Obviously Reid is very passionate and knowledgeable, and I'm very grateful he put the time into this book. By no means is this review meant to bash the author or the material FWIW. However, I found myself disappointed several times while reading the book at the amount of grammatical errors and repetative sentences throughout the sections. Again, obviously Reid is an expert in the topic and I certainly was able to gain the information he was portraying, it is just a little frustrating that the work was not more thoroughly proofed and corrected. Also, I would not be this picky had the book cost 10-15 dollars...for 30.00 I just expected a little more I suppose, and color pictures should have been included at this price.
I had to read the book, first, before I could give an honest review. When I bought the book, there were none. So much for being number one!First, this book is well written. If you've read anything by experienced writers, like Massad Ayoub, you'll notice the same effort for simplicity and clear language. Reid, however, dispenses with formal linguistic rigidity that maks it an easier read.Second, the information is presented with authority by someene who knows and has studied his craft. He gives credit where it is due and names the source of the idea or method he discusses.Third, the information is thorough - ranging from history to drills, ammo to holster requisites.Finally, the spark that caused me to follow Reid on Youtube in the first place is the treatment he gives, albeit brief, on the reasons why this skill set is necessary and basic as a citizen with God-derived rights.Through this book Reid has delivered a sober and compelling treatise fit for reference and practice.And if you got the Kindle version, like me, all the voluminous photos are in glorious black and white.
It was hard to put this book down; I finished it in a couple of evenings. This book is similar to one of Reid's courses in that Reid packs a ton of information in a small space. I appreciate that this book isn't a bunch of theory, but rather a compilation of the experiences and battle proven techniques of great instructors and warriors. The end of the book is comprised of practice and qualification courses of fire from several renown shooting schools. Great book from cover to cover! I plan to read it a few more times!
Hope a second edition is released to correct all the grammatical errors. Was able to discern the intended meaning, however it detracts from the content, which is of great quality.An absolute must read for everyone from new shooters to those advanced in their shooting career.
Full disclaimer: I have taken several classes from Reid at Valor Ridge but was not compensated in any way for this review.This book on pistol craft distills the wisdom of generations of self-defense shooters into one well-researched and easy-to-read volume. It is part history lesson, part technique manual, and part guide to improving yourself. I have taken several classes with Reid at Valor Ridge and the book is written exactly as if he is having a conversation with you and passing on his knowledge. The book also contains many useful pictures to help demonstrate the material as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a comprehensive history of pistol craft and to anyone considering formal training at Valor Ridge or any other defensive shooting school (the book lists several other great schools!). This book will become a handy reference and refresher to me and will certainly see a lot of use!

Reid does an outstanding job in his book at breaking down complex topics into very easy to understand and practical instruction. The book is extremely informative and easy to read. It’s like the author is simply talking to you in your living room. Whether you are new to concealed carry and handguns or have dozens of years of experience under your belt, this book has something for you. It covers a wide variety of topics including; battle tested proven tactics, necessary equipment, the legalities of using deadly force, along with having the proper attitude and mindset to defend yourself with your pistol effectively. There are also loads of pictures demonstrating the techniques discussed in the book for those who are more visual learners. I’ve read the writings of some of the great firearms instructors over the years such as; Cooper, Ayoob, Farnham, and many others. Reid’s new book definitely deserves a spot on the shelf next to them. The information, instruction, history lessons, quotes, practice recommendations, tactics, and techniques are indispensable to the individual interested in modern pistolcraft. I will definitely be signing up in the near future to train with Reid at Valor Ridge. If you aren’t familiar with the author, he has a very widely followed social media presence on YouTube with tons of great content. His consummate professionalism, passion, vast knowledge of his craft, and friendly down to earth attitude will be obvious to you after watching even one of his videos. I finished this book all in one sitting. What an absolute fun, down to earth, straight forward read. This book knocked it out of the park with the information that was in it. The book was filled with great insight into being a responsible, well refined, proficient armed citizen. It hits all major parts of being a well rounded, ethical concealed carrier. From the mind set of protecting yourself and others to proper pistol manipulation and technique; this book has it! I think anyone at any level of training or gun experience could benefit from this book. Reid wrote a great one here and I hope it isn't his last.

