I bought this book a few months ago. My first cake was the Golden Almond cake. I have tried other recipes from other books, and never comes out the way is suppose to, but with this book, I have not made a recipe that I do not like yet. I made the Perfect Pound Cake, and I have gotten great reviews on it. Also made the all American Chocolate cake and the Devils Food cake, plus others. I have follow the recipes to the T and better yet weight my ingredients as described. For the first time I have found a book that will give what it says. Rose Levy Beranbaum has a golden book. My aunt fell in love with the book too, and I have to give her my book, because I could not get it to ship to Puerto Rico. Of course, I end up getting me another book. It is definitely the Cake Bible. I love this book, and I would be lost without it. I recommend it to anyone.
Every year I find myself working on some sort of personal project. Last year it was mastering french macaron cookies and 2015 found me wanting to get back to my roots as a 10 year old baker. Honestly, those were the BEST of times. I had a fantastic mom (she's still fantastic) that kept an open kitchen for her kids. My sister and I would just open the cookbooks and see what looked good to eat and then we would make it. We had no concept of time or difficultly, we just read the recipes and did our best. Trial and error were our teachers. I was the only 10 year old who knew what Cream of Tartar was! Only my great gram could make a better meringue than me! This is where the Cake Bible takes that 10 year old fearlessness and adds in the "why" behind the recipe. I have learned so much in the few cakes I have made from this book. I'm not so good at teaching my own girls about baking so I'm hopefuly they'll soon decide to open this book, pick a cake and make some magic happen in my open kitchen. Get the cook book and read and absorb and read and absorb!
I lost the copy I had of this in the 90s and I just HAD to get it again. The recipes in here are now a huge part of my family's holiday celebrations. I always get such great feedback. The recipes are clear, to the point, and provide helpful tips and directions. I wouldn't say this is for the inexperienced baker. If you are just getting started in baking, you may want to try a different book with simpler cakes just to begin with and then come back to this book. The recipes in here can be pretty complex and very easy to mess up on.Although the recipes in this book are great as is, a great thing about the popularity of this book is that you can go online and find many different variations and add-ons that you can make to the recipes to make them more to your liking.
Rose Levy's recipes for use of the "reverse creaming method" are great, however, some of the recipes are a bit more detailed and the ingredients are a bit harder to measure (as an example, one recipe I wanted to make has in the ingredient list...4 1/2 egg whites). I feel this cookbook is a bit more advanced for me, and I am a person who bakes quite a bit. I learned a lot from reading her books (I have the Baking Bible as well that I received as a gift). It's useful information and the cakes come out great, however, it's not your easy measuring/ingredients/instructions that you probably would see in some of the other cookbooks. Any one who wants to learn a great method of baking cakes...and is willing to be a bit more advanced in baking technique, then this cookbook would be great.
Oh gosh. The Cake Bible was everything everyone said it was. When it arrived, I think I spent the rest of the afternoon perusing its fabulous pages. From pictures to instructions, it is a true baker's gem. While I can't eat cake (low-carb), I bought the book because I love to bake for others. What makes The Cake Bible so amazing are the diet-related sections: "Recipes Using all Egg Yolks"; "Recipes Using all Egg Whites"; "Recipes with No Cholesterol and Low Saturated Fat"; "Recipes with Low Cholesterol and Saturated Fat"; and even a section for me, "Cakes for Passover (without flour!). The final section may be the most helpful for our busy lives today: "Quick-To-Mix Cakes that are Great Without Frosting or Adornment". And there's not just a punky few recipes in that section either. There are (if I counted correctly), 31 options! For my edition, I chose a clean, used copy that did not have a dust cover, as I really desired the unmarked pages. But the pristine white hardback with gold spine lettering is charming.
I'd purchased this book many years ago and ended up not using it very much. I gave my copy to a daughter who bakes quite a bit. Of course, a few months later, I realized that I would need to make some presentable cakes in the near future, so purchased The Cake Bible again. It does give a thorough grounding in the cake baking process. Personally I think it would be better if someone edited out 90% of the uses of the word "exquisite", but the advice and recipes are solid.
