Eric Carle and Tomie dePaola: Author One-on-One Eric Carle is the creator, author, and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many other children’s books. Tomie dePaola is the author and illustrator of Strega Nona: Her Story and countless other books. They recently had a conversation about their careers as picture book authors. Tomie dePaola: When I was only four years old, I announced to my family in particular and to the world in general that I was going to become an artist, and write stories and draw pictures for books. I never swayed from that early declaration. I’ve always been curious to know, what inspired you to become a creator and illustrator of picture books? Eric Carle: My career began as a graphic designer and for a number of years I worked as an art director for an advertising agency in New York. In the mid 1960's Bill Martin, Jr. saw an ad of a red lobster that I had designed and asked me to illustrate his Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Well, I was set on fire! I was so inspired by this book, and the opportunity to illustrate it changed my life. After that, I started to create my own books, both words and pictures, and really it was then that I had found my true course in life. Now, I have a question for you, Tomie. How would you describe your artistic style, and has it changed over time? Tomie dePaola: My illustration style is heavily influenced by folk art--strong simple shapes, bold lines, color, color, color and a deceptive simplicity. My style began to develop early in art school, and through the years, it hasn’t changed very much, but it has refined itself. How would you describe yours? Eric Carle: My aim with my work is to simplify and refine, be logical and harmonious. I like to use simple shapes, bright colors and a lot of white space. I write for the child inside of me. That is always where I begin. Tomie dePaola: I do, as well. The only audience I keep in mind is that four-year-old in me. People sometimes ask me what advice I would give to young artists. I always think of the wonderful advice I received from my twin cousins when they were in art school in the late '30s. They told me, “Practice, practice, practice and don’t copy.†Eric Carle: I often tell people about the four magic letters: DO IT. I want to be encouraging but I can only offer the example of my own experience, which is just one approach. There are many wonderful artists to learn about, which is important. But you must use your own imagination. You have to just do it. Tomie dePaola: How do you feel knowing that a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar is sold every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world? Eric Carle: It is hard for me, maybe for others too, to grasp this concept. But I am truly honored that my story is enjoyed by so many and that it is now being shared by a generation of parents who grew up with my book. How about your Strega Nona. She is one of your most popular characters. Can you share how she came to be? Tomie dePaola: In the ‘70s when I was teaching at a college, we were required to attend faculty meetings. I always sat in the back with a yellow legal pad. Everyone thought I was taking notes. At one meeting a doodle appeared of a little lady with a big nose and a big chin. I named her Strega Nona, and the rest is history. Speaking of history, how will you be celebrating the third annual Very Hungry Caterpillar Day this year? Eric Carle: On The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day, March 20th, I will probably be at home with my wife, Bobbie (I am a bit of a hermit, actually). But I will be saying a little toast to the caterpillar for whom I have a special place in my heart. And speaking of holidays, isn’t your favorite holiday Christmas. Do you have a special Christmas memory? Tomie dePaola: Christmas is my favorite holiday. My favorite Christmas was the one when I received tons and tons of art supplies: everything from an easel to paints, pads and pads of paper, and “how to draw†books. A very cute and colorful book that is a classic. We used this book as the center piece of a book baby shower that we gave for my niece since this was one of her favorite childhood books. The cake consisted of cupcakes that imitated the colors and shape of the caterpillar on the cover. It was a big hit with both my niece and the guests.
My five-year-old twins LOVE books (something that makes this bibliophile ecstatic!) and I'm always looking for cute new books they would like to read. I saw this one just before Valentine's Day and thought it would be a cute book to read on Valentine's Day. I also ordered one for our nine-month-old nephew and our four-year-old nephew because lots of kids have read and enjoyed The Very Hungry Caterpillar!Love from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a book written by Eric Carle, who wrote The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a book many parents will recognize. This book welcomes back that same caterpillar to tell children about love. This hardcover book is the size of a gift book, measuring 5 3/4 inches by 7 inches and has glossy paperback pages.I was excited to receive this book for my kids but we were honestly disappointed with it. Based on the recommended age range for this book (3-5 years), this book should be good for them but it seems to be written for a much younger audience. Each set of pages only has a few words, along with the same types of pictures as in the original Very Hungry Caterpillar book and it only took us about a minute to read through it. The message behind the book is definitely cute but I think kids older than three would be more likely to become bored with it. We've only read it once and my kids haven't asked to read it again.I think this is a cute book but it is marketed at an older audience than it should be. If the publisher were to print this as a board book instead, I think this would be a great book for babies and toddlers because of the more durable pages. Had we known more about the actual content, I wouldn't have purchased it for ourselves but we will keep it anyway and possibly give it to friends with younger kids.
