As a cook who's curious about regional/ethnic cooking, I LOVED this cookbook! The recipes are classic, with all of my French favorites: coq au vin, socca, cassoulet, soupe au pistou, gratin dauphinois, you name it. Yes, some of the ingredients are going to be tricky to find outside of France--the cheeses in particular--but reading about Saint-Marcellin brings back fond memories of the all-too-brief time I spent in France two years ago. (Although I was confused that the recipe for tentation de saint Antoine was translated as "broiled pig's inner parts" when it calls for the snout, feet, ears, and tail. Wouldn't those be the outer parts?) This isn't a cookbook for vegetarian-inclined cooks--true to the historical countryside roots of French cuisine, this cookbook features dishes laden with offal meats that Americans usually eschew. But the photography is lush, and everything from appetizers to desserts is covered under the rubric of "country cooking," so this robust compilation includes lots of seafood and veggie-heavy dishes as well.Each recipe is preceded by a headnote (generally written by the deputy in the French Parliament who contributed her or his region's emblematic recipe to complete the collection) and identified by its region of origin. Every French department is represented, even the overseas departments in the Caribbean (Guadaloupe, Martinique), South America (Guyane), Africa (Réunion, Mayotte), the South Pacific (Wallis-et-Futuna, Polynésie, Nouvelle-Calédonie), and North America (Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon). For a geographile like me, those overseas departments were my favorite part of the book--I hadn't heard of most of them, frankly, and it was fascinating to see what ingredients represented key flavors in those exotic dishes. My only unfulfilled wish when it came to this book was that I would have liked to have more information about each general region--it would be interesting to get an overall picture of the highlights of grouped regions rather than meandering snippets from microregions. But that said, you'll find many gems of French culinary lore sprinkled throughout these hearty, authentic recipes. Are they of the "ready in 20 minutes" variety? No. Are the instructions spelled out in great detail for beginner cooks? Again, no. But if you're a cultural cook who loves to dig deep into a country's food traditions, this is the book for you. Vive la cuisine française!
A large collection of recipes from the regions of France - many using unusual ingredients. Not the usual simplified French cooking offered many other places. And if you don't have rabbit handy, substitute chicken. I will not get tired of using this cookbook in my exploration of regional French cooking. Includes many provincial recipes that don't require a high degree of skill and are easily adaptable by American cooks just looking to add some sophistication to their family and party menus. Many interesting recipes for baked goods as well without the fussiness of traditional French pastries.
I'm used to French cooking, especially bistro and provincial, and found a few of these recipes interesting. But you will have to find a source for eels, for instance, or take your own time to look up cheese substitutions/equivalents if you plan to make many of the recipes. Still, it's a gorgeous book, with really striking illustrations. (Come to think of it, this is really a deluxe version of the spiral-bound books you find in every bookstore in America, with recipes from the class parents or the members of the bridge club, except that in this book the recipes come from members of the French Assembly.)
Very interesting cookbook as it is broken down by various areas of France. Good recipes. Now that I have Kindle Cloud on my desk top, I can buy all these cookbooks, look at the recipes and pictures on a 'big screen' and print out the ones I want to try. Very happy with my purchase.
This is such a great cookbook and one which I almost did not get! I have hundreds of cookbooks and many, many French cookbooks and so I have to be very judicious about which ones I add to my collection. (Shelves are overrun, stacks on the floor and no more room!) But this one is a definite keeper. I made Mamelie's bread pudding recipe from the Cher and it was very simple, different from the American and English bread pudding recipes I have used, yet delicious. The photographs are beautiful and the recipes seem very authentic and not too fussy. I hope I can find Vin Jaune to make the chicken recipe.
I usually don't buy cookbooks as can get a lot good recipes online. I found this book in a bookstore and love the fact that it covers all different regions of French country cooking. The photos are very helpful for how it ought to look at the finishing. Amazon's price for this cookbook is so much better than to get it from the store. Thank you Amazon!

