I have no clear favorites given the overall quality of his work but want to mention some highlights:No 3 "Gun 2" with a priceless expression, No 2 "St. Patrick's Day" with a staggered stern seriousness, No 9 "Candy Store" which is simply beautiful or beautifully simple, No 16 "Corner Cigar Store" with a good dozen stories in a single frame, No 2o "Watchman" with one of the most compelling compositions I ever saw, No 28 "Bikini" with life in 3 panels and multiple verticals, No 35 "Bodybuilder" where reality melts with its symbol, No 48 "Cafe terrace" where most of us would walk by but Klein captures life divided etc etc...I also like Klein's technique. As much as possible in focus, never care about blur, push the film as high as it needs to be, grain or no grain. Content is King.Otherwise, Thames & Hudson delivers an incredible quality product for a very low price. The choice of essays about Klein and his work instead of lengthy texts at the beginning is spot on.

He and Gypsy Rose Lee first met as teenagers (she much younger) in a Michigan bookstore where he was a clerk and she was still Louise Hovick, browsing for books to buy and read between her acts with sister June (Havoc). George recommended and sold her a copy of Shakespeare's sonnets. In his adult years in NYC, George was, for some time, the literary editor of Harper's Bazaar, the fashion magazine that also published articles and stories.While George was sometimes a writer, his greatest talents were as an editor helping other writers find their voices (& publishers if needbe) and also finding and befriending significant talent in the arts (literary, music, visual, theater, etc).About 2 years before the USA entered WW-II (07Dec41), George had the dream of creating a boarding house in Brooklyn where such people would reside and provide ideas and company to each other. W.H. Auden, Carson McCullers, Gypsy Rose Lee, Benjamin Britten, Jane & Paul Bowles, Oliver Smith, and Klaus Mann, were among the more prominent residents but the house became an evening gathering and party place for all kinds of well known and up-and-coming artsy people.Under George's excellent tutelage, Gypsy wrote and published "The G-String Murders" plus gained the skill to later write her eponymous "Gypsy: a Memoir" and much else. George similarly helped Carson McCullers with her work (& life). The apartment/boarding house was nicknamed "February House" because so many residents had birthdays in that month. While the house folded shortly after Pearl Harbor, it had a very significant and lasting effect on mid 20th century fine arts.Author Sherrill Tippins did a fantastic job of integrating her research and telling her story as if she'd lived in that time and place. Her treatment of Auden and McCullers is especially detailed and she gives us behind the scenes looks at the experiences and motivations that shaped some aspects of their works and their lives.
Sherill Tippins has done an amazing job of finding the significant narrative threads in the chaotic convergence of creative lives that occurred in the months before Pearl Harbor when Harper's Bazaar editor George Davis and British expatriate poet W.H. Auden rented a brownstone on 7 Middagh Street in Brooklyn Heights and actively recruited other creative artists to live with them. Among the co-renters were Carson McCullers who had recently published her highly acclaimed first novel, "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter," soon-to-be famous British composer Benjamin Britten and his parnter, singer Peter Pears, unpublished novelists Paul and Jane Bowles, Broadway set designer Oliver Smith, writer Richard Wright and his wife, and burlesque sensation Gypsy Rose Lee, who it turns out was the most reliable in the rent-paying department and joined the little "creative commune" on the condition that she could bring her own cook and maid. Her fiscal reliability and drive along with Auden's willingness to take on the unpleasant role of house disciplinarian (collecting rent and other "dues" and establishing and enforcing many house rules) are probably sufficient explanation for why this menage managed to last the two or three years it did.Tippins wisely focuses her attention on the leading figures (without neglecting to name the many others who partied but did not reside at 7 Middagh--Salvador and Gala Dali, Lincoln Kirstein, George Balanchine, Erika Mann and her brothers Klaus and Golo, to name a few). One passer-through, Anais Nin, christened the dwelling "February House" because so many of the residents had February birthdays. Tippins has a good knowledge of the works of these creative people and is able to see how one of the artists intentionally or inadvertantly influenced a subsequent work of one of his or her co-residents. For example, McCullers was struggling with the novel that would later become "The Member of the Wedding" when she was able to appropriate an experience from Chester Kallman's childhood to explain her heroine's profound sense of alienation and abandonment (Kallman was Auden's lover).Tippins other great achievement here was her ability to slice through history and palpably recreate the political atmosphere in pre-war New York and to do so in a way that reflects on both British and US perspectives. She takes a good hard look at the criticism expatriates like Auden, Christopher Isherwood, Britten, and Pears faced from the British press and fellow artists who chose to remain in Great Britian during the war. She is similarly insightful in her analysis of the role the Mann family had in trying to get an apathetic America to respond to the European crisis. A lesser writer might not have bothered with these issues and chosen to report only the salacious and saleable anecdotes about the goings-on of the February House residents.I highly recommend this book to anyone even passingly interested in one of the artists who lived at 7 Middagh Street (you're sure to learn something new), to anyone who ever wondered how great works of art come about, or to anyone interested in knowing how history and art intersect. I'm sure I'm going to use Tippins's Selecte Bibliography as a basis for future Amazon.com purchases.
7 Middagh Street literally doesn't exist any longer. It was torn down to make way for an Expressway. During the last decade of his life the poet Frank O'Hara lived in four different apartments in Manhattan and at least one of them has a commemorative plague. If 7 Middagh Street were still standing the entire building would have to be bronzed. George Davis, the fiction editior for "Harper's Bizaar," rented and renovated the house with the assistance of friends W. H. Auden and Carson McCullers. Together they sought to create a kind of year round Yaddo - a boarding house for artists. They were joined by Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, Jane and Paul Bowles, Gypsy Rose Lee, Oliver Smith and Klaus Mann (among others). This is their story. I enjoy a good cousin book, and I had no idea this would be a cousin book until reading, so this was a great surprise!Anise is a very distinct character, with goals and personality traits that are common, but not ones that necessarily get a lot of focus. For example, sure many high school kids want to leave home, but plenty are happy in their hometown and don't want to leave. Anise knows what she likes and what she wants and she's not embarrassed by it. Plus part of her identity is being a niece, and her name is literally Anise, which I didn't realize until now so I feel like sharing. Anyway.There are two transracial adoptees in the book. Nothing about their representation stood out to me as problematic. I'm not a TRA so it's not like I can give a stamp of approval there, but nothing super concerning jumped out at me, I'd love to here what other reviewers think of the rep. It is cool to have TRAs who aren't just young children in a book, so that was different than what you traditionally see.The romance is cool, and the secondary characters are well developed in a way that you're sad they don't each have their own book.Basically the description is very accurate, if you like Jenny Han, Morgan Matson and contemporaries in that vein, then this will be your cup of tea. (and I do, so it is.)