Not very happy with these recipes. Was planning on making the rose wedding cake. There was nothing rose about it other than the decorations. I also tried the flourless chocolate cake. I like my recipe from Best Recipes a lot better. The buttercream frosting was also very soft.
The page layouts could be clearer/better constructed, but Rose Levy Beranbaum's Bible series of cookbooks are an indispensable addition to any kitchen. These books are absolutely packed with recipes, and the techniques are described in a very granular, easily-digestible way that makes cooking them a breeze.
My cake artist in the family wanted this book for Christmas - she hasn't been baking that long, but has been decorating cakes for several years. She thought this book would be a good additional to her skills.

This book is colorful, with very general information. Nice pictures, not much text. it's geared more to younger kids...probably should say 6-8yo.I thought for the price it would be more like a small eyewitness guide and give more details and inspiration for our trip planning.Our 8 and 11 yo girls read it in about 10-20 minutes. Wish our library had it for us, instead of spending the $10.
I was looking a book about Costa Rica for my 9 year old as were traveling their for vacation. He found it interesting and was able to point out some of things he read about when we got to Costa as well as answer of the questions on the tour. There really aren't any books about Costa Rica for kids and it is a pretty popular travel spot as it has a variety of things to do and see. This book was helpful and did the trick but it could be improved.
Honestly I don’t know where any of these good reviews come from. The “book†is flimsy, full of typos and printed poorly. There are some interesting tidbits in it but for $10? It should be $2 at most. It’s a rip off. My kiddo said, “It looks like I made this book.†He’s 8.
No one edited this book before it was printed! Lot of misspellings! Beautiful pictures though.
Love reading it myself, not just with my daughter. A good preview before our vacation.

This book was a disappointment. Some of the general reference information is good (minimal - it is a thin book, thinner than most magazines). The pictures/print are horrible. Very digital, blurry, pixelated. One picture looks like it was freeze-framed from a pixelated video. Very disappointing. Wish I had not wasted my money - definitely not worth the $10. Maybe $3.

I got this book shortly after having watched the first film. The movie really drew me in and I had to have it. Now, altogether, I think I like the film much better than the book, but the novel has its merits too without a doubt.I see a lot of reviews talking about how the characters were without personality, boring, unreadable, flat. In some ways I do understand the frustration. At times it's near impossible to read what is going on exactly, BUT I think I've found purpose to what so many deem madness. I mean, these are kids who woke up in a strange place with no memory of who they are, where they came from. To top it all off, they're trapped in a maze crawling with monsters at night. And no matter how much they try to escape, they can't. They have lived in a place with no idea of what they were, who they were supposed to be, or what they ARE supposed to be now. For me, it would only make sense for a stagnant environment to produce stagnation in the people occupying it. I know that may be reaching a little bit - but it's what has helped me to manage through the book with a peaked interest.I couldn't put the novel down. Overall, I find the concept of the story good. And despite the blank slates of many characters, they are still fairly likable (except for Alby. Book Alby worked my absolute last nerve. He was a complete 360 from his movie self and I have never hated a character so much so quickly. I disliked him more than Gally >:( ). All in all, the movie made me want to dive directly into The Scorch Trials, so it definitely did something right. Honestly, I think the biggest issue that most people can agree with is the lack of personality in the characters. But in my perspective, I can kind of make it work in my head! I look forward to continuing these books.
