"The Punch" was an excellent book. A little repetitious, as other reviewers have indicated, but otherwise the author took a difficult topic and did a fine job. A few points on the content. There is disagreement as to who threw the first punch- Kunnert or Washington. Kermit and Kareem say that Kunnert threw the first punch. Kunnert and referees Bob Rakel and Ed Middleton say that Kermit threw the first punch. Regardless of who threw the first punch, Washington was completely at fault for viciously attacking Tomjanovich, who was trying to break up the fight. If Washington was concerned about his safety, he should have put his hands up or moved elsewhere on the floor. Washington had a history of NBA fights, at least three of which caused his ejection . This includes one fight in practice in which he beat up one of his own teammates.In my opinion, Washington had a chip on his shoulder, and this chip was exacerbated after the fight and seemed to have a racial aspect. According to Washington, his lengthy suspension, loss in the civil suit filed against him and the Lakers, and his inability to find steady, long-term work were due to the fight and to racism on the part of the NBA, the public and the world in general. In 1995 he applied for the job of Athletic Director at American University. He was not chosen because he had no front office experience, but AU said he could come in as an Assistant AD and gain experience. Apparently this wasn’t good enough for Washington. He said he should be made the AD because of his name, and the experienced person should be under him as the Assistant AD. He had a lawyer send a letter to the NBA asking for $5 million dollars because he felt there was a conspiracy to besmirch his name. The NBA paid him nothing. earlier, when his agent was trying to get the best possible outcome on his suspension, Washington almost loused up his chances by talking about watermelon and fried chicken. He did many good things, his friends spoke well of him, and he had a difficult childhood, but he seemed to be a volcano waiting to erupt.
This book was recommended to me by a coworker who thought the lessons of the life-long impact of an incident, and how they dealt with it, on two different people would be applicable to some of my own life events. The recommendation was a solid one, and I appreciated learning about (I can't say more because I never knew about "the punch" until I read the book) "the punch" and how Tomjanovich and Washington dealt with not only the physical aftermath of the incident, but also the emotional and mental aftermath.The lesson is easy, if not predictable, but having it play out as you read it and realizing two men really experienced this helps to make the lesson more applicable.I was less impressed with the writing, which I felt needed a good editor. Major stories were repeated and quotes were often reused.
Feinstein is a fine writer but you wouldn't know it from this. This really should have been a retrospective article in Sports Illustrated, not a full-sized book. I often thought there were printing errors in my copy because I was reading similar passages over and over. But no, I suppose Feinstein needed to get a decent sized book so he did what he had to do.But at least I have a better overall view of Kermit Washington. He's a really great guy in many ways, very charitable and caring. The problem is he's handled just about everything relating to "the punch" poorly. He blames another player, tells Rudy how much he's suffered in a rare meeting, sues the NBA, etc. etc. I think it was John Lucas who advised him to take responsibility and move on, not say "I'm sorry, but...". Unfortunately, Washington hasn't taken this advice. I hope someday he does, because there's no winning when you look for excuses and scapegoats in something horrific you've done.

John Feinstein has again transported us to another world. He is the master at helping lead the reader somewhere he is not likely to go on his own. Feinstein is a master storyteller. This story of the effect one moment on the lives of two men is both fascinating and compelling.
Good book and very interesting reading. Some parts a little repetitive but overall a good book.
Now, I finally know the when, what, who, how and why of this story. All sports fan should read this book.
An interesting story that I knew nothing about before I read the book. It's amazing to me how one 5-second incident can affect lives forever. But I think the lesson of the book is that you don't HAVE to let it affect you forever. It is, of course, just the author's take based on his interviews, but it is sad that it seems Kermit Washington has never been able to move on from something that happened in 1977. Bitterness is a nasty poison.