I am 78 years old and have been a Christian for 47 years but have known very few people interested in fasting, although it is scriptural. I try to fast 2 days each week. There is so much praying that needs to be done. It is unlikely that I will ever be a missionary but I pray for everyone in the world because I don't want anyone to go unprayed for, not on my watch. God bless you for making this book available for us who pray.
This is the most loaned book on my bookshelf, so much so that I have purchased several used copies so I always have a copy here. I think it is the best handbook on fasting. Sometimes when the Lord is nudging me to fast I will look through this to see what type of fast fits what I am fasting for. As the title indicates, each type of fast is based on particular fasts in the Bible. We recently did the Ezra fast for resolving a problem with incredible results. Sometimes fasting is just about intimacy with the Lord, but sometimes it is for breakthrough in a certain issue, like health or finances. I have never said, "Oh, I am so sorry I fasted." But the Lord has always "rewarded" the fast in some way.If you are reading this, I encourage you to begin with a one-day fast. I fast the Jewish day, which is from sun-down to sun-down, which is a true 24 hour period. This is easier to start off with as you are not experiencing a full day without eating. If you decide to juice which is popular with modern fasting and I don't agree with at all, please do not use fruit juice as it will cause you to feel worse in the long run because of the spikes in your glucose level. It is very healthy to give the digestive system a rest so the body can focus on repairs it needs to make instead of on digesting food, as long as you do not have any serious health issues. People with health issues can fast from something else, like no electronics for a day.
Book Review: I found Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough by Elmer L. Towns to be an informative read. If you are reading it alone, it can be a little challenging. Not in a bad way, but it requires you to do a little more bible studying to understand all the different types of fasts listed in the book. It has scriptures and life applications that I love. I would absolutely suggest reading this book with a group. Be prepared to spend some quality time with it. This is not what I would call a quick, fast, or easy read. You have to read this book and put some work into it. Each chapter ends with a page guide to help with each fast, so that helps. Over all this book is a must have for anyone starting a fast. This books helps you to know why you are fasting, what type of fast you may want to do, and results you should expect from each fast. Even if you have been doing it for years, I promise you will learn something new.Tip: For this particular book I would suggest purchasing the hard copy vs. the kindle edition that I purchased. You will need to highlight a lot.
I've read lots of books on fasting and I have to say this is the best of the bunch. Sixty percent of the book describes the 9 different fasts and the way to do them spiritually; I've fasted many many times but never have I read something that added so much to the experience spiritually as this book. The author also includes aprox 20% from a doctor on the purely physical aspects and another 20% of quotes and experiences of other people. I wish I had had this book 40 years ago when I started fasting. One of the most significant statements he made (summarized) is that although God doesn't require fasting, when you do one of these fasts(he includes contracts that you sign for your own benefit) when you don't complete the fast according to your own contract that you write out, there will be a price to pay. This is true! I learned from experience when I did a long fast in anger toward God and when I've fasted and broken the commitment part by eating things that weren't a part of the deal. I felt a loss and a sense of failure and of course the answers I'd hoped for didn't come; until I read this book I didn't understand that. Highly recommend this to anyone who wants to fast in the way God has decreed and wants something beyond merely physical or scripture verse descriptions.
This book lays out Biblical Scriptures and examples for Fasting and the various types.Fasting has definitely changed my life for the better. I credit Fasting, Praying and Giving about the Tithe (Matthew 6) to my luxury car, my many vacations including one to the Bahamas and many other this happening that were impossible for me to do in my own strength. The Daniel Chapter 10 Fast (as opposed to Daniel Chapter 1) is the easiest however as I have built up my Faith and seen countless results I basically do Liquid And Vitamin Fasts now.If you are ready to go to the next level of your life than this is how you do it.
Not only has the information in this powerful book been instrumental in my own spiritual development (bondage breaking!), the companion Study Guide was most helpful when leading this study for others. EVERYONE was blessed and deeply moved by finally understanding what it meant to incorporate Biblical Fasting into their Christian life. Thank you, Mr. Towns!This book is designed to target a biblical and spiritual understanding of this Christian discipline rather than give tips on fasting; however, in Towns book, "The Beginner's Guide to Fasting", he writes more about the physical aspects of undergoing a fast. I bought this book to learn more about fasting several years ago. I have pulled it out and shared with many who have never used this powerful weapon of warfare. I love the study involved in particular fasts. The book doesn't make fasting seem at all like a legal event when using the principles presented.