The Maze Runner? (Rolls eyes so hard she can see her brain) Meh, it was forgettable...and aggravating! In fact, I can distinctly remember the day-to-day struggle I had with the book! Days where I would dread the fact that I had to pick up The Maze Runner and suffer reading through the endless chapters that give you no answers, no purpose to The Maze, no clear objective, annoying and pointless characters that you feel no connection to, and hopelessness.Hmm, okay, have you ever played Monkey in the Middle? Well, imagine you are the monkey in the middle, you have Thomas (the lead character) on one end, and James Dashner (the author) on the other end. Okay, now imagine James Dashner holding a mysterious black velvet drawstring which holds all the answers you are dying to get your hands on. Okay, now picture Thomas and Dashner cackling as they toss the drawstring back and forth over your head. At first, you chuckle and say something like, "Oh, come on guys," then 30 chapters later, while they continue to play their silly game, you give up on the attempt to intercept the drawstring, and crossing your arms you say something like, "Okay, this is getting really annoying."Finally, after 60 chapters, you decide to walk up to Dashner and rashly kick him right on the chin and you shout, "ENOUGH!" And in your disgraceful moment of defeat and frustration, Dashner "thoughtfully" hands over the black velvet drawstring, so as to say, "All right, I'm sorry." You gasp, and then squeal, AT LAST! YOU HAVE THE ANSWERS! You fall to your knees and madly begin to open up the black velvet drawstring, "This is it! This is it!" you exclaim to yourself, only to uncover....complete and utter darkness; yep, nothing. The bag was empty the entire time.Then, as your gaze moves steadily up at Dashner, you take notice that he is frowning, and smiling, and laughing all while staring at Thomas, who is responding in the same manner. And then it hits you, they are able to converse telepathically! What in the world!? Argh!So you get up, take a deep breath, sweep whatever Dashner dust-bunnies have settled onto your jeans and shoulders, and begin to walk away from their wicked scheme; who needs those guys anyway? Rude! But just as you are storming off, Dashner runs up to you, laughing irritatingly while trying to catch his breath and says, "Okay, okay," his arms up in surrender, "I'm done, here take this, you'll want to read this," and just like that, he walks over to Thomas (who is laughing hysterically by the way), they pat themselves on the back, as to congratulate each other, and they walk away.You shake your head in utter confusion and look down at the single sheet of paper resting on the palm of your hand, you unfold it, it's an epilogue. The best darn thing Dashner wrote in the entire book!
This is a horror book filled with nastiness, lack of empathy, and most revoltingly, the idea that it's reasonable and morally correct to torture and kill children in the name of possibly saving the human race. I forced myself to finish it to see if the ending had any redeeming qualities---it does not. A "teaser" for the second book begins with a brother and sister kidnapped after watching the murder of their parents. Apparently many adults, including respected reviewers, can maintain enough emotional distance to enjoy this sort of thing, but I am not one of them. And I certainly do not regard this as appropriate for children, or even teenagers.
Most sets only have the 1st 3 books, it's nice this set has all 4 books. However this is NOT a Boxed set . This is a set of 4 books that are shrink wrapped together with a paper wrapper around the ends & back. It is not in a box, so the books are loose when the wrap is removed.

A few months ago, I found this book while browsing through the shelves at a local bookstore. The fantastic pictures and descriptions in the book ignited my interest in furniture history. This is not a how-to book, but if you want an understanding of the details that are characteristic of particular furniture styles -- as well as some background on the historical, political and social forces that influenced these designs -- you probably won't find a better reference manual. The book covers furniture from around the world over a 3,000-year period and includes over 3,500 excellent photographs and illustrations. Regardless of your interests and tastes -- from Chippendale to Capellini or Newport to Newson -- you'll find examples and information on styles, history and biographies that will broaden your knowledge of furniture development. Furniture has twelve chapters, covering styles from the ancient furniture of Egypt, Greece and Rome to European styles of the 17th to 19th centuries. There are also chapters on Chinese, South African and American furniture, as well as a discussion on contemporary designs and directions. Each chapter opens with an historical overview of the era being examined. For each era, there is also a timeline of events that helps the reader understand factors that influenced each era's furniture designs and materials. Recommended by a fine furniture craftsman as THE book to have as an overview to recognizing furniture styles throughout history. My copy is definitely "used" but quite serviceable. This is an airplane flight over the history of furniture style, not a dissertation on furniture development. I would buy it again. Shame it is out of print.