From 1995–2000, he worked at the U.S. headquarters in Mountain View, and since then in Herzogenrath, Germany. Holger Keding was born in 1970 in Kempen, Germany. He studied Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Aachen University of Technology, where he received his doctorate in 2002. He joined Synopsys in 2001 as Corporate Application Engineer, focusing on system level design and simulation methodology. Markus Wloka was born in Heidelberg in 1962, and grew up in Kiel, Germany. I like this book so much that I've given copies of it to my close friends. The Developer's Guide to Debugging is a fantastic little book. This book focuses on the general topic of debugging C and C++ code; however, much of what is said can be useful for other programming languages (e.g. ObjectiveC or C#). Although others have written books on debugging, this book really got to the heart of the matter for me. The focus of the book is software development, but since modern digital design is really software design also, I feel this book should prove equally useful to those doing hardware design also. Of course my specialty, Electronic System-Level design using SystemC, fits perfectly.One of the things I like is that the book is not overly long, and each section has a nice summary of key concepts at the end. I also like that it covers topics for debugging code without debug information and provides strategies for trying to finding hard to repeat bugs. They also point out how debug tools can affect the bug, which brings up the "Heisen bug".Chapter 2, A Systematic Approach to Debugging is the most important chapter of the book. If you don't read anything else, read this chapter...twice. Viewing debug as a process is very important, and I think any engineer, whether hardware or software, will benefit from this insight. We apply rigorous processes to most everything we do in engineering until we get to this. I cannot recall the number of times I've seen engineers pull up a waveform or dive into GDB before they've really considered where the issues are. What usually follows are hours of wasted forays until they stumble on the problem. Follow the systematic approach shown in this book and you will get to the root of the problem much quicker. This chapter covers both strategy and provides a classification system for bugs.Subsequent chapters provide insights into specific areas and provide valuable tips and approaches to recognizing and solving problems in this area. After reading Chapter 2, you don't have to read the book sequentially, but can go directly to any area. I recommend reading chapter 11, which will help you to write code that is easier to debug. The table of contents is a great way to look at this book. In the following, I have added my own comments following a hypen (-) after the chapter titles. 1. You Write Software You Have Bugs - even Hello World has bugs 2. A Systematic Approach to Debugging - Golden Rules and a must read for all engineers 3. Getting to the Root - Source Code Debuggers 4. Fixing Memory Problems - finding memory leaks and bad pointer problems 5. Profiling Memory Use 6. Solving Performance Problems 7. Debugging Parallel Programs - a topic not often dealt with in other books 8. Finding Environment and Compiler Problems 9. Dealing with Linking Problems 10. Advanced Debugging 11. Writing Debuggable Code - this is invaluable and should be required reading 12. How Static Checking Can Help - finding bugs before you execute a line of code! 13. SummaryA. Debugger Commands - a short list of key GDB and Visual Studio commandsB. Access to tools - an excellent list of tools you might not be familiar withBecause debugging is an ageless topic and because this book looks beyond specific tools, I feel this book will continue to be useful for many years to come.In summary, I highly recommend this book for software developers, verification engineers and system-level designers using SystemC (or any standard programming language). RTL designers might not benefit quite as much, but chapter 2 is worth the read.
I've been programming as part of my job for many years and this book expanded my horizons, must read for any systems programmer.Kindle NOTE:[soapbox] Kindle version is OK for this book if you are reading cover to cover but it shows the usual artifacts of an automatic conversion without a human editor reviewing the output and fixing things like chapter headings typeset in the same font/size as the body text. IMO kindle is generally worthless for textbooks, technical manuals and references because of its naive implementation and lack of features including syntax high-lighting, linking words to glossaries, complete navigational interface, scrolling text one line at a time (to align an image with its caption on the same page for instance), inline mathematics that respect background colors and alignments, and a full text / full notes boolean search that organizes hits for individual review. [/soapbox]Languages: C/C++ centric (all examples), most of this book applies to ALL imperative languages.Operating System: It is UNIX centric but includes information for MS Visual Studio.Full Disclosure:I don't even know what VS looks like, The only time I ever use windows is fixing it for a friend, so my opinion could be worthless on Visual Studio, but the information is there. I use Macs but don't program with XCode so I can't give you any info on that specifically at all.In my experience Debugging is both an intuitive art (gained by years of experience working on real machines with real code) and a very demanding science (making observations, taking notes, well-formed hypotheses, careful testing one step at a time) My favorite quip is in section 2.1 where it mentions a problem solution method suggested by R. Feynman: "Write down the problem, think very hard, write down the answer." which is of course an "always true" statement. What this book does is help you to understand how to identify the problem so you can write it down (understand it) and then expands on the "think very hard" clause and makes numerous suggestions of how to go about that (solve it). This leads us to another statement of Feynman: 'The key to solving any problem is in looking at the problem in such a way that the solution becomes obvious.' If you get the depth of that statement, let me say: this book is that good.ALSO:Gives a tutorial on GDB using a subset of commands to get you started with GDB - This tutorial assumes you are learning GDB - not basics of debugging, machine organization and memory layout.Includes an extensive listing of up-to-date development tools, build tools, and testing tools.Gives several insights on debugging library code. (The part I needed most! - very good stuff)Up-to-date Bibliography references as late as 2009, all refs are in 21st century.Includes a xref between basic GDB commands and Visual Studio debugging commands. (Appendix A)This book has increased my skill level and enhanced my understanding of debugging - excellent work by T. Grötker.
I like the book because most of my computer courses taught very little about debugging and how to use a development environment like Microsoft Visual Studion. This book does an excellent job at explaining debugging which is essential to doing a good job at programming.
This book is hard to read; it's like the author is trying to write an instruction manual in undeciperable code.
Technical info is excellent and concise. But all controls except moving one page forward or backward do not work on Paperwhite. Recommend you order the book instead of ebook. The book will be excellent.
A solid text on debugging and profiling for C/C++ programming. It identifies the available tools, both open source and proprietary, explains good debugging methodologies, and provides brief but informative examples. It covers a lot of ground so the level of detail is limited, but it is the best overall compendium of this information that I have seen.
I thought this was a good overall book on debugging. The kindle version has some quirks with spacing but is okay

