One of the best biographies of Washington in a compact one-volume book. Chernow is a fine author, with an extensive vocabulary and an informed background on his subject, including what previous biographers have said. He does have an irritating habit of using "one" as a subject, such as "One wonders what Washington would have thought had he known." The "one," of course, is Chernow himself, but he wants to avoid the self-conscious "I wonder." Instead, he could have said something like, "It is interesting to speculate what Washington would have thought," or something similar. Otherwise, I found it a fascinating read, very authoritative even though the occasional slip back and forward in the timeline caused me to check dates to make sure I understood. He might be discussing something in 1789, for instance, and then mention something that happened in 1787 and then go back to 1789. This is handled pretty well, and is unavoidable in some cases, and if you check, you can see that he is conscientious about it, but it does require the reader to pay attention, not a bad thing, but something many forget to take some responsibility for.
This book is long with a small script, you have to concentrate and once you focus, the story sucks you in like water down a drain. Washington's mother was selfish, he forged his way in life in spite of her. He was a land surveyor as a teenager and amassed 1200 acres by the time he was 18. He surveyed the area in Virginia where the natural bridge is, and his initials are carved in the stone. Ron Chernow did an outstanding job researching this fine book and has a nice writing style. George Washington's friends and foes alike felt there was divine intervention as to how he stayed alive in battle. This man had a spine and showed remarkable courage under literal enemy fire. He was a visionary understanding his place in history and lived by both rectitude and probity. He turned down the title of king when debate occurred as what to call the ruler of the country. Fascinating vignette was his view of slavery which he disliked. He felt it was a losing proposition one third of the slaves being too old or two young to work, one third spending their time trying to do as little work as possible and only one third actually worked. He tested his slaves kindly and even provided for his favorite slave, Billy, in his will. A wonderful book that makes nearly every other president look like hollow shells in comparison.
It feels inappropriate to give a work of such magnitude and research 2 stars. “Washington†is chalked full of accolades and five star reviews. Chernow is academic to the highest degree. His knowledge is expansive and his writing is paired with an incredible vocabulary which is exceedingly fluid and enjoyable to read.The primary problem I had with this work was that Chernow more often assumes the role of a psychologist then that of a historian. While it is expected that some "analysis of the psyche" be done by a biographer, Chernow puts too great an effort to get inside the head of Washington. Page after page is spent trying to discern Washington’s ambitions, his love life, his temper, his feelings, his emotions—the real Washington. Ironically this seems to only further obscure this figure to me.Too often Chernow assumes what should be left to the reader to conclude. Sentences begin with statements as: “Surely this is due to Washington’s inner…â€or “Washington’s insecurities were no doubt influenced by…†This is not history; it is the narrator’s voice getting to loud. I would rather Chernow had simplified his biography by stating the facts as they happened. Upon painting the picture, he could have presented--with far less dogmatism--various opinions (including his own) as to the inner mysteries of Washington.Chernow did his homework on this book and much of his recounting is enlightening. He is a talented author and a great historian, and I learned a lot throughout this biography. It is a shame he spent so much of it speculating who Washington REALLY was, instead of simply stating who Washington was—and leaving the finer mysteries for the reader to decide.

I used the 6th Edition and just received my RN license in the mail recently. I passed on my first attempt. My friend did not pass on her first attempt, so I recommended she try this guide. There are updates in this version. I would recommend the 7th edition because the exam has been updated since the 6th edition.I only studied for 1 month before the exam. I read at least ~75pgs a day (finished the book in ~15 days). I reread it again at a pace of ~100pgs a day (finished in ~10 days). I answered at least 75-100 questions a day on the online-exam component. I only achieved a 50-60% correct rating on the online exams. I found the 1000s of practice questions on the online component and the "pyramid points" essential to my success. The guide also came with an audio guides (in the 6th edition there was pharmacology, acid-base, electrolyte/fluids balances). Everyday, I would listen to the audio guides in the shower and while driving.I would recommended studying longer than 1 month. I only had enough time because I was unemployed and spent hours a day studying. I felt rushed, and depressed if I didn't read/answer my daily amount of chapters or questions. I thought I was gonna fail to be honest.
Bought this 1 1/2 months before the NCLEX . Read 2-3 chapters a day - did all review questions and consistently scored 70-80 % . After I finished the book - I spent a week with the NCLEX mastery app. You will wonder how you'll remember it all - no matter what , you'll walk into your NCLEX feeling like you didn't do enough . The test ended up being very easy for me and I thank this book for it . I passed in 1 hour with 75 questions . You can do it too !
Has all of the same questions as edition 6 but the material is condensed and they have different and improved charts and graphs. I have the 6th and now 7th and like the 7th better.