This book is out of print and not easy to find but a wonderful reference book for furniture design. The copy I received was in decent condition, although did have noticeable wear.
A professional Interior Designer of 22 years, I also teach Interior Design at the University level. I am proud to require this as our textbook for History of Furniture. The photography, the selected pieces, the detailed information --- on-target! Students actually enjoy learning historical styles, all-the-while picking-up a little World History along the way. (Warms a teacher's heart!)The book contains elegant photos of furniture only found in world famous museums. Judith Miller has given us an up-close and personal look at seldom seen antiques, as well as more current pieces. Even the dedicated student would have had to spend years visiting select museums for just a peek. The quality of the research, the pictures, even the quality of the paper tells the reader "something special is behind this cover".All this AND, it's a gorgeous Coffee Table Book; worthy of a Christmas gift to that hard-to-buy-for person on everyone's list.
I bought this book as a gift for a friend and she was overcome because they had used this book as a textbook in college (she got a degree in Design) and she had wanted to keep it at the time but couldn't afford it, so sold hers back. I didn't know that when I bought it, but it turned out to be the perfect gift! She keeps it at her bedside and goes through it often.
I got this book because I just love furniture and love knowing the history of certain types. This book is great because it has vibrant color photos and walks you through the timeline of the history of furniture styles from BCE to contemporary.
Another Judith Miller antiques book. Gorgeous photos & easy to follow diagrams. Like all of her books, much of what she covers is museum quality & in a price range that most people won't ever buy or sell. Still, a beautiful book though not everyday useful.

I wish I could be a Swallow or an Amazon. It was great fun to read about the adventures these kids came up with and their idyllic lifestyle. This is also an interesting (if fictional) view of hands-off parenting: the mother gladly sends her children on their independent adventure to an island with just a few guidelines about touching base infrequently.This book's greatest strength and weakness is that it lacked serious conflict and did not suck me in. I was able to put the book down...and I found that pleasant for a change, since I normally gulp in one sitting. I read some, put it down for a few days, went back and read some more. I wish that today's literature had not built up a desire in me and in so many others to have serious, high conflict. I'm glad the kids were never in grave danger or trying to save the world. They had adventures, but I was never terrified for their lives and just enjoyed their good-natured battles and explorations.
If you're not familiar with the author Arthur Ransome, just Google his name to see how big his fan group is.These books (Swallows and Amazons is the first in the series) were written about 80 years ago and the stories are still wonderful. I started reading the S&A books back in the mid-1960's when I was still in grade school. My mom had read them as a young girl and she got me started. I now own all 12 of the books in the series and I re-read them every couple years. Even though I know all the plot lines, Ransome tells such great stories that I always enjoy them as much as the first time I read them about 50 years ago. They're perfect for adventure lovers of any age!! Although you don't HAVE to read the books in order in order, it's better if you do as the author develops the existing characters and introduces new ones as he goes along so you get to know them. Swallowdale is the second in the series after Swallows and Amazons.
such a lovely, evocative and nostalgic book, which has always been my favourite in the series. I'm always struck with an overwhelming urge to go camping in the dales after reading these! The characters are very relatable and likable despite this book being 87 odd years old!I would have given it a full 5 stars were it not for the fact that close to $10 is an absolute outrage for a kindle book which has been in publication since 1931.This is a classic in my opinion, and it's sad to think that price might prohibit some readers from purchasing it.
Pretty much every installment of Arthur Ransome's outstanding series is well worth reading. His laidback, first-hand, expert-storytelling writing style and his wonderful characters make these books just as enjoyable (perhaps even more enjoyable) for adults, as well as kids. I would recommend that you read them in order. If you enjoy this series, I would also recommend Enid Blyton's classics, such as her "Adventure" series or her "Mystery" series. A newer book, Summer of Coins, (first of "A Ginger and Jack Mystery series), also has a similar vibe. Highly recommend Swallows and Amazons!