I don't have an engineering degree, although I am attempting to learn the math and basics involved to write a vehicle dynamics simulator. I've got several books on the subject and this one did not impress me. I've only thumbed through it so far and picked random pages but my impression is too many topics not enough details about any. Each "subject" seems to get about 2 or 3 sentences, at best, so if you don't already know the material this won't really teach you.That said I think it is an okay book for a different reason, it comes with a fair amount of problems to work through, so as a work-book it is probably okay with extra material for the learning. I did not realize when purchasing that it was closer to a work book, and at that I'd like more problems for a dedicated workbook. If I change my mind after digging deeper into the given problem (after first reading another book) then I'll add to the review.
Great real world examples of math using the mechanics of automobiles as its foundation. Wish I had this instead of high school math courses.

This is a very nice introduction to the subject. Diagrams make understanding so much easier, and the book has a number of them. The language is not stilted, like many academic books.

My daughter's name is Salem so when she found a series with her name in it at the library she was hooked! She asked for the whole series for Christmas so that is why I bought them. They are written kind of like a comic book, not the traditional chapter or story book. so just FYI. I haven't not read the stories myself but she is 6 and does just fine with them.
My 9 year old daughter struggles with reading so whenever she cans she avoids reading. This was the first book that she actually got excited about reading and asked for more like this book. She comprehended the story and when I asked her to tell me about the story she could. I am so happy to have found the Salem Hyde books. Because of this I was able to find her other similar graphic novels that she has enjoyed reading.
Bought this as an end of year gift for one of my students who got into this series this school year. Also bought a copy for me to keep in my class library and read. Awesome series of course. Book 1 was on the Texas Bluebonnet list this year.
Great kids book
These books are so well drawn and really funny. It's mainly Frank Cammuso's art that sold me but I am saving them for my future grandkids.

Whammy’s still trying to hold onto his remaining five lives as he helps Salem navigate her new magic powers. In Big Birthday Bash, Salem has a friend’s birthday party to attend, but the local Mean Girl is trying to one-up her gift. Will Salem use magic to come out on top? You know she will – the question is, what is going to happen next?This is my first Salem Hyde book, and I enjoyed it so much that I’m going to go back and get the first one. The art is adorable; it’s cartoony, expressive, and fun. Salem is a kid who happens to be able to use magic; she’s having fun with it. She makes herself big, she shrinks other people down, she just wants to have a good time. Poor Whammy is great as her put-upon companion who ends up getting into his own trouble (wait until you get to the Slurpees) as he accompanies Salem on her travels. It’s a great story for younger readers, and the graphic novel format teaches sequence and pacing.

The cartoon style reminds me of things you might see on the Cartoon Network, which just means more eye appeal for the kids. Frank Cammuso's story and art are great and I'd like to read more about this troublemaking character.I received a review copy of this book from ABRAMS, Amulet Books and Netgalley in excchnage for an honest review. This is a cute little series particularly aimed at girls. Full of hi-jinx and escapades with no lessons learnt, Salem and her teacher, Whammy the cat, annoy each other but are becoming good friends. I particularly like the art which in this book is b/w drawings with shades of pink. The cover is pink and book one had a green cover with the illustrations inside shades of green. Cute and funny.

The story highlights the successful rise of THP, led by founder, Chairman & CEO Tran Qui Thanh during the rapid establishment and growth of the Vietnamese economy in the 1990s and into the 21st century. THP fits nicely into the backdrop of Vietnam rising to become a powerful force in Asia’s economy.Despite being so personally involved in her family & THP’s growth, author Phuong Yuen Tran spends the book highlighting the growth of THP, the company. The novel looks at Vietnam’s economic impact as from an intellectual & business viewpoint rather than an emotional one. The novel comes across more as a textbook for successful business practices rather than a story about a family rising out of poverty by building a well-regarded business (which could be a completely separate story altogether). Under a different context, Tran can really go deep into the narrative around her parents and develop their characters.The book has an interesting setting and political context - highlighting the trials, tribulations and growth trajectory around the family’s rise to success with a significant credit and homage to her Father, the founder of the company.