Important to know - this book is ONLY questions and answers. There is no section for a brief review of material. Maybe this seems obvious by the book description, but its something I didn't realize until after the book came. It does give pretty detailed answers and explanations to the questions, but if you're looking for a book that has review chapters with some questions at the end, this isn't the book to go with.I passed my ARDMS SPI exam with a 682, but I hardly used this book. I relied on the Edelman SPI textbook, with the free 2 weeks of X-Zone access that comes with it. I found that to be most helpful. I honestly wouldn't recommend this book, but I know some of my classmates have had good luck using this as a study tool, so I guess everyone is different.
Wow! This book really helped me pass the SPI. Not only did I pass but I received a high score. I swear half of the test came from Davies. I HIGHLY recommend this book along with Edelman if you don't understand something.
Between this and Edelman, I passed my physics after being out of school for 25 years.
This books questions are way beyond what you will see on ARDMS SPI exam. If you get this book you can actually get discouraged, I had no problem passing the SPI exam. I can appreciate what the authors tried to do but some of this books questions are just completely beyond the scope of what you need to know.
I recently graduated from an accredited ultrasound program and I bought this book as a review. I also reviewed my physics textbook and powerpoint notes and tests from my physics classes (2 semesters worth) to prepare for the SPI. I passed the SPI on the first try but there's no way I would have passed ONLY with this review book. Let me say though that every person's test is different. The questions come from a bank so I think some tests are much harder than others. Others in my class told me questions that were on their tests and they all seemed pretty straightfoward. My test was VERY difficult, and had MANY questions that I had never seen before (ex. what is poise a measure of? the answer was viscosity). I would say this reviewbook covers about 50% of what was on my exam. The other 25% that was not in the book was covered in my school coursework and the other 25% I completely guessed. The only area from the SPI score report that said "may require further study" was Doppler instrumentation and hemodynamics. I got "excellent" in patient care, safety, and communication and "satisfactory" in the other 4 areas. I studied for 7 days about 6 hours a day and I made flashcards based on my textbook, class powerpoints, old tests, and this reviewbook. I completed the test with 30 minutes to spare. This book does cover a lot of topics that are on the SPI and will prepare you for the TYPES of questions that are on the SPI but the actual questions are different. Good Luck!!
I purchased this book to brush up on my physics before I took the ARRt breast ultrasound registry review exam. I found it helpful but it contained way more information than I needed to pass the exam since it was for all types of ultrasound. I just reviewed the questions I felt pertained to the exam. The way this book and the breast ultrasound review book made by the same company were both very easy to use and the explanations to the answers were very helpful!
This book is 100x harder then the spi and will discourage you don’t buy it. Only questions with hardly any informative feedback on why they chose that answer.
Let’s just hope that I can pass the SPI and RVT registries now that I’ve studied the book

I don't read much erotic romance or romance in general. Until now, I've only read the work of one author, and picked up this book because that author highly recommended it. I liked it quite a bit, though I found some of the genre tropes (incredible, unmatched, never-to-be-equaled sex; stubborn stupidity repeatedly delaying the HEA) a bit obtrusive. (On the other hand, given the premise, for Stella to experience unmatched sex was certainly credible.)Stella is a wonderful, fascinating character. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her and rooting for her. Michael almost matches her in interest. Their personalities and challenges are generally believable. I can't say their lapses back into self-destructive self-image are less convincing, but I was somehow not entirely convinced.One genre convention I love is the HEA, which means I don't have to be worried about whether the cluelessness of either or both will prevent them getting the happiness they deserve.
Not sure why it had good ratings. Like Shades of Grey it seems to try to be readable soft porn. Why not develop another perspective of the life of an grown autistic spectrum woman?
i really enjoyed this! Stella and Michael were so good together. I really liked both of them, with their complexities and vulnerabilities.This is the second ownvoices book i've read this year with a heroine who's autistic. I felt that the author did a good job of building on the awkwardness of Stella and Michael's relationship as it went from professional arrangement to more.I enjoyed the scenes wit Michael and his family. When he hung out with his cousin Quan and the times at his home with his mom and sisters. Of course, the first meeting between Stella and his family made me want to cover my eyes cuz it was just an entire mess! I really felt for Stella there. But the other times Stella meets his family was pretty great, after that 1st disastrous meeting. I really liked seeing Michael cooking and interacting with his family and we get to learn bits of his Vietnamese culture.I really wanted to hug and shake Michael at times. Especially with his dad's infamous legacy shadowing him his entire life and he feels like he could never be good enough for stella. And on the flip side Stella feeling like Michael broke it off cuz he pitied her for being autistic. I wanted to scream at both "you are so wroooong!!" get it together lolBut Michael did also annoy me at a few times. Especially when Stella's coworker kissed her and she's pretty upset and yup Michael's concerned BUT at the same time he came across as being a bit angry at Stella when bro cut her some slack she didnt want to kiss that dude. Simmer down.Stellaaaaaa i really loved her. especially when she initially thinks she needs to change, be less different but soon realizes nah this is who she is and it doesn't make her less to be autistic.And the ending was perfect for me. I loved how it was all wrapped up! I'm excited for the Bride Test, Khai's book (Quan's bro). We meet Khai very briefly in here and i can't wait for book 2!
