This review pertains only to the first half of the book, which I used to teach a university course in basic computer networking for mostly non-technical students. I found the content to be useful for this purpose. Computer networking is a technical subject, but this book covered relevant topics without being overly technical. Numerous instances of practical information as well as real-life examples were provided.I did not find any teaching aids for this book, but it did not appear to be advertised as a textbook, so I don't consider that a deficiency. You would have to created your own as I did if you want it for teaching.The only negative thing I can think to mention is that it lacks a chapter about wireless networking, which I consider to be a major networking service now.I have used other books that were described as "basic", but were really anything but.
If the reader needed to know the subjects covered, this book is fine. I wanted more info on the "Windows" settings involved with security, permissions, user access, etc. than I found in this book.Dan

I read this book with my man-child who is grammar school age. It was long but it had funny points that kept his interest. There were a few morals to this story, although downplayed, that hit home for me. Greg was a money hungry young man. He was talented with a gifts of art and creativity and a knack for making money and a niche of marketing to his classmates. Maura, one of Greg's classmates had a similar passion and knack. The conflict of the story was that they both wanted to use their creativity and money making technique to the same niche. As the story progresses, we see these young people learn to work together. We also see the development of entrepreneurs. The author also illustrates that as we become adults we tend to lose our imagination and our ability to dive into our dreams. All in all, I believe this book is a great read for young people, I give it 4 stars.
I love andrew clements writing style and love how it relates to school stories. I was so excited to read this book after reading the endless best booksellers such as frindle, average and several others. I think this book was pretty good, but had the potential to be great. It was pretty interesting except for the fact that andrew clements always leaves readers on a question or weird thought without any sequel to that book. Overall, andrew clements is a talented writer whose books I would recommend to young readers.

They are big hits, but his nemesis ruins everything. Greg is funny, but a lot of people say he is greedy. This is a really interesting book. It was really fun to read. I recommend this book a lot.

Andrew Clements is an excellent author who teaches through riveting stories without ever talking down to his audience. He also avoids some of the baseline potty humor that pervades kids' lit today. This book, like others of Clemehts' that I have read with my sons, has a timeless air about it. Highly recommend.

This very well-written book goes through the steps of the conception, planning, and creation of the illuminated manuscript. The subject matter is one that could have the potential to be dry and boring, but the author does a wonderful job of educating the reader about how these manuscripts were made, anticipating the readers questions, providing context, and including interesting and exciting stories that relate to the subject.My only wish would be that more of the interesting facts were illustrated with pictures. There are many great photographs of manuscripts, but sometimes the author will describe evidence that particular techniques were used and it would have been wonderful to see examples of them in a photograph. The book leaves me ready to look for more and eager to learn more about the times in which these manuscripts were made.

Chapters 5-9, in particular, focus on what actions we can take to recognize and accurately evaluate risks, and to effectively address them before they become newspaper headlines (think: data theft, collapsed bridges, and the global financial system…).The text is also unpretentious and easy to read, and Wucker’s conversational tone and style makes even the most complex ideas easily comprehensible, and interesting to read about. This well-researched book made me aware of the world around me on so many dimensions. It is a business book with compelling stories and facts, admonishing readers (with a positive tone) to better see and manage the macro and micro dangers around them.The Gray Rhino, a unique species of rhino created for this book, is a powerful metaphor for our life’s decisions in the face of obvious threats. The image of a two-ton animal about to charge at me was enough to take note of Michele Wucker’s experiences, stories, and analogies.The framework, influenced by Elizabth Kubler Ross’s five stages of grief, outlines the stages of response to a threat from a Gray Rhino: denial, muddling, diagnosis/bargaining, panic, and action/trampling. The author does an artful job sharing stories about business, weather, the economy, aging infrastructure, and health scares, among others.While examples like climate change, the global financial crisis, and recurring cyber security threats demonstrated the downside of denial, I quickly saw broader applications for the model. Career choice and career management, for example, are riddled with denial and muddling (kicking the can down the road). Just like the stories about collapsed bridges and data hacking of companies like Sony, there is the parallel story for individuals who ignore the debilitating effects of staying at the wrong job.With a starting point of situational awareness, the model is an effective analysis of how to identify a looming problem, while offering concrete suggestions to take action.
Wow, is this book ever relevant and timely. Wucker takes us on a tour of metaphorical gray rhinos - highly probable, high-impact threats that we would all much rather ignore. Having read the book, I see them everywhere. Yet the message is ultimately one of optimism. Wucker presents a plan for recognizing and avoiding the many gray rhinos threatening us on a global level, in business, and even our personal lives. Let's get this message out, and learn to be rhino spotters.
The clearest wake up call I've read. From my perspective this is a must read for Americans who care.
Wucker has done her homework! The Gray Rhino is full of examples, case studies and stories of "dangers ignored." But beyond that, it includes smart and tangible advice on how to stop ignoring and start facing the dangers we avoid. I particularly liked the ideas on "muddling." That section reminded me that not only are rhinos gray, but so is life. Facing danger and possible trouble won't make everything perfect. Nothing does. But reducing denial and avoidance leads to fewer disasters, better collective outcomes, and a better life. Who doesn't want that? Read, reflect on and practice this book.

I have savored every page within this book, read it multiple times and come the realization that Bruno has been able to capture the essence hidden within the folds between design and art. from the first sentence -- "Today, it has become necessay to demolish the myth of the 'star' artist who only produces masterpieces for a small group of ultra-intelligent..." to the last this book will enlighten creatives from fine art to design. I must have book for your collection IMO.
Munari has no need of me to explain why this work is a classic. So many of us have used it as a guide to teaching and it was a resource from grade-school to University and wonderful just for raising aesthetic consciousness in non artists.He was a born teacher, a gifted artist, a wonderful designer - and a kind and amusing person.

Buy this book! Doesn't matter if you're a designer, anyone artistic will benefit from this book. The chapters are short; they're more monographs on a wide variety of subjects. Mostly, Munari makes you think. Have you ever realized that a car is mobile sculpture?
Bruno's got some good ideas; I liked that he gave a little setting of a Japanese home and talked about his work. Sometimes he goes off on some tangents, not bad but can get a little heady. Very funny guy, very good designer.
Writing in a smooth yet profound way. The book has many chapters, which make it easy to read. I read it in airports and planes (a long trip) and it kept me laughing, it has a fine dose of sarcasm, and learning, Munari doesn't take art and design issues lightly but he remains the best example, other than Italo Calvino himself, of the six principles for literature. I learned more about design and art in those sheets than anywhere else.