Even though we built quite a collection of children's books during the seven years I spent babysitting our three grandsons, it's always a delight to discover another to add. This one brought back memories of carefree summer days as a child, how exciting it was to find a caterpillar outside, to feel that little tickley sensation as it would move up my arm, and being amazed when my mother told me it would one day become a butterfly! I'm so pleased with this little board book that uses the life stages of a butterfly - from egg to caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly - to teach counting, colors, days of the week, foods (not to mention a recipe for a stomach ache!) - very sturdily constructed, brightly illustrated, and at 7" x 5" and a hair less than an inch thick, it'll fit perfectly into the chubby little hands of our two year old little guy on his birthday!The different sized pages in the middle of the book (after the caterpillar pops out of his egg on Sunday morning) showing different foods with holes punched in the centers to indicate where he's nibbled through them are darling - each page is thick enough that I think I'm going to cut a caterpillar-sized piece of green pipecleaner to give him so he can watch his very own caterpillar making its way through the one red apple he eats on Monday, two green pears on Tuesday, three purple plums on Wednesday, four red strawberries on Thursday, five bright orange oranges on Friday, and then the variety of multi-colored foods (probably not a caterpillar's scientifically accurate diet, but fun!) he eats on Saturday that leads to his stomache ache - chocolate cake, ice cream cone, pickle, Swiss cheese, salami, lollipop, cherry pie, sausage, cupcake and watermelon - goodness gracious!On Sunday, he limits himself to one green leaf, builds his "small house, called a cocoon, around himself", stays in there for over two weeks before he emerges as a multi-colored butterfly, whose wingspan takes up the final two pages! Though we probably won't expect our grandson to comprehend the scientific term of metamorphosis, he'll certainly grasp that the caterpillar's transformation is magical - a pretty good description of the book itself!
As a kindergarten teacher, it's impossible not to be a fan of all things Eric Carle. From his artwork, to his beautiful, accessible text, each book is truly a treasure. The latest from the Hungry Caterpillar is no exception! This is a perfect gift for any young reader... for Valentine's Day or any other occasion that you want them to know they are loved. (that would be every day!) Also very appropriate for a child to give to a teacher or other special adult in their lives... a beautiful expression of love. Thank you, Mr. Carle, for yet another gem to add to my collection.
I love The Very Hungry Caterpillar and so does my son. I got this one for him for Valentine’s Day. The story is simple and the illustrations are lovely (I took a few pictures to give you an idea). I love this cute, little book and you will too.

Although there were 50 stories each was unique, I loved them for many reasons. One, because they were short enough that I could read one in an evening before bed. Two, because they held my attention. Each story had it's own brand of adventure, intrigue and love. Three, God was involved in each story but not cookie cutter involvement. I will keep these to read over and over again. Thanks for this superb read. And at a bargain!
I enjoy the authors stories and how each was always relating to the bible so you can have a true resource that can help now 2018. I haven't had any experience that I can relate to being something I didn't like because as the stories go you will find what at making you mad gets cleared up and have a happy ending that warranted. Loved the 50 stories because I love Mail Order Brides stories.
This was the first Pure read set and I love it. I enjoy the stories and dislike the five page description of sex so, this is the kind of reading I enjoy very much.
The 50 stories are amazingly unique and different from each other. The romances are creative and realistic. If you like faith and romances you’ll enjoy this box set.
You won't ever be embarrassed with this set if someone reads over your shoulder. The stories are clean and spiritually up lifting. Rcm

There were so many wonderful stories especially, the ones where she included all the books in a series. The one story about the civil war bride who's husband beat her...that story was so intense.This was a really a great box set.

A quote from the book reads, "Today, the only philosophically respectable way to endorse free will is to be a compatibilist—because we know that determinism, in every sense relevant to human behavior, is true." However, quantum physics says that the outcomes of physical processes cannot be predicted with certainty because they are not determined with certainty. Despite this, the author goes on and on about determinism although it is inconsistent with quantum physics.To sum up, we are not ultimately responsible for our thoughts or actions -- physics is. But the author should have studied at least a little quantum physics before writing what ought to be a physics book.
I was initially skeptical to even start this book, thinking that free will is one of those philosophical questions “destined†to never be resolved. However, after reading this short book I am convinced that free will in a sense in which I thought I had it is just not there. And this was quite an eye opener.One popular review here mentions that the book is interesting in the beginning but then not so much - personally I found every page informative and very well written.Highly recommended.