This book was reviewed as a favorite by literary critics on The Today Show last month. It is a quick read, but no substance at all, and all sex. Not what I was expecting. For me, a waste of a Sunday afternoon!!

Charley Harper is an artist with a very unique style he calls "minimal realism". He's able to capture the essence of his subjects with minimal visual elements.The painting of birds caught my attention with the clean smooth lines which resembles vector work. His colour choices are from observation in life and the resulting image is always bold and striking. Many of his pieces are on nature.The author Todd Oldham only discovered Charley Harper's work in 2001. Since then, he has been collecting all the work he has ever published. The result is this impressive 424-page book that collects work that span the entire career of Charley Harper. It includes the commissions he done for Ford Motors, schools, advertising agencies, etc.There are two editions for this art book. The first is a 5.5kg book published in 2007, the year Charley Harper passed away. The newer edition, which I have, is the shrunken down version which is lighter, more handy and affordable. The construction of the book is great and all the illustrations are brilliantly reproduced.The contents are as follows: * Conversation with Charley Harper * Betty Crocker's Dinner For Two Cook Book * The Giant Golden Book of Biology * The Animal Kingdom * Ford Times Magazine * Birds & Words * Advertising & Promotions * Mosaic Murals * Paintings * PostersThere's a nice long interview written by Todd Oldham which is also translated in French, German, Italian and Spanish.Charley Harper has published a few books before so there might be some duplication here. As is Charley Harper - This book is AWESOME. My only beef, and I probably should have looked closer when I ordered it, is that it's very small. I actually saw this book in real life at the library and it was a huge, very cool coffee table book (probably 18"x14") or so, and about an inch thick. VERY cool for his stuff! This is not "small", necessarily (it's like 10x8 or something), but has far less impact than the huge one did. Still cool, but I'd recommend the huge one, if you can handle it! ;)
I am a fan and collector of Charley Harper's, and, that being said, this book is truly a beautiful and wonderful representation of his work. Also, I want to say as an owner of the large $200 dollar edition of this book, I have to admit that I like this one better. The big one is really tough to physically handle due to its size and weight. Plus the pages in the big book are matte and really don't do Charley's work justice. This smaller version has glossy pages which allows all the images to really pop off the page. Please note that this version of the book has every single image and page that is in the larger version -- EVERY PAGE. So, buy this for yourself and buy one for a gift...everyone will love this book.
I recently discovered Charley Harper through some recently acquired vintage posters. I bought this book on prospect and was excited to pour through the contents. The book does contain lots of his work in full color. However I felt that overall the book was a bit disorganized, messy and not really as educational as I would have hoped.I found the size of the book to actually work against the contents. Images were hard to see, poorly reproduced and in many cases seem to be a jumble of random of images without much thought given t o the presentation. Had the works been grouped a bit better I might have enjoyed it more.
Todd Oldham has done a great job of paying tribute to an overlooked legend in the business. Many grew up with his illustrations as a child, and there is something simple/childlike about his illustration and complex at the same time.This is a huge hardback book with no dust cover. The boards are thicker than normal, probably due to the dimensions of the book. The book is 425 pages and the artwork is lavishly reproduced with no printing issues that I notice. Charley Harper is a great illustrator to enjoy and learn from. This lower cost edition of the book (the full size edition sells for about $120 on Amazon, discounted from $200) will have to do for the likes of me. But, though small and rather cheaply made, it is a treasure. So, five stars for Harper and Todd Oldham, one star for the publisher. The binding is so cheap that through brand new, it arrived broken. I don't blame Amazon's shipping department for this. Still, those complaints aside, I am happy to have a wide sampling of Mr. Harper's best work.
There is nothing wrong with this book; it is really quite nice But, realize you are buying the MINI edition, NOT the 12 lb full format coffee table book. The product description does not make this clear. This item has a retail price of $29.95, but the listing price for this item, when I bought it, was about TWICE retail. Caveat emptor.