She graciously and generously takes readers into the inside of the leading beverage company in Vietnam. THP is a great example of successful companies by constantly learning and innovating not only its products, services, but also its processes and management.Thank you, Phuong, for writing this book and sharing it with the world. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially if you want to learn about business in Vietnam.
Competing With Giants is many powerful stories rolled into one: a family’s rags-to-riches entrepreneurship journey, a fascinating look at life and business in Vietnam, the story of a young Vietnamese woman who dares to defy stereotypes and break with tradition in order to pursue her ambitions. It’s a lesson in values, in cultural norms and the often tumultuous road to success. I found myself rooting for the author as I’d root for the heroine of a page-turning novel, and when I finished reading, I felt like I’d completed an introductory MBA class -- and wished I could go back for more. I also felt energized by the author’s family’s motto, which they have lived out many times over: “Nothing is impossible.â€
I was given a copy of this book by a colleague who had read it. I just ordered another copy so I can keep it on my shelf. The business side of the book reads like a business school case study and is very impressive. You learn a lot about being the "little guy" in business and how you can apply tactics to get ahead regardless of the competition you face. There is another side of this book that makes it hard to put down. It is written about the company owner from his daughter's perspective and is filled with push and pull in the family dynamics that exist in a family run business. She will inherit the company but not because she is his daughter but because of the tough love he gave her and how she proved herself a worthy millennial CEO. Her advise is very different than what women in the US are being told about how to succeed in the boardroom. If you run a business or want to be a woman leader on the rise this is a must read.
Really admire what Dr. Thanh, her father, and THP have achieved in more than 20 years. How amazing a local company could compete directly with big giants like Coca-cola and Pepsi in Vietnam. Great lessons for any local company to be learnt, survived and grow in the very competing environment nowadays. Hope that Phuong as a new generation of leadership, she can bring THP to global successfully in the near future.

Three women from different walks of life become connected through unusual circumstances on Galveston Island during its post-storm stage. I was engrossed from page one, and the book held my interest throughout. There's a twist near the end that I never saw coming. This is a favorite book this year.
This book was a good read. This is my second Ann Howard Creel book, I liked The Magic of Ordinary Days very much, have recommended to many people. Creel writes unusual stories based on events that really happened. Creel does not to stick to the basic romance formula, her characters don't always end up happily ever after. Her characters are more true to real life and they are believable. Read this one, but be sure to go on to The Magic of Ordinary Days, because it is better.
I lived in Galveston for a couple years and was interested in the story based on the history of the Seawall. And the story started strong with weaving history compelling characters on the verge I'm beginning their lives. I don't care for the dark turns their lives took and found the book ended flatly when it had held so much promise.
As a lover of historic fiction, I found this book not only interesting but beautifully written. As a transplanted Texan, I particularly enjoy exploring the history of this great state. I have read a lot about the horrors of the hurricane that took thousands of lives in 1900 on Galveston Island but this one explores the aftermath of that storm through the lives of two girls from the wealthiest social class to the lowest social and economic class.
I have never written a review before. But I wanted to take the time to write this one. This book was wonderful, creative, and insightful. The characters were fascinating. You are transported to their world and reminded how tragic natural disasters were and are. This work of art also serves to remind any one who reads it that every day we make the choice whether or not to be kind or indifferent. Forgiving or spiteful. The consequences of words misspoken can cause unimaginable damage. You can pull the nail out of the fence with an apology, but you can never completely repair the hole left behind. I would love to know what happens to these characters. Hope there is another book!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Characters were complex with just the right amount of conflict in their personalities to keep it interesting. The author's style of writing lets the reader see events from different perspectives as the story unfolds, leading up to the finale, with several turns along the way.
In recent years I've become a fan of Ann Howard Creel. This book did not disappoint my expectation of an intriguing plot, interesting characterizations, and vivid detail. There were, however, one or two characters who seemed to me to make choices more in tune with the shaping of the plot than with their own interests--my only reservation.
It took me a real long time to read this book. I did not enjoy it. I thought the subject would be a good read but I had a hard time staying interested. But I will say that the end of the book - the last 25% was much better than the first 75%. I guess because the book was wrapping up. I was glad when it was finished.
