suit shortly), before Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed a month before that and Indonesian revolutionaries had to take matters into their own hands for independence.But most of all, it is a book that explains every sequences that lead to many different realities in Indonesia today. For instance, contrary to popular believe, the Dutch were actually respectful to the local royal kingdoms during their occupation, they even forged useful alliances with some of them that mutually benefit everyone. And it was exactly these alliances that caused these kingdoms' eventual demise, with the simple fact that since almost all of them were allies with the Dutch they resisted the national independence cause that was centered in Jakarta, that is, apart from Yogyakarta. Which is why after the independence only Yogyakarta's sultanate survived and go down in Indonesian history as one of the heroes.All in all, it is a well-crafted and very well-researched book, written in a careful ways so that the facts, the speculations and the myths are clearly distinguished. It is the most complete historical account on Indonesia that I have read so far, and it is the number one book I would recommend to anyone who wants to know about Indonesia.
You could take someone who had no interest in Indonesia, force them to read the first 5 pages, and they'd be hooked on this fascinating archipelago thanks to Hannigan's lively narrative. He weaves it all together, somehow. I was sad to arrive at the end of the book, as I could have kept on reading for another few hundred pages.
This is an excellent book. I enjoyed it very much. Hannigan told me everything I wanted to know about Indonesia in a straight forward and entertaining way. The remarkable thing to me about Indonesia, and really South Asia is how nice people can be on the surface and how mean they can be to each other under some circumstances. From 1965 until the present "democratic" era millions of Indonesians killed each other. Vietnam, Cambodia, to some extent Laos experienced similar violence. Thailand, where I live, hasn't had the same scale of violence, but the "Land of Smiles" can be pretty tough on its own people too. Asia is wonderful but go to bed early.
An excellent book covering the time from the first inhabitants to present day. One criticism I have is the lack of detail covering the fight for independence from the Dutch. If you travel round Indonesia many roads and public buildings are named after freedom fighters but these are not mentioned in the book However I concede that a brief history cannot include much detail of every period.
While professional scholars will likely have few kind words for this adumbrated history, most readers will be drawn along by clever turns of phrase & the journalistic pace that makes this volume eminently readable, indeed a veritable page turner ...
I'm heading to Indonesia on a media trip to cruise the islands, and wanted a solid background on this complex place. I have been fascinated with the extraordinary history, written in good clear prose. It's a complex place needing a guide who can explain the politics, the history, the people in a way that a foreigner can begin to appreciate the tapestry that is this huge archipelago.
Beautifully written. A truly comprehensive history of Indonesia would have to appear in 6 volumes so that I'm happy to be introduced to this country by this book and gain some access to its past in such an engaging way. Bravo!
I found this book useful in understanding some of the cultural diversity of Indonesia. It answered many of the questions that arose while visiting the country. I would recommend it to anyone visiting from a Western country. The narrative is engaging. Delicate social and historical matters are treated, at least from my European-grown perspective, objectively. The book is brief enough to be read during the long travel time required to reach Indonesia from the West, and brief enough to leave the reader wanting to know more about this country.

