Got it for a car trip and it kept the kids occupied. They enjoyed the variety of it. Honestly I have no knowledge of this subject so I can’t speak to accuracy but I know my kids found it fun.
My son loves this book. It's full of codes to practice decoding, and this is his favorite book right now. The encoded messages have some relatively complex vocabulary, so kids under about age 12 will need some help to figure out some of the words.
I bought this book to use in my classroom. We watched the movie Imitation Game and then the students wrote codes of their own codes. They really enjoyed this lesson and truly understood how hard it is to break a coe with the limited resoures the people had at the time.
I bought this for a young teen who loves math. The purpose was to engage a teen into something other than a video game and to introduce him to a field that could be good to know. However, it was such an interesting book that I bought one for myself! I do love cryptography after all. The book is easy, with lots of quizzes and written problems, but it isn't childish. It's fun!
This is the perfect beginner's book for children interested in codes and cryptography. Great description of the various types with puzzles to solve.
My 9 year old granddaughter loves it. She enjoys the puzzle part and the "secret language."
Did not like the book. It is too advanced for me.

This is an anthology of 10 stories primarily from the World War I and WWII era involving messages that came through credible mediums from the “dead†as well as from near-death experiencers. The book was prompted by the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I last November. The prevailing message of the stories has to do with the immediate post-death state, which frequently involves confusion, even unawareness that the person has in fact transitioned from the material world. Indications are, not only from this book but from many others like it, that having foreknowledge of what happens immediately after death can help a person avoid such confusion and more alertly awaken to the reality of the afterlife environment. To that end, this book offers much.The Preface by editor Jon Beecher is a fascinating story in itself as he tells of his own “awakening†to the reality of a spirit world. Leading a very materialistic life and not believing in life after death, Beecher had a rude awakening in 2000. “I just banged my head and woke up to a whole new worldview,†he summarizes his 11-page story.Beecher begins the chapters with the story of Private Dowding, now something of a classic in the metaphysical genre. Dowding was a 37-year-old British soldier killed on the WWI battlefield. Communicating through the automatic writing mediumship of Wellesley Tudor Pole, Dowding told of his initial confusion. “If there is a shock, it is not the shock of physical death,†Dowding explained. “Shock comes later when comprehension dawns; ‘Where is my body? Surely I am not dead!’†He recalled that he saw two friends carrying his body on a stretcher and assumed that he had been injured, although he was confused by the fact that he was walking behind them and yet seeing his body on the stretcher. “I seemed in a dream. I had dreamt that someone or something had knocked me down. Now I was dreaming that I was outside my body. Soon I should wake up and find myself in the traverse waiting to go on guard.â€In another story, a Polish pilot was shot down and killed in the crash. However, as he remembered it, he got out of his crashed plane, ran to hide from the Germans, and encountered some French peasants. When he asked them for help, they did not appear to see him. At some point, he came to realize he was no longer occupying his physical body. “What you expect here, that you find,†he communicated through a medium. “You build your awakening, it is just as you imagined, at least that is what they told me. I expected nothing, so nothing came. But now I am pulling out of the difficult doldrums and am beginning to feel my strength.â€A British tank officer recalled falling face downwards in a swampy mud and then laying unconscious for a time in something of a nightmare. “It was a time of conscious paralysis,†he communicated. “I hated it, and when something snapped and I was free, I was awfully relieved.â€It is never quite clear as to how long in earth time it takes for the departed soul to recognize he or she has given up the ghost. In the case of Alfred V. (believed to be New York sportsman and socialite Alfred Vanderbilt), who was one of many victims on the Lusitania, which was torpedoed by a German submarine on May 7, 1915, it seems to have been more than a year. On November 5, 1916, he communicated with Dr. Carl Wickland, a psychiatrist, through the trance mediumship of Wickland’s wife, Anna, claiming to be hungry and cold and his clothes all wet. Dr. Wickland then helped him understand his condition.In the book’s Conclusion, Beecher notes the saying, “You are what you eat,†and suggests that after physical death “we are what we think.†A person’s “moral specific gravity†or his “goodness†during the earth life, seems to factor into the awakening process, but, from the stories in this book, indications are that a conviction that the soul lives on in a greater reality significantly expedites the awakening process.This book is recommended for any person who thinks she or he might die at some time in the future.