The sun has been out in full force, the grass is starting to turn lush and green, the temperature is rising–it’s time to start picking your summer reads, folks!I know it is that season, too, because I have DNF two heavier novels this week. I’m too restless to try and sit through them. I needed something fun–and Laura Silverman’s Girl Out of Water was just the ticket to save me from my slump.The blurb is a little cringey at first glance (Lincoln has a disability, he shouldn’t be defined by it). If I didn’t know anything about the context or author, I might turn away from this one. However, I’ve followed Laura Silverman on Twitter for a long time, and there is no way she would treat someone with a disability with anything but the utmost respect. And she absolutely does. Lincoln is one of the most delightful YA boyfriends that I have read in a long time. His relationship with Anise is adorable, but also respectful–no one is pressuring anyone here, there isn’t any unnecessary sexual drama, and I love that.There’s a lot of swearing, which…if you have followed me for any amount of time, you know that bothers me not at all. Still, it’s surprising for this style of YA novel. I like that Silverman didn’t hold back, since obviously most people don’t in real life–but I could see it being a problem for some.“Summer reads†are always pretty fast books for me. I read this in only a few hours. Once I started, it was hard to put down–Silverman’s characters are captivating, and they drive the story. It’s a book full of normal, every day people dealing with normal, every day drama…plus a little extra. Totally one you should add to your beach bag this year. Just maybe leave the banh mi SPAM at home.
This was a great coming of age read, where our heroine grows a lot over the summer....which over simplifies the book horribly. Anise and the other characters are so well-drawn by the author that you can't help but be sucked into the book, the emotions, the messes Anise creates and the fun/growth/heartbreak/actualization that occurs. And totally loved all the surfing and skateboarding - the author did an amazing job of making you feel out there with Anise as she's riding various boards.
This book is delightful — a charming and romantic beach read, but with depth. California girl Anise’s summer plans are turned upside down when she’s forced to make an extended trip to Nebraska to help care for her young cousins. There, she meets dreamy skateboarder, Lincoln, who challenges her in both silly and significant ways. She also begins to confront the baggage that’s come along with her mother’s abandonment. There’s even a mini road trip in this story, cementing its status as a Katy Book. Laura Silverman’s prose is an unusual but appealing blend of lyrical and gritty, dropping me right into Anise’s world. If you’re a fan of Sarah Dessen and Emery Lord, definitely pick up Girl Out of Water!
I read this book cover to cover in two days. I was captivated by the characters, character development and the quality of the storytelling. I am a parent who has raised my kids at the beach. They have spent their lives on surfboards and skateboards. I read this book because the author is the child of friends of friends. The subject matter intrigued me because I have lived watching the story in my own backyard. I was flabbergasted by the quality of technical detail that the author put into the story. For EZ readability I put this in the category of my favorite authors of fun novels

Went through this text while in my first semester of a Sports and Performance Psychology class, SOOOO GOOD! My outlook has changed for the better and I feel more excited and prepared than ever to move forward in this career. Would love to meet the author and shake his hand!
I started a class while I was deployed and knew that I wasn't going to receive a paper version of this book in time. While I do enjoy reading digital books, I've always preferred highlighter to paper for text books. Well, a kindle version of this book worked perfectly in a pinch. I downloaded the night before class and got an "A" in the class. In the future, I just might do another e-textbook. Oh yeah, the text was written clearly with excellent references. It could easily be a good leisure read. Not bad for a textbook.
Probably only 1 of the 2 or 3 textbooks I've read so far in college. The author has some really good points & its easy to comprehend even if you don't have a Sociology background. Thoroughly enjoyed this paired with the class I took. Came in good shape, going to send back soon.
While I initially purchased this book for a class that I was taking this semester, I was surprised by the fact that this book had opened my eyes to a whole other side of sports that I was failing to see.
I hated reading this thing for class.
Arrived quickly, good read.