Eric Carle and Tomie dePaola: Author One-on-One Eric Carle is the creator, author, and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many other children’s books. Tomie dePaola is the author and illustrator of Strega Nona: Her Story and countless other books. They recently had a conversation about their careers as picture book authors. Tomie dePaola: When I was only four years old, I announced to my family in particular and to the world in general that I was going to become an artist, and write stories and draw pictures for books. I never swayed from that early declaration. I’ve always been curious to know, what inspired you to become a creator and illustrator of picture books? Eric Carle: My career began as a graphic designer and for a number of years I worked as an art director for an advertising agency in New York. In the mid 1960's Bill Martin, Jr. saw an ad of a red lobster that I had designed and asked me to illustrate his Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Well, I was set on fire! I was so inspired by this book, and the opportunity to illustrate it changed my life. After that, I started to create my own books, both words and pictures, and really it was then that I had found my true course in life. Now, I have a question for you, Tomie. How would you describe your artistic style, and has it changed over time? Tomie dePaola: My illustration style is heavily influenced by folk art--strong simple shapes, bold lines, color, color, color and a deceptive simplicity. My style began to develop early in art school, and through the years, it hasn’t changed very much, but it has refined itself. How would you describe yours? Eric Carle: My aim with my work is to simplify and refine, be logical and harmonious. I like to use simple shapes, bright colors and a lot of white space. I write for the child inside of me. That is always where I begin. Tomie dePaola: I do, as well. The only audience I keep in mind is that four-year-old in me. People sometimes ask me what advice I would give to young artists. I always think of the wonderful advice I received from my twin cousins when they were in art school in the late '30s. They told me, “Practice, practice, practice and don’t copy.†Eric Carle: I often tell people about the four magic letters: DO IT. I want to be encouraging but I can only offer the example of my own experience, which is just one approach. There are many wonderful artists to learn about, which is important. But you must use your own imagination. You have to just do it. Tomie dePaola: How do you feel knowing that a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar is sold every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world? Eric Carle: It is hard for me, maybe for others too, to grasp this concept. But I am truly honored that my story is enjoyed by so many and that it is now being shared by a generation of parents who grew up with my book. How about your Strega Nona. She is one of your most popular characters. Can you share how she came to be? Tomie dePaola: In the ‘70s when I was teaching at a college, we were required to attend faculty meetings. I always sat in the back with a yellow legal pad. Everyone thought I was taking notes. At one meeting a doodle appeared of a little lady with a big nose and a big chin. I named her Strega Nona, and the rest is history. Speaking of history, how will you be celebrating the third annual Very Hungry Caterpillar Day this year? Eric Carle: On The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day, March 20th, I will probably be at home with my wife, Bobbie (I am a bit of a hermit, actually). But I will be saying a little toast to the caterpillar for whom I have a special place in my heart. And speaking of holidays, isn’t your favorite holiday Christmas. Do you have a special Christmas memory? Tomie dePaola: Christmas is my favorite holiday. My favorite Christmas was the one when I received tons and tons of art supplies: everything from an easel to paints, pads and pads of paper, and “how to draw†books. A very cute and colorful book that is a classic. We used this book as the center piece of a book baby shower that we gave for my niece since this was one of her favorite childhood books. The cake consisted of cupcakes that imitated the colors and shape of the caterpillar on the cover. It was a big hit with both my niece and the guests.
