Robert Sungenis (born 1955), is the founder of the Bellarmine Theological Forum and Catholic Apologetics International. He has written very important works of Roman Catholic apologetics such as Not by Faith Alone: A Biblical Study of the Catholic Doctrine of Justification,Not by Scripture Alone: A Catholic Critique of the Protestant Doctrine of Sola Scriptura, and How Can I Get to Heaven?: The Bible's Teaching on Salvation-Made Easy to Understand. He has also been criticized for making anti-Jewish remarks, as well as for advocating Geocentrism (i.e., that the Sun revolves around the Earth, and not vice versa; see his book Galileo Was Wrong: The Church Was Right).He wrote in his Preface to this 2000 book, "this book has been written for three reasons: Firstly, it is written for the Catholic so that he can learn to appreciate... the meaning of the Mass... Secondly, it has been written to answer the writings of various modern Catholic theologians who, having reinterpreted the Council of Trent, claim that the substantial presence of Christ does not exist in the Eucharist... Thirdly, this book has been written for non-Catholics, since many, not having understood the Catholic Mass, have maligned it and called it everything from blasphemous to superstitious... The primary way this book will help to accomplish such a task is to look first at the God behidn the sacrifice. Once we know God, we will know the Mass, as well as its foundation, the Cross of Christ." (Pg. xvi-xvii)He says, "we will show that the Catholic Mass is biblically and historically defensible and required of New Testament Christians. Irrespective of our defense, however, Protestant theology is left with the larger task of explaining why men who were justified by grace through faith in the Old Testament offered blood sacrifices to God. From a Protestant understanding of atonement, the sacrifices ... would be superfluous, for each of them were already justified by grace through faith and thus their blood sacrifices would be as needless as Protestants claim the Catholic Mass to be." (Pg. 63-64)He notes, "some have proposed that the phrase 'fruit of the vine' ... shows that Jesus understood the cup at the Last Supper to hold mere wine, not His blood... The basic problem with such a conclusion is that it both ignores more plausible explanations of the Matthean and Marcan texts and overlooks the more detailed Lucan account... Both Matthew 26:26 and Mark 14:22 record: 'While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying, 'Take and eat, this is my body.' We must assume that since wine was present prior to the consecration, then Jesus and the apostles were drinking it as part of their normal meal along with the bread." (Pg. 146-147)He observes, "some may object that Jesus' sudden use of 'flesh' in [Jn 6:51] would not necessarily refer to EATING his flesh, since Jesus subsequently says 'which I will give for the life of the world.' ... the problem with this interpretation, however, is that none of these instances, indeed no passage of the New Testament, ever tells anyone to 'eat the flesh' or 'drink the blood' or Christ symbolicallyl to attain eternal life." (Pg. 175-176)Not nearly as "pathbreaking" as Sungenis's two previous "Not By" books, this book will still be of great interest to anyone studying Catholic apologetics and doctrine.
Sungenis does an amazing job showing from Scripture and the Church Fathers that the Eucharist really is a sacrifice for sins and that it literally is Christ's Body and Blood. Get this book and you'll never go to Mass with the same attitude ever again.
Sterile? I don't think so. Scholarly? You bet. Exhaustive? That's putting it lightly.For those reading this who have not read Robert Sungenis, he is meticulous and tedious to a fault. If you want to explore the exhaustive depths of an issue he has covered, you will want it. If you want an hour read by which you can glean snippets to stump others, don't bother. Why? I'll tell you.He goes for it. When you think Sungenis has totally and utterly exausted and annilated the particular idea or verse or word study, he brings more. I think he's brillant. I'm also kinda geeky and weird. I do fix computers for a living so I have an excuse to be so. I don't know if there are a handful like me who will admit all that to an unknown, online audience.Fact of the matter is, if you want to exhaust the subject Sungenis sets his mind upon, you gotta get it. Then later you can go back to it as often as you like and learn something new you missed the first million times. If you do not want to do too indepth a study, skip and go on to someone else. But Sungenis MISSES NOTHING!

Sungenis is not for everybody. In fact, most of the people I know are not necessarily watering at the mouth for apologetics text books, and the few that are would prefer Scott Hahn or Pat Madrid to Sungenis. Why? Hahn and Madrid speak more down-to-earth, presupposing no knowledge on the part of the reader. Sungenis writes more for the scholar, presupposing some knowledge of the Greek language (i.e., he spells Greek words using the Greek alphabet, without providing English transliterations, as Hahn or Madrid might do).If you're still with me, if you're still interested, if you still want to roll up your sleeves and deepen your faith, then hear me telling you to get this book. In fact, get the whole trilogy (Not by Bread Alone, Not by Scripture Alone, and Not By Faith Alone). This book goes through the Old Testament, then the New Testament, then to history itself. Sungenis examines Eucharistic passages with a microscope, highlighting cross references, original language, interpretations offered by the opposition, and refutations of the opposition for each passage. He ends by looking to the Early Church to see how they interpreted the doctrine of the Eucharist.If you're a Catholic, you need this book to strengthen your own faith, make you appreciate the mass more, and give you some good defense for your beliefs. If you're not Catholic, then you should at least consider what Sungenis offers (if you're open-minded that is - if you're just out to refute anything a Catholic has to say, there are several other books you can attack that are much cheaper than this one), and see if what he says is true.It's a technical, scholarly work, but if you're serious about worshiping God with your heart AND your mind, then you need to get this book and start getting dirty.