While "Swallows and Amazons" was written in the 1930s that doesn't mean there isn't a lot here, especially for children who love the thought of adventure without their parents. Parents will appreciate the metaphors and poetry of the book; young readers will love the idyllic adventure on a lake island in the last warm days of summer holidays in the North of England. (This was the first long book I read as a child. One of the unintended consequences of this was that it gave me confidence to tackle other longer, more complex books.)
I was hurt and deeply angered when I read another reviewers comment about the book being unsuitable for children because it had "racism and animal abuse". Unbelievable!! First of all, the whole story is about girls and boys working together, at a time when girls didn't do things such as playing around in boats and fighting pretend pirates. And as for the "animal abuse",that is ridiculous. The book is very well written, and I soon realized when I started it that it was not the dry, dull book I had expected it to be! Every adventurous child and adult that enjoys a good laugh and some thankfully short-lived sorrows should definitely read Swallows and Amazons!!
I purchased for someone who is new to sailing. I was surprised this was such a popular book. I learned about it from a friend. It's not easy to start and old-fashioned in its style. The sailing descriptions are riveting once one gets in to the story.
Child rearing seems to have been very different at the beginning of the previous century where young children are allowed to sail to rocky island alone and spend the days camping relatively unsupervised.Although children today are generally not permitted to do this (probably be arrested for child endangerment), children can still read this book and dream about how it was or it could be.Briefly the story is about two groups of children, a group of four siblings - the Swallows, and the other, two sisters - the Amazons, who are enamored with sailing and of being outdoors and live a rich fantasy revolving around these two desires.The two groups are at first in conflict over who controls the island, but after a challenge settles the issue join forces to thwart skullduggery that casts unfair blame on the Swallows.The book might be a bit slow in the beginning for younger readers, but once the two groups meet, it takes off and is exciting in a very innocent way. These are children being children, not children trying to young adults, making it very different from much contemporary fiction aimed at tweens/young teenagers.

This is the first smoothie book I have seen that includes serving and nutrition info for EVERY recipe! I've bought a lot of generic smoothie recipe books in the past, but this one has definitely been more useful to me because I can monitor how much protein and fat I'm consuming with each glass. I'm also really happy with the recipe list -- I typically hate green smoothies, but the ones in this book made me rethink that. Definitely happy with this one!
My husband was diagnosed with cancer and started radiation on his throat. I ordered this to be able to make him smoothies while he is going through treatment. I had him highlight the ones that he thought looked good and he highlighted almost the entire book. There are a LOT of good recipes in here.
Just made my first smoothie. Bought one of those fresh fruit combo cups at my local grocery store. Strawberries, orange, and kiwi. Added ice cubes and a little water. Pretty good. This blender had the iq blend setting and it does all the work for you..blends then pauses, then starts up again, then pauses allowing things to settle at the blades then stays up again...loud! But very effective. Can't wait to try more recipes!
The recipes are good, and I like that they are separated into chapters according to the benefits of health. I also enjoyed the blurbs she included about each one. There are a number of typos and a few ingredients mentioned in the blurbs that are not in the recipe. However, I like this book much more than others if you are using the Nutri Ninja Auto IQ. I recommend this recipe book.
Recipes look ok, but the nutritional information is way off. Paid way to much money for a lot of incorrect information.
Has a lot of great recipes, but was disappointed there were no pictures to give me an idea about recipes.
This kitchen gadget queen loves it - processes really good smoothies and granitas as well as pseudo jamba juice and fruit/veggie blend drinks; does wonders for salsas, hummus, sauces, etc.
I bought this book to go along with the Ninja machine I also bought. It was helpful and has lots of recipes to try. I think if you're a new user to the Ninja or the smoothie world, this is a great book to have on hand.