This is not really a book--it takes about 20 minutes to read. Yet, Dr. Harris, who is a very good writer, makes some interesting points. Since functional magnetic resonance imaging shows that a person's decision to move is registered in the brain several hundred milliseconds before we may be consciously aware of it and our thoughts appear to us without our conscious control, these facts suggest to him that we have no free will.Then what is meditation about? The point of meditation is to watch our thoughts arise and not do anything with them (don't believe, don't disbelieve them, don't be carried away from observing them). It is obvious that this implies there is choice. If one is able to disassociate to some degree from our thinking, therefore not "biting" into our seemingly randomly generated thoughts, we are certainly free to ignore them or, even more interesting, we can discover that the world can be seen without the structure of presupposition.It may be true that if someone has no insight into the workings of their mind, he is pushed, pulled and apparently controlled by conditioned, yet random thinking, peculiar to his/her own unique situation in time and space. But that's like saying meat can only be eaten raw, which was true until we learned to control fire. We do have ways of freeing ourselves from "acting upon" our thinking and this ability will, in fact, generate other thought processes that go beyond our present understanding of mind, either as a "free agent" or as Dr.Harris suggests, a programmed machine.
I'm a huge Sam Harris fan - his "Waking Up" podcast is consistently in my weekly listens and the episode with Eric Weinstein remains one of my favorite pieces of audio. However, this book is a huge letdown. It is either poorly written, intentionally hyperbolic or both. It's like a lazy blog post written after a night of drinking.Sam has a deep background in science and neuroscience, so it was startling and disappointing to see him write a manifesto that begins with a thesis and then back-fills it with nothing but personal anecdotes and off-hand observations to support it. He seems to think of free will as something that can only exist in a vacuum - completely devoid of context, internal or external forces, influences or stimuli. He simultaneously embraces the tenants of determinism while dismissing it. He constantly asks the reader/listener "why did you make a decision in your life?" and then removes all agency from our choices by ignoring anything in our collective experience which could inform that choice.A great example of this comes when Sam reminisces about his past involvement in martial arts and his decision to quit. He deliberately asks "why did I do this?" Instead of reasoning through his mindset at the time, the increased value of other interests, the condition of his environment, his own emotional state, etc, he lazily concludes he doesn't know.The whole book is intellectually lazy and sets this discussion of free will back years. If you're a real Sam fan, do yourself a favor and skip this.

A terrifying notion to many, because of long cultural belief that we exist as independent entities that can garner praise and blame, without which seemingly looms an abyss of anarchy, chaos, nonexistence. But the fact is that we always ARE here and now, no matter what we believe; and right/wrong and good/bad remain as qualities of behavior, the particulars varying from culture to culture. Nothing to fear besides a change of perspective, self-image, loss of false beliefs.Inseparable from the universe, conditioned from the “big bang†to conception to physical death, free will for us is but an illusory concept. Then what is it that makes choices? The entire universe! In fact ‘you’ and ‘I’ exist only as ever-changing thoughts and feelings, moving processes in space-time, present participles rather than nouns: doing, thinking, etc., each in a unique way. Our freedom consists in deserving of neither praise nor blame, since what we do is (unpredictably, to a lesser or greater extent) inevitable. We are all constant change as mortal object of consciousness, stillness as mysterious subject.