This is a horrible calendar. I bought it for myself, not as a gift. I thought the pictures would be of real golf courses. The pictures are of scenic areas with golfers, etc POORLY photoshopped in. Looks like crap. This is getting returned, and I would recommend no one buys this except as a spoof/dummy gift.
This calendar is just what it looks like. The pictures are very large and attractive. I believe it comes out in a new edition every year, and it is a perfect gift for the golfer in your life.
These seem to be photo-shopped pictures of people on fake golf courses, and they are well photo-shopped either.

This book is excellent, but, beware, it is a slog for those of us who aren't totally in love with math. And those people don't need a book like this on account of they know it all already.But the concepts are laid out clearly and concisely and the progression of the concepts is logical. I like the book a lot, it helps my understanding of the game and, because I am so slow with it, it will be there for me for a long time to come. :)
This book strikes a near perfect balance between satisfying intellectual curiosity and practical play of the cards. If theory isn't your bag, don't despair! Valuable knowledge can be absorbed from the many hands used to illustrate the authors' points. It will repay careful study by improving your game, though it isn't always an easy read. A superb effort deserving the highest commendation, I have no hesitation in awarding five stars.
Kelsey has the knack of explaining things in a manner that is easy to apply at the table. You will still have to work at it, of course, noticing the cards that have gone by and deducing the cards the opponents hold. But if you can put in that work, Kelsey shows you how to find out which play is the "percentage play" and how that changes depending on the opponents' bidding.
Invaluable
This book is very interesting and practical. It has more detail than I can comprehend, but it's easy to see the principles behind their theories and draw the conclusions that I can use in playing bridge. Good buy.

Ron Chernow is the prize-winning author of six books and the recipient of the 2015 National Humanities Medal. One of the best biographies of Washington in a compact one-volume book. Chernow is a fine author, with an extensive vocabulary and an informed background on his subject, including what previous biographers have said. He does have an irritating habit of using "one" as a subject, such as "One wonders what Washington would have thought had he known." The "one," of course, is Chernow himself, but he wants to avoid the self-conscious "I wonder." Instead, he could have said something like, "It is interesting to speculate what Washington would have thought," or something similar. Otherwise, I found it a fascinating read, very authoritative even though the occasional slip back and forward in the timeline caused me to check dates to make sure I understood. He might be discussing something in 1789, for instance, and then mention something that happened in 1787 and then go back to 1789. This is handled pretty well, and is unavoidable in some cases, and if you check, you can see that he is conscientious about it, but it does require the reader to pay attention, not a bad thing, but something many forget to take some responsibility for.
This book is long with a small script, you have to concentrate and once you focus, the story sucks you in like water down a drain. Washington's mother was selfish, he forged his way in life in spite of her. He was a land surveyor as a teenager and amassed 1200 acres by the time he was 18. He surveyed the area in Virginia where the natural bridge is, and his initials are carved in the stone. Ron Chernow did an outstanding job researching this fine book and has a nice writing style. George Washington's friends and foes alike felt there was divine intervention as to how he stayed alive in battle. This man had a spine and showed remarkable courage under literal enemy fire. He was a visionary understanding his place in history and lived by both rectitude and probity. He turned down the title of king when debate occurred as what to call the ruler of the country. Fascinating vignette was his view of slavery which he disliked. He felt it was a losing proposition one third of the slaves being too old or two young to work, one third spending their time trying to do as little work as possible and only one third actually worked. He tested his slaves kindly and even provided for his favorite slave, Billy, in his will. A wonderful book that makes nearly every other president look like hollow shells in comparison.
It feels inappropriate to give a work of such magnitude and research 2 stars. “Washington†is chalked full of accolades and five star reviews. Chernow is academic to the highest degree. His knowledge is expansive and his writing is paired with an incredible vocabulary which is exceedingly fluid and enjoyable to read.The primary problem I had with this work was that Chernow more often assumes the role of a psychologist then that of a historian. While it is expected that some "analysis of the psyche" be done by a biographer, Chernow puts too great an effort to get inside the head of Washington. Page after page is spent trying to discern Washington’s ambitions, his love life, his temper, his feelings, his emotions—the real Washington. Ironically this seems to only further obscure this figure to me.Too often Chernow assumes what should be left to the reader to conclude. Sentences begin with statements as: “Surely this is due to Washington’s inner…â€or “Washington’s insecurities were no doubt influenced by…†This is not history; it is the narrator’s voice getting to loud. I would rather Chernow had simplified his biography by stating the facts as they happened. Upon painting the picture, he could have presented--with far less dogmatism--various opinions (including his own) as to the inner mysteries of Washington.Chernow did his homework on this book and much of his recounting is enlightening. He is a talented author and a great historian, and I learned a lot throughout this biography. It is a shame he spent so much of it speculating who Washington REALLY was, instead of simply stating who Washington was—and leaving the finer mysteries for the reader to decide.