An excellent overview of the history of Norway. Quite readable. Should one want to delve more deeply into individual topics, e.g. the Vikings, the two Olavs, relations between Norway and its Nordic neighbors, as well as Norwegian resistance during World War II, this work presents a good basis from which to proceed. The reader is also provided with an extensive bibliography and adequate index; however, a work of this scope requires more than one map (and that with little detail).
John A. Yilek's HISTORY OF NORWAY fills a need for an accurate, readable, and up-to-date history of Norway in English. This book is the first of its kind in over 70 years. I had been looking for a good history of Norway in english for years. Yilek's HISTORY OF NORWAY (Wasteland Press, 270 pages, $15.95) was the answer to my prayers. The author, for many years a teacher of Norwegian history at Mindekirken (the Norwegian Language and Culture Program associated with the Norwegian Lutheran church of the same name in Minneapolis), had done extensive research and developed his own lectures, which eventually he used to write this user-friendly text, in eight chapters, beginning with Norway's pre-history through the Migration Age, followed by chapters on the Vikings of Norway; the Unification of Norway, Civil Wars, and the Age of Greatness; Norway's Decline; Norway in 1814; From Nationalism to Independence; World War II in Norway; and To the Present Day. Notable is Yilek's treatment of the Sami, Norway's (and Sweden's and Finland's) indigenous non-Indo-European people, for the earliest times through the present. His scholarly bibliography includes some 161 books (in English and in Norwegian), mostly of late 20th-century and early 21st-century through 2013 works. That the book is not intended to be a work of original academic scholarship is obvious from its lack of footnotes. I highly recommend John A. Yilek's HISTORY OF NORWAY for general readers and for students who need a quick but accurate overview of Norway's history over more than two millennia.
The history of Norway is a very good history of Norway -- extremely informative. I highly recommend this book for anyone of Norwegian heritage or who just wants to know more about one of the most beautiful Scandinavian countries.
This book does a nice job of giving a level of detail so that you can pretty easily ready through Norway's history without getting too bogged down. It's certainly not a complete history, but not every book has to be. The problem is that it's really not very well written. Facts might as well be in bullet form, and it largely fails to be either entertaining or engaging.I know a lot more about Norway now, but I had to want it.

An interesting history less known, for instance what happened during WW II when King Haakon VII and Crown prince Olaf had to fled for the Nazi occupiers who tried to killed them by Luftwaffe attacks, after they simply had refused any peaceful collaboration with the Nazi's, but right in time they were saved by the British Royal Navy, and the fact that Norway in contrary with the Low Countries, had never abandoned during the occupation, Amazingly, They remained into offensive against pro's and other Nazi figures, including the Heavy Water mission at Vemork! preventing a possible German atomic bomb!, till the country had been freed itself, simply after Nazi Germany had abandoned on May 9th 1945 in Berlin to the Allies, and the remained Nazi soldiers in Norway were unarmed by the British and Norwegian military.So, Norway and their King and legal government shows us they did'nt intimidate themselves.A right book for the historical buffs, who like to know more of what Norway really have done.A SINCERE HINT! Special for readers in the Netherlands, who also had been suffered under the Nazi occupation, I advise reading this book. To my real opinion, many people in the Netherlands had seemed to be given a too weak picture of defense against such a form of outstanding provokings. (e.g. excisting NSB Dutch National Socialist party), and paramilitary molesters and other wouldbe pro Nazi's, who often betrayed their own country fellowmen, e.g. people with a Jewish background, mostly for getting paychecks.
I am researching Norwegian History in regard to my family’s history. I have read several books. This book appears to be a rehash of other books. Pretty lazy. Very little originality. You would hope for more given the bio of the writer.
Easy read to become well informed about Norwegian history. Covers from the beginning to the present. Highly recommend for anyone before e visiting Norway.
A good overview of Norwegian political history. It is well written and organized. I enjoyed reading it. Good if you are traveling to Norway.