My five-year-old twins LOVE books (something that makes this bibliophile ecstatic!) and I'm always looking for cute new books they would like to read. I saw this one just before Valentine's Day and thought it would be a cute book to read on Valentine's Day. I also ordered one for our nine-month-old nephew and our four-year-old nephew because lots of kids have read and enjoyed The Very Hungry Caterpillar!Love from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a book written by Eric Carle, who wrote The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a book many parents will recognize. This book welcomes back that same caterpillar to tell children about love. This hardcover book is the size of a gift book, measuring 5 3/4 inches by 7 inches and has glossy paperback pages.I was excited to receive this book for my kids but we were honestly disappointed with it. Based on the recommended age range for this book (3-5 years), this book should be good for them but it seems to be written for a much younger audience. Each set of pages only has a few words, along with the same types of pictures as in the original Very Hungry Caterpillar book and it only took us about a minute to read through it. The message behind the book is definitely cute but I think kids older than three would be more likely to become bored with it. We've only read it once and my kids haven't asked to read it again.I think this is a cute book but it is marketed at an older audience than it should be. If the publisher were to print this as a board book instead, I think this would be a great book for babies and toddlers because of the more durable pages. Had we known more about the actual content, I wouldn't have purchased it for ourselves but we will keep it anyway and possibly give it to friends with younger kids.
Even though we built quite a collection of children's books during the seven years I spent babysitting our three grandsons, it's always a delight to discover another to add. This one brought back memories of carefree summer days as a child, how exciting it was to find a caterpillar outside, to feel that little tickley sensation as it would move up my arm, and being amazed when my mother told me it would one day become a butterfly! I'm so pleased with this little board book that uses the life stages of a butterfly - from egg to caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly - to teach counting, colors, days of the week, foods (not to mention a recipe for a stomach ache!) - very sturdily constructed, brightly illustrated, and at 7" x 5" and a hair less than an inch thick, it'll fit perfectly into the chubby little hands of our two year old little guy on his birthday!The different sized pages in the middle of the book (after the caterpillar pops out of his egg on Sunday morning) showing different foods with holes punched in the centers to indicate where he's nibbled through them are darling - each page is thick enough that I think I'm going to cut a caterpillar-sized piece of green pipecleaner to give him so he can watch his very own caterpillar making its way through the one red apple he eats on Monday, two green pears on Tuesday, three purple plums on Wednesday, four red strawberries on Thursday, five bright orange oranges on Friday, and then the variety of multi-colored foods (probably not a caterpillar's scientifically accurate diet, but fun!) he eats on Saturday that leads to his stomache ache - chocolate cake, ice cream cone, pickle, Swiss cheese, salami, lollipop, cherry pie, sausage, cupcake and watermelon - goodness gracious!On Sunday, he limits himself to one green leaf, builds his "small house, called a cocoon, around himself", stays in there for over two weeks before he emerges as a multi-colored butterfly, whose wingspan takes up the final two pages! Though we probably won't expect our grandson to comprehend the scientific term of metamorphosis, he'll certainly grasp that the caterpillar's transformation is magical - a pretty good description of the book itself!

Although there were 50 stories each was unique, I loved them for many reasons. One, because they were short enough that I could read one in an evening before bed. Two, because they held my attention. Each story had it's own brand of adventure, intrigue and love. Three, God was involved in each story but not cookie cutter involvement. I will keep these to read over and over again. Thanks for this superb read. And at a bargain!
I enjoy the authors stories and how each was always relating to the bible so you can have a true resource that can help now 2018. I haven't had any experience that I can relate to being something I didn't like because as the stories go you will find what at making you mad gets cleared up and have a happy ending that warranted. Loved the 50 stories because I love Mail Order Brides stories.
This was the first Pure read set and I love it. I enjoy the stories and dislike the five page description of sex so, this is the kind of reading I enjoy very much.
The 50 stories are amazingly unique and different from each other. The romances are creative and realistic. If you like faith and romances you’ll enjoy this box set.
You won't ever be embarrassed with this set if someone reads over your shoulder. The stories are clean and spiritually up lifting. Rcm
What a lovely combination of really clean Christian stories quite a variety the one nicer than the other really enjoyed them all
There were so many wonderful stories especially, the ones where she included all the books in a series. The one story about the civil war bride who's husband beat her...that story was so intense.This was a really a great box set.
I loved every book in this set! one right after another... great tender love stories. I can highly recommend this set of books!!