About the Author
Sally Roesch Wagner is the founding director of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation in Fayetteville, New York and currently serves as adjunct faculty in the honors program at Syracuse University. She is a member of the New York State Women's Suffrage Commission and a consultant to the National Women's History Project. Author of numerous women's history books and articles telling the "untold stories", her recent publications center on the Haudenosaunee influence on the women's rights movement. Wagner appeared in the Ken Burns PBS documentary, "Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony" for which she wrote the accompanying faculty guide for PBS, was a historian in the PBS special, "One Woman, One Vote" and has been interviewed on NPR's "All Things Considered" and "Democracy Now."Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer, editor, and feminist activist. Her books include the bestsellers My Life on the Road, Revolution from Within, Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions, Moving Beyond Words, Marilyn: Norma Jeane, and As if Women Matter. A Review of The Women’s Suffrage Movement by Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner (Foreword by Gloria Steinem) Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner was one of the first PhD’s in Women’s Studies, writing her dissertation on Matilda Joslyn Gage (for whom she is the official biographer). She was also one of the founders of the Women’s Studies Program at California State University, Sacramento and the founder of the Gage Museum in Fayetteville, NY. Sally and I have been friends and colleagues for nearly fifty years, and it is with great pleasure that I introduce you to her newest book, The Women’s Suffrage Movement (published by Penguin and available March 2019). When I told a friend that I was reading The Women’s Suffrage Movement, my friend replied, “I would think that that subject had been exhausted by now, that nothing new could be said about the Suffrage Movement.†If you, like my friend, think we know all there is to know about the 19th century women’s movement, you are so wrong. Sally offers and analyzes information about feminism in the 19th century that has never been told before. When Sally was in graduate school she discovered that a neighbor in her home town in South Dakota was the granddaughter of Matilda Joslyn Gage and had her grandmother's papers and other historical documents in her attic. These materials opened a whole new view of the 19th century women’s movement (along with many years of original source research) which Sally shares with us in her new book. Sally was once asked in a job interview how she approached her work as a historian. She replied, “I talk to dead people.†And now thanks to Sally’s careful and insightful research, she allows us to do the same, with her astute and candid guidance and translation. Sally does what many historians fail to do: she presents us with original source materials (which she gives to us so we can draw our own conclusions); she aligns the stories with analysis but leaves judgement to us as readers and offers an intersectional view of history that includes actors often written out of mainstream history. While most feminist histories focus largely (or even entirely) on white women, this book examines the influences of indigenous women and the organizing of Black women including what was done prior to Seneca Falls. The metaphor most frequently used to describe the different generations of feminism is the wave. Nineteenth century was the first wave, 20th century the second wave and now is the third or fourth wave (depending upon the current interpretation). Sally, however, explains history not as a wave, implying non-differential movement in one direction, but rather as a puzzle with each unique piece developing a complete picture. Unfortunately most of us were taught a linear, white, patriarchal, fantasized version of US history. The puzzle metaphor explains that all participants are a piece and without each version of the story (puzzle) the picture is incomplete. One extremely important point that Sally makes early in the book is that what is termed the Suffrage Movement was about much more than the vote. Much like contemporary feminists, our foremothers were fighting for economic parity, married women’s property rights, freedom from violence, sexual liberty and many other parallel issues. Also like the current movement, feminism wasn’t monolithic. Deep divisions arose particularly around the levels of radicalism participants wanted to exhibit, the strategies for ending slavery (remember most early feminists were also abolitionists) and most importantly what principles and values would govern their actions. These conflicts resulted in splintering of organizations, unlikely alliances and racist tactics. Fortunately Sally dispels the bifurcated, “two-sides to the story†view of history in favor of the many sides. When members of organizations disagreed about strategies, they would often start new organizations to continue the fight, demonstrating that sometimes conflict clarifies and allows for theoretical growth. Having been involved in movement politics for the past fifty years, I saw many parallels between the 19th and 20th century movement. The current Women’s Movement continues to deal with issues like expediency vs. principles, radicalism vs. reform, racism, heterosexism, who speaks for the movement, the function of separatism, just to name a few. For that reason alone, it is important to learn our herstory, to learn what has come before us. One of the things I love most about Sally’s writing is how accessible it is. She does not get lost in academese. Her writing is straight forward and she backs up her assertions with materials written at the time, including conflicting stories of the same events. Some years back, Sally wrote a book entitled A Time of Protest, about several social justice movements happening simultaneously in the 19th century (feminism, anti-slavery, labor, even animal rights) and I assigned it in my Women’s Studies classes. My students, many of whom groaned when told they would have to read a history book, loved Sally’s book. About the Author
Michelle Blesi is a certified medical assistant CMA (AAMA) with 14 years of industry experience. She worked in the family practice area for 10 years, emphasizing clinical and laboratory skills, before changing her focus to leadership and working as a lead in the nursing/lab department and as a clinical manager. Michelle has a diploma in medical assisting (and is certified through the AAMA), a bachelor's degree in psychology, and a master's degree in community psychology, and she completed the Teacher Education Series (TES) courses in spring 2005 at the University of Minnesota. Her coursework included introduction to vocational teaching, course development, instructional methods, philosophy, and student training and assessment. In addition to being program director, she teaches both clinical and laboratory courses, a medical assistant refresher course through CECT, and administrative procedures for medical assistants (both traditional and online). This works great on my kindle app on my MacBook. Keywords, Definitions, and Page Locations for the words are easy to find in the search box. I wish there were more options to highlight and mark-up. However, I like the feature that once something is highlighted it has the option to be used as Flash Cards!
A wee bit of water damage on the bottom, and some of the pages were dog eared, but otherwise it's perfect. there's no markings in it either as far as I can tell. Almost like new

Love this book. This book helped me prepared and passed my CMA exam. It was full of information and pictures, very helpful! I recommend it to anyone who needs to refresh their mind. Well worth the money!