This book was very good and I am very glad that I could read it. It had a cast of great characters that grew over the course of the story and the plot was well paced as well. I really loved the alternative history this title presented and I couldn't put it down. This was a great young adult title and I can't wait to check out the author's other books. The use of the Aztec traditions was fabulous it was a breath of fresh air.
Growing up I was always fascinated by the bloody history surrounding the Aztec Empire. Surprisingly enough, I never realized how awesome of a YA book its history would make until Val Bodurtha's The History Makers landed on my radar.As it turns out, The History Makers was a fantastic debut. Perfectly blending tougher the beliefs of the Aztec Empire with a modern day teenager's coming of age, The History Makers is quite simply unputadownable.From the first page, I liked Myla. She was quiet and somewhat reserved; however, it was easy to tell how much she loved her best friend and little brother. That detail in particular made her easy to relate to from the start. Over the course of the book, Myla does a lot of growing up, and learns how to think and fend for herself. I enjoyed seeing this transition occurred, and better yet, I loved that it wasn't "perfect." Myla didn't just wake up on day and become this fierce fighter; instead, it was gradual transition with lots of ups and downs - moments of strength and weakness. In addition to Myla, I also enjoyed the rest of the characters that were introduced. All of them were not only well developed but incredibly lovable; however, I will say I had a soft spot for Tezca in particular. He reminded me of a Azetec, rebel leader like Dimitri from Vampire Academy, and while he didn't replace Dimitri in my heart (no one every can BTW), he was still pretty darn swoon-worthy.One of the aspect that drew me to The History Makers was setting so I was delighted by Val's fantastic world building. I enjoyed how Val Bodurtha took the beliefs and history of the Aztec Empire and gave it a modern twist. Not only was she able to make it her "own" but she also did so in a way that was well developed and fleshed out. There was rarely a time where I was left confused.The plot of The History Makers was filled with ample action as well as twists and turns. Better yet, it also focused on friendship and romance. It was always exciting to see what the rebels had planed, especially when the stakes for high risk. I also enjoyed seeing Val find a home within the rebel camp. Not only did it allow for character development, but it also caused for a lot of smiles and even a tiny bit of drama. The romance was light in this; however, I liked the slow burn feel to it. It made it more believable, in my opinion.There were two tiny things, however, that I didn't quite like about this one. For one, I felt that the dialogue was awkward and slightly stilted at times. Sometimes it took a while to get to the "meat" of the conversation since there was a lot of pleasantries thrown around...a lot of "hi, how are you." Additionally, the transiting was slightly rough at times too - sometimes including a little too much telling rather than showing. As the book progressed, though, this aspect got better and better.Regardless, The History Makers is a strong debut, perfect for fans of Veronica Roth! Val Bodurtha has definitely landed on my authors to watch list. I can't wait to see how her talent grows!Grade: B+

However, she grows and develops into a mature, purposeful, endearing person of compassion and determination. By the end of the book I loved her!Tezca, the young leader of the rebels has so much on his plate. He’s not much older than Maya and yet, he’s running a rebel camp, planning and carrying-out complicated raids and trying to change the world. At first, the two of them don’t seem to be a fit of any kind. But, Tezca sees something in Maya even he’s surprised to find.Tona is funny and wild and fearless. He’s Tezca’s best friend and Maya’s shoulder-to-lean on. In my head, I pictured him looking and acting a lot like Taylor Lautner’s character Jacob Black in Twilight—without all the wolf-y teeth and hair.Then there’s Amihan. She is Maya’s age; she’s Tezca’s best friend (co-founder of the rebellion); she’s NOT Aztecan, but Asian and she hates Maya. She hates her enough to kill….These characters are but a small part of a very big story. The plot is so unique and so different from anything else I’ve ever read. It’s filled with unexpected twists and turns and surprises. It’s incredibly large in its scope—to change a whole civilization—and yet personal enough to cause changes in just one girl. I truly enjoyed the authors skill in weaving the ancient Mesoamerican Azteca into the contemporary world. Although… I think the book lacked a small amount of background material. How would America and current president of America and the members of the United Nations react to the daily slaughter of sometimes hundreds of human beings in service to Sun Gods who may or may not exist? I wish we could have explored that avenue just a little.HOWEVER, I must remind myself that I’m a 52-year-old grandmother and this book was written for Young Adults and teens. They probably don’t really care about the political background of the world in this book or in their own world. LOLI really enjoyed this book. It’s a quick read (mainly because you can’t stop yourself from reading) and it’s an imaginative, creative world to be a part of, if only for a little while.I gave this story an enthusiastic 5 stars~
If you look at The History Makers solely through the lens of young, young-adult books, then I say this is a 4-Star story. It tosses out quite a bit surrounding plausibility, alternate-reality, and other elements; concentrating on high-school aged kids as they tackle the societal injustices in which they live.At its core, this book is a scream for equality, or at least the opportunity for success. In this story, the Aztec way of life is a caste system of the elite and the 'unders'. However, it adds a cruel layer to this model - namely that the religion fueling this divide is a complete farce, and the Unders pay the ultimate price. They, one a day - once a day, are murdered to appease the deity that allows the Sun to rise.So, from this particular vantage point, the story provides an catalyst for kids to begin to understand the corruption of power.Now, I'm not a young, young adult and read plenty. From my perspective, there isn't anything new to devour. You have the have/nots, teen rebellion, and need for reformation. It flows fine, but there isn't much to grab hold. I didn't care about the characters and assumed, rightly so, how the story would end.3 of 5 Stars - ARC provided.