Several "freshly dead" soldiers wondered aloud through mediums why they never knew about the afterlife state that they found themselves in. They had to be rescued from being earthbound. With so many fatalities happening in warfare (including all the civilians) I would think that there would be interest in afterlife research since these murders are essentially government sponsored. That was a major thought I had while reading "In Times of War," a most interesting read which I recommend.This is the third book I have read on the warfare and the afterlife theme, and so far they all focus on the transition part of the story from physical to 'spiritual' life. Very little seems to be shared about why war exists, is it a karmic institution, how do enemies in battle relate to each other on the other side, or warnings against pursuing wars. They focus much more on "Hey, Mom, I'm still alive despite the fact my body is dead." One person in this volume did say that war was never justified, but he did not expound further.That said, while the book focuses on war dead, it is much more of an afterlife research book than a war book that anyone can learn from. I found it most interesting and thought-provoking.
This book was brilliantly edited and the reading of it flowed like a blended caramel mochaccino on a hot day. I devoured it in an afternoon and couldn't wait to finish it! I had to get quickly to the end so I could share it with friends who'd expressed a desire to learn more about the evidence available about the afterlife. So many questions they've posed to me answered in such engaging, simple language! Because the theme was communications from soldiers, this would be an especially good choice to share with military and former-military men and their families. I highly recommended it!

"In Times of War", we hear stories of mostly World War soldiers and how many were taken out so quickly they didn't even know they were dead. This book tells fascinating accounts of soldiers and their experiences at the moment of their deaths. Many actually stayed and helped those, still alive, to fight the battle before moving on to their next dimension. Sudden death often seems to make for confusion. In times of war, when so many lose their battle with this life, a large number may become confused about where they are and may not even realize they have died.At times we may appear ghost-like to them. Our world is hazy and dark. Then they begin to see the surroundings in both worlds. Slowly they wake up to their new life and move on with the friends and family who come to get them. Often times its other men in their battalion who died before them coming to retrieve them. There are what is called“Celestial rescue squads†if you cry out for help, help will come.It shows how our state of mind at the moment of our death can greatly influence how we find ourselves. Are we stuck between worlds because of our beliefs or state of mind? Or will someone be there to help us on our journey? This book discusses Rescue circles, where they helped those who did not understand that they were now dead to move on to the light. It reminds us all to become more educated in the afterlife so when its your turn, you don’t get “lostâ€. I really enjoyed this book.

They started with professional, expensive inkjet printers through corporate sponsorships and grants, and it took ten years since the time these artists started experimenting and exhibiting for the technology to catch up with consumer inkjet printers.This book is process oriented and is recommended for intermediate to advanced mixed-media artists and photographers who want to explore digital artmaking. They show you how to use your inkjet printer, albeit more expensive and professional models, to print on practically any material: fabrics, plastics, metals, papers, etc. The past few weeks, I've been studying the techniques and I've ordered the InkAid product so I can create my own substrates for the low-end desktop printer, the Epson C84 with Durabright inks. InkAid is a special precoat and it was developed by the Digital Atelier artists ([...] I've been able to create interesting prints with my printer that neither the artists nor InkAid support - but I'm happy to report that they've both been very responsive and helpful with my questions.You'll still need to know the basics of digital design and composition, but if you ever wanted to make your artwork explode onto textures, layers, collage and 3-D surfaces - this book is it. This is a process-oriented book so you will still have to develop your own digital imagery, compose the layers, and prepare the surfaces before you can print. You will need to have some experience with image editing techniques such as Photoshop, and how to scan, capture or upload images to your computer. This book is concerned with output - and intimate knowledge with the capabilities of your desktop and wide- or large-format printers is necessary. This is not a quick artmaking process. This book assumes you have your own expertise but it offers more possibilities for traditional and digital artists. They position the inkjet printer as a well-placed tool in the mixed-media studio. All the techniques build in complexity and they are demonstrated very well in step-by-step photographs and text. Examples of artwork is numerous and varied and so the art gallery is outstanding.As a new, self-taught collage artist, I am inspired to rework my best images and create new versions on various "canvases." This book as a great addition to my reference library. The only con to the book, and it's minor at that is some confusion I have with the materials needed for printing on or using as "carriers." Specifically, the list of polycarbonate, plastic sheets, polyester films. I have to take notes to keep track of which technique to try first as I shop for more materials but I am excited to start.This book has been long-awaited by digital artists and I congratulate Digital Atelier on the launch and applaud the three artists for their generosity.