Wonderful exhibition at a splendid museum in a great,rebuild neighborhood between Broadway and Westhighway at 129th street, NYC.The book represents the PhD thesis of the author and curator. Robert Sungenis (born 1955), is the founder of the Bellarmine Theological Forum and Catholic Apologetics International. He has written very important works of Roman Catholic apologetics such as Not by Faith Alone: A Biblical Study of the Catholic Doctrine of Justification,Not by Scripture Alone: A Catholic Critique of the Protestant Doctrine of Sola Scriptura, and How Can I Get to Heaven?: The Bible's Teaching on Salvation-Made Easy to Understand. He has also been criticized for making anti-Jewish remarks, as well as for advocating Geocentrism (i.e., that the Sun revolves around the Earth, and not vice versa; see his book Galileo Was Wrong: The Church Was Right).He wrote in his Preface to this 2000 book, "this book has been written for three reasons: Firstly, it is written for the Catholic so that he can learn to appreciate... the meaning of the Mass... Secondly, it has been written to answer the writings of various modern Catholic theologians who, having reinterpreted the Council of Trent, claim that the substantial presence of Christ does not exist in the Eucharist... Thirdly, this book has been written for non-Catholics, since many, not having understood the Catholic Mass, have maligned it and called it everything from blasphemous to superstitious... The primary way this book will help to accomplish such a task is to look first at the God behidn the sacrifice. Once we know God, we will know the Mass, as well as its foundation, the Cross of Christ." (Pg. xvi-xvii)He says, "we will show that the Catholic Mass is biblically and historically defensible and required of New Testament Christians. Irrespective of our defense, however, Protestant theology is left with the larger task of explaining why men who were justified by grace through faith in the Old Testament offered blood sacrifices to God. From a Protestant understanding of atonement, the sacrifices ... would be superfluous, for each of them were already justified by grace through faith and thus their blood sacrifices would be as needless as Protestants claim the Catholic Mass to be." (Pg. 63-64)He notes, "some have proposed that the phrase 'fruit of the vine' ... shows that Jesus understood the cup at the Last Supper to hold mere wine, not His blood... The basic problem with such a conclusion is that it both ignores more plausible explanations of the Matthean and Marcan texts and overlooks the more detailed Lucan account... Both Matthew 26:26 and Mark 14:22 record: 'While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying, 'Take and eat, this is my body.' We must assume that since wine was present prior to the consecration, then Jesus and the apostles were drinking it as part of their normal meal along with the bread." (Pg. 146-147)He observes, "some may object that Jesus' sudden use of 'flesh' in [Jn 6:51] would not necessarily refer to EATING his flesh, since Jesus subsequently says 'which I will give for the life of the world.' ... the problem with this interpretation, however, is that none of these instances, indeed no passage of the New Testament, ever tells anyone to 'eat the flesh' or 'drink the blood' or Christ symbolicallyl to attain eternal life." (Pg. 175-176)Not nearly as "pathbreaking" as Sungenis's two previous "Not By" books, this book will still be of great interest to anyone studying Catholic apologetics and doctrine.
Sungenis does an amazing job showing from Scripture and the Church Fathers that the Eucharist really is a sacrifice for sins and that it literally is Christ's Body and Blood. Get this book and you'll never go to Mass with the same attitude ever again.
Sterile? I don't think so. Scholarly? You bet. Exhaustive? That's putting it lightly.For those reading this who have not read Robert Sungenis, he is meticulous and tedious to a fault. If you want to explore the exhaustive depths of an issue he has covered, you will want it. If you want an hour read by which you can glean snippets to stump others, don't bother. Why? I'll tell you.He goes for it. When you think Sungenis has totally and utterly exausted and annilated the particular idea or verse or word study, he brings more. I think he's brillant. I'm also kinda geeky and weird. I do fix computers for a living so I have an excuse to be so. I don't know if there are a handful like me who will admit all that to an unknown, online audience.Fact of the matter is, if you want to exhaust the subject Sungenis sets his mind upon, you gotta get it. Then later you can go back to it as often as you like and learn something new you missed the first million times. If you do not want to do too indepth a study, skip and go on to someone else. But Sungenis MISSES NOTHING!

Sungenis is not for everybody. In fact, most of the people I know are not necessarily watering at the mouth for apologetics text books, and the few that are would prefer Scott Hahn or Pat Madrid to Sungenis. Why? Hahn and Madrid speak more down-to-earth, presupposing no knowledge on the part of the reader. Sungenis writes more for the scholar, presupposing some knowledge of the Greek language (i.e., he spells Greek words using the Greek alphabet, without providing English transliterations, as Hahn or Madrid might do).If you're still with me, if you're still interested, if you still want to roll up your sleeves and deepen your faith, then hear me telling you to get this book. In fact, get the whole trilogy (Not by Bread Alone, Not by Scripture Alone, and Not By Faith Alone). This book goes through the Old Testament, then the New Testament, then to history itself. Sungenis examines Eucharistic passages with a microscope, highlighting cross references, original language, interpretations offered by the opposition, and refutations of the opposition for each passage. He ends by looking to the Early Church to see how they interpreted the doctrine of the Eucharist.If you're a Catholic, you need this book to strengthen your own faith, make you appreciate the mass more, and give you some good defense for your beliefs. If you're not Catholic, then you should at least consider what Sungenis offers (if you're open-minded that is - if you're just out to refute anything a Catholic has to say, there are several other books you can attack that are much cheaper than this one), and see if what he says is true.It's a technical, scholarly work, but if you're serious about worshiping God with your heart AND your mind, then you need to get this book and start getting dirty.

This is a horrible calendar. I bought it for myself, not as a gift. I thought the pictures would be of real golf courses. The pictures are of scenic areas with golfers, etc POORLY photoshopped in. Looks like crap. This is getting returned, and I would recommend no one buys this except as a spoof/dummy gift.
This calendar is just what it looks like. The pictures are very large and attractive. I believe it comes out in a new edition every year, and it is a perfect gift for the golfer in your life.
These seem to be photo-shopped pictures of people on fake golf courses, and they are well photo-shopped either.

I had to return this item because I got it for the wrong class. The packaging was really good and the book was brand new! Whoever needs this book I would recommend buying it from here.
I had to buy this because of a keyboarding class that I had to take. This was a much easier (more affordable) way for me to purchase my text books than to go through the school.
this book was ok it helped me learn how to type and memorize the keys as you can see there are no errors in this review ...lol....
I typed in the ISBN for the book I needed and the description and the image was for the book and editon that I wanted so I purchased it and even on 2 day ship it was such a good deal. I guess the deals that are to good to be true are.. I recieved the book and it was the word 2002 edition not the 2007 edition shown in the image.. buyers beware..
This book is great!!! It is in amazing condition and has barely been used. Was a great buy!!!! Even came with something a little extra that I didn't even realize came with it. It was a keyboarding CD. I love amazon =D