I was recently introduced to the work of Dorothy Simpson Krause. In looking through her stunning portfolio on her site ([...] I found a reference to this book. I had just purchased a wide-format Epson printer, so finding this book was like mana from heaven. The book is a fantastic overview of what you can (and can't) do combining digital and analog printing techniques. For each technique presented, the author covers caveats for particular printers, as well as necessary tools. Techniques are presented in a very straightforward manner, with many chapters including an aside of "creative explorations" for you to further explore the aforementioned techniques. The color plates alone are worth the price of the book. This book is a must have addition to any digital art studio bookshelf.
As a graphic designer, I spend most of my time on the computer and have sorely missed creating with my hands. This book is bringing me back to that in an exciting way. Contrary to some reviewers I am very glad the book doesn't indulge too much in Photoshop instruction (although it does give information about Photoshop that is most relevant to the processes, like print specifications). That would be a waste of space because there are a gazillion Photoshop books out there, but these techniques are much more rare and need as much space as possible to teach them. The authors do a great job of this. Very clear, thoughtful and succint writing. No wasted words.To experiment with all these processes could take years, which means to me that the book is a valuable investment. The imagery is extremely inspiring (especially Krause's). It's much more sophisticated than the cover art would lead you to believe. There are some images where I still wonder "how did she do THAT?" when it comes to things like assembling clear polycarbonate (which is the only material I'm having trouble finding) over a tin panel or a mirror, but that doesn't lessen the quality or usefulness of the book. I hope that, someday, they come out with a second edition.

I bought this book about a year ago, and have found it very useful. Useful in re-thinking what printmaking is and can be, useful in fairly good details on some quite interesting techniques. This isn't for the beginner I don't think but as I have my own etching press and a good printer with a straight thru path it opened up a world of new possibilities to me.Pros: A huge variety of processes. Lots of illustrations of working with the materials.Con: Some processes do require access to expensive equipment, but with some imagination this isn't as limiting as first appears. Some references and specific equipment is dated, most OK.I've seen criticism of their art - but that's not even relevant, art is about PROCESS, and the biggest positive about this book is that it is all about process. One page alone started me down a road of exploration that has lasted 10 months now - and I don't see the end. Four years of graduate art school didn't excite me this much. [...]

The Summer Tree is part one of the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy. I had picked it up after watching a Booktuber gush over Kay’s writing.The Summer Tree follows 5 Canadian college students who, following a university lecture, are transported to another world.Now, I’m a sucker for portal fantasies, but this one was a bit different. Usually, protagonists are a little younger, and, well, maybe a little smarter.It wasn’t until 22% into the book that any of them thought to remark on the strange world they found themselves in, where magic is real, the king of dwarves chills in the castle with a human mage, and vile, dark creatures are following and attempting to kill them. Yet it takes around 80 pages for any of them to remark on this and express concern, even though some have been having casual sex with the castle-dwellers.So, umm, yeah.This took me three weeks to read, which is obscene for a book less than 400 pages. I really struggled to believe the characters would react the way they did in the situations in which they found themselves, and that effort to suspend disbelief kept me from ever really connecting with any of the main characters, which is a major problem if you expect someone to invest their time in a trilogy, assuming it follows the same characters.The book also ended on a cliffhanger, which I hate beyond almost everything in the known universe, as it seems a cheesy way to attempt to goad readers into coming back.I don’t think this reader will.While I didn’t loathe the book—Kay actually had some really good thoughts and various assorted passages that were relatable—it was too uneven to make me want to continue the series.3 out of 5 stars.
I believe this series was much celebrated when it came out in the 1980s. Thing is, Kay's books have gotten MUCH better since this series.He writes unique fantasy historical novels, each set in an analogue of a very crucial and interesting period of real history. An example is the Courts of Love of southern France just before the Abigensian crusade screwed everything up. Another is the decline and fall of the southern Sung Dynasty in China. A third is Constantinople just before the fourth "crusade" destroyed it. A fourth is the war between moors and Christians in Spain, before the reconquest. These are well-written, rather romantic, novels with convincing, three-dimensional characters (at least to me.) But in these worlds gods are real and magic works. They are among the best fantasy novels I've ever read. So skip this series and read the later novels.
Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry is often compared to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, but in language, tone, theme and in fact general setup, it has always struck me as more like Steven Donaldson's first Thomas Covenant trilogy. Ultimately, there is much here to like and enjoy, though it is not a patch on Kay's later works which often approach genuine artistry. Worth reading, nevertheless, these books boast a rather unique and fun setting, a pseudo-Celtic approach to its myth, and a generally fairly original approach to '80s fantasy. The down side is the current price; at $12.99 per novel in the trilogy, they are overpriced for my taste (particularly when they are readily available in mass market paperpack at $4.00 each, including shipping).On the negative side, as I mentioned the language does not approach the artistry of Kay's later works. Kay was still learning his craft here, and his beautifully lyric language in his later pseudo-historical pseudo-fantasies is not in evidence here. While not being truly clumsy, the "high fantasy" language stretches are less than stellar. They border on clunky without often transcending the limitations of the style, and that may be why some reviewers compare this book to the Lord of the Rings (they may also be aware that Kay was of great assistance to Christopher Tolkien in preparing J. R. R. Tolkien's manuscripts for publication as The Silmarillion). The more modern English, on the other hand (such as the chapters set on Earth, or the parts when our five travelers are speaking, for example), is clear and simple, a kind of effortless prose which does not get in the way of the story.Characterization is deft without being particularly deep, though there are some highly memorable characters with believable flaws and quirks. Many, if not most, of the characters resonate as being real, if not always likeable or approachable in every respect. For me, many of the characters motivations and responses are a bit over the top, but this is heroic fantasy, and heroes require larger-than-life motivations and actions. Few of these characters will live on in your imagination forever, but Kay's work with them gets the job done.The overall world is very nicely drawn. While some complain about things being too much like Tolkien ("the lios alfar are just elves"), and others that things are different ("the dwarves shouldn't be like that"), I found that Kay put a unique spin on most of concepts in the book, and explained them well. While the nature of the primary evil things is left very vague, I think that actually works to let the reader ascribe characteristics to them which make them more frightening, anyway. In general, the world is a startling original take on some fairly hoary old concepts and fantasy chestnuts; the nature of Kay's gods and godesses, in particular, is intriguing.It is worth knowing, going into this book, that it is rather dark for "high fantasy." The world is often described as a tapestry, with the creator known only as the Weaver, the antagonist is the Unraveller. The unraveller's goal, like many if not all primary sources of evil in modern fantasy, is rulership over the entire world, whether it likes it or not. The antagonist is pretty evil, and at least one of his actions in the first novel is perhaps offensive (though necessary, from a narrative standpoint, given his immortal and invulnerable status). You can't write about evil without contemplating evil, though, and in this case the evil is a lot less bloodless and distant than it sometimes appears in other high fantasy, and bad things happen to our heroes.The antagonist, Rakoth Maugrim, is called the Unraveller.That leads to my chief critique of the concepts and plotting of the story. Kay often creates expectations through the use of language which are not met, a flaw which becomes more apparent as the trilogy progresses and therefore may not be a completely accurate complaint about this book. The "unraveller" designation is one such thing;it creates a strong impression that the goal of the antagonist is the destruction of the world (the tapestry), when in point of fact he has no intention of destroying when he can rule instead. The overwhelmingly similarly named "darkest road" and "longest road" which figure heavily in the climax is another (two very different things for two very different characters) is another such example.The price point on the book is a bit high, given that this book has been out since 1983. I nearly knocked off a star for that alone, but since, in general, the editing was very good, I elected not to do so. I did notice a few things here and there: a king "reins" instead of "reigns," for example, and a character named Colan was unfortunately changed to Colon in one instance (a particularly unpleasant sort of mistake), but the number of things I noticed was certainly less than ten and probably only five.All in all, if you enjoy 1980s fantasy, this is a particularly unique example of it and worth a read. If you do not enjoy that particular kind of fantasy, you may want to give it a miss.I have been reading fantasy and science fiction since the early '70s, and as I have aged my tolerance for run-of-the-mill works and the ordinary, tried and true style of concept generally leaves me cold these days. Even in the '80s, I remember being singularly unimpressed with the "five ordinary people from our world travel to a world of high fantasy, and meet their Destiny there" style plotting. But if you give it a chance, Fionavar will repay a visit with some joy. You just need to decide if the investment in what amounts to $36.00 when the books are readily available for $12.00 in mass market paperback is worth it.
I was overjoyed to find this trilogy had finally made it's way to Kindle. Firmly in the traditional fantasy genre, this is a clever weaving together (pun intended) of Arthurian legends and Celtic myth. There will be little of genuine surprise to fantasy readers, but a great deal of satisfied pleasure.This is a genre trilogy done wonderfully well. Yes, it ticks the boxes, a group of friends who just so happen to arrive in a foreign place of the eve of catastrophe. Who just so happen to have the skills/knowledge/missing piece of the puzzle to help fight the good fight. Same old story right? Not at all. The clever interweaving of plot lines and character development have the reader properly drawn into the various battles. Invested in hoping everyone 'makes it'.Highly enjoyable for fantasy readers, more so if you have even the foggiest ideas of who the Goddesses of War are, or The Green Man, or Arthur, Genevieve, and Lancelot - with a bit of knowledge, the fore-shadowing simply adds to the joys and tragedies.Fantasy readers should definitely give this trilogy a good look.

Easy to read but filled with fantastic information that we can use in our current and future builds. It is a page turner whether you are a veteran modder or new to the hobby.Luke has been a great resource for us (via email) on three Nerf HIRricane builds already, so “having†him next to us in book form for our three Stryfe builds is going to be great. We have a Kronos mod and a Retaliator build right around the corner, so the book is here right when we need it! When I started getting into Nerf mods about a decade ago, the resources for finding out what the heck you were supposed to be doing were pretty thin on the ground. There were a few scattered online resources, but they were mostly obscured by arcane terminology and steep learning curves. The quality of the advice also varied wildly. It was a process of trial and error, mostly error, if I'm being honest. Some years later, Youtube channels started popping up, and I found out that I was not the only weirdo in the world who enjoyed the idea of being able to lodge a dart into my co-workers ear from across the office (bit of a relief for me, less so for my long-suffering co-workers). Outofdarts was one of these channels and I watched everything he put out and learned a lot from him. When I found out that a beginners guide was coming out, I decided to get it, partly in order to show support, and partly to see if there were any tricks that I had missed along the way. It's fair to say the book has exceeded my expectations. The step by step instructions are well illustrated and easy to follow. The terms are defined in a clear and concise manner, with pictures (always a problem when starting out). The links to further reading and viewing material are a great plus. There's even a bit about 3D printing that I'm sure will prove to be a great resource when I finally decide to take a plunge down that road. Overall, I would have preffered this to have been out a decade or so ago, it would have prevented a lot of plastic wastage on my part. Highly recommended for anyone new to the hobby or even veterans who just want this as a resource book in their library.
The book is amazingly and beautifully produced. In a few months, it will find itself in the hands of my nephew and nieces. Despite not necessarily needing this guide for myself, I'm tempted to go buy a second copy directly from the author's website because it's such a well produced product overall. Also, maybe pick up a few of the upgraded motors, flywheels, etc mentioned in the book? Yes, this is a plug. Go give OutOfDarts (dotcom) all the monies!The book being brand new, it arrived as though someone or several people decided to play Frisbee with the package, and it was taco'd to fit into our mailbox. Perhaps Amazon could be troubled to put a "do not bend friggin' books" on their packages?
this is amazing. my son loves nerf guns. what's more-he loves to modify them. this book has clear and easy to follow instructions. it has lots of great ideas. its not just painting guns, its modifying accessories and how they shoot. the only thing I wish it came with-would be a shopping list of how to complete each of the modifications....so parents/friends can purchase the things needed for the mods so you aren't sifting through the book to find them ahead of time. a little shopping list is always helpful. otherwise this book is perfect.
Some nice general rules for modifications based on blaster type, as well as some useful tricks and tips applicable to opening and modifying any nerf-type blaster. Fantastic full-color illustrations throughout, with clear photography and pleasant color design and layout. Good advice on tools and techniques. Recommended.
So easy for the reference when you're busy modding streaming on the PC and in a call and don't have a device to spare for googling. Someone knows how to take studio photography. Very easy to see and understand the directions and it's written for all to understand. Definitely for beginners.
