I absolutely loved this book! It has always been a dream of mine to travel without baggage. However, I always overpack! In 2008 I traveled to Turkey and visited many of Clara's sites. Her descriptions are perfect and capture the essence of the country. To also be dealing with her "relationship" added another level to her travels. I raced through this book, on a journey I didn't want to end. I recommend this book to all travelers, and especially armchair travelers!
I enjoyed this quick read. It makes me think a lot about how I travel with way too much "just in case I might need it" stuff. And the "no emotional baggage" concept is a really tough one to carry off! I would have liked to know how the author came to end her two-year hibernation due to depression. What made her decide to really live? I hope she does more writing.
This was chosen by my book club members. They did a good job. Bensen has a way with words that make you smile while making you think. The descriptions of her mental health issues are graphic and meaningful, without self pity and amazingly insightful. Thank you Bensen for sharing a most personal journey.
This is a cute memoir and an inspiring read for those of us who pack super light. I enjoyed reading about their adventures through eastern Europe and how they managed when things didn't go as planned. Being on my own quest for the perfect bag, I would have loved to know what bag Clara took, but that's a minor qualm. I wish there was more to the book, and details on their subsequent no baggage trips!
3.5 starsNo Baggage is about a twenty-something learning how to live baggage-free both physically and emotionally. I think Bensen's strength is her ability to paint scenes and landscapes. She makes great use of analogy to familiarize unfamiliar places for the reader. I think she would make a great travel writer. The emotional story throughout the book is interesting enough, but I actually found her self-awareness and deprecation a bit too much. I didn't like how often she seemed to apologize for how she felt, but I understand how painfully self-aware twenty-somethings can be. This book did a good job though of reminding me how uncomfortable my 20's were, so I do applaud her frank approach. On a side note, I really hope she outgrew this Jeff character, he is truly the most painful part of this whole journey. Overall, this book is a bit obvious for someone older though probably really fascinating to read if you're in your 20's or into the YA genre.
Loved the writing. Read it with my daughter while traveling- we both wished we had left with just a purse and a dress! Hope she writes more.
This book can stand proudly on its own even if it is compared to "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. Our book group could have spent more than a single evening discussing "No Baggage". Clara Bensen is brilliant and brave in sharing her personal experience and provides insight for anyone walking the thrilling but stony path that comes with every life.
What a delightful read on minimalism, wanderlust, travel and love. You'll enjoy this refreshing take on a modern romance. Highly recommend.

To give background, I took AP Statistics in high school and a more advanced statistics course in college. I bought this book as a refresher for some biostatistics research that I needed to do. Bad decision. The author needlessly complicates simple concepts by taking a paternalistic stance over the reader: "you're probably terrified by symbols, so let me mansplain statistics to you in a trite, disorganized, borderline-cutesy way." The author tries to reinvent the wheel in order to avoid the use of algebra, needlessly substituting symbols with silly nicknames and elegant mathematical summaries with rambling paragraphs. Most irritatingly, the author cannot write -- concision, organization, and clarity go out the window in this awful, error-ridden excuse for an educational text.If you already have a statistics background, I would absolutely NOT recommend this book. It's cheesy, it's poorly written (so!! many!! unnecessary!! exclamation!! points!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and so utterly inefficient as a review that I felt the need to open up the product page and spend fifteen minutes punching out this warning to potential buyers.
This book absolutely saved my life. I HIGHLY recommend it. I am a graduate student and wish I would have known about it during my undergrad! It reads more like a novel than a textbook, which helped me immensely. For anyone looking to have stats explained to you like you're having a conversation with a very intelligent, but very relatable friend, this book is for you!
It is loaded with formulas. Speaking as a biologist, that is a terrifying sight. I sort of expected a more verbal description, funny, friendly, like Robert A. Day's Scientific English which is really great. So I'm back to begging for help from our statisticians. Hope springs eternal that someone, someday, will write a statistics book for scientists.
Oh, man. I am not a fan of stats. Needed for a class. It is a good book though. Teaches hard to understand concepts in a understandable. way.
The book is written so as to understand and respond to questions we biologists rarely get from people in the field of statistics, especialy agronomists. I am a plant physiology researcher and many times I felt terrified to cope properly with the statistical standards of the college of agriculture and my biological point of view and results. Eventhough I have the basis for staistical analyses, at times I had to accept that the biological point of view didnot met the statistical standards. Now I am not confused anymore as differences are clear to me after studying the book thus I recommend the book as a very clarifiying guide to the experimenter specially in the biological sciences.
This is one of my go to references when I am running analysis or planning an experiment. I have always been really bad at remembering the tiny details in statistics, this book presents them in a way that is intuitive and easy to understand. Better yet it has deepened my understanding of some core concepts that let me choose the right statistical model and given me the tools to argue for why I chose that particular model. I would highly recommend as a desktop reference.
Very easy to follow and explains everything in a way that I can understand. It actually brings a great deal of fun and satisfaction to read and work through the text. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to really get their head around the inner workings of experimental design and agricultural based statistics.

In the end, because “everything has gravity,†the objects fall back to earth, but the boy’s possessions end up at a lemonade stand, while a pitcher of lemonade and cups land near him. As in Chin’s Redwoods (2009) and Coral Reefs (2011), an informational text is paired with imaginative and often striking illustrations. But here, the text is quite brief, and the term gravity is explained only in the appended notes. While the main section of the book illustrates a lack of gravity in memorable ways, it does little to make the concept of gravitational pull more understandable to children. Teachers will find Franklin Branley’s Gravity Is a Mystery (2007) more useful, but Chin’s picture book will be an attractive addition to classroom units. This book was a pretty good overview of things to keep track of when trying to maintain accessibility to websites to those with some kind of disability. I'm a human factors person, so the codes provided really didn't mean much to me, but the concepts and heuristics behind them are valuable for anyone. I would argue that all these suggestions would be valuable for designing an off-line interface just as well as for a web interface. The author even provides a list of tools that the reader can use and where to find them, though a couple of the hyperlinks might not be applicable anymore. I would have like to have gotten a little more background on cascading style sheets and how they are actually implemented, but it might have just been beyond the scope of the book. Overall, a solid little piece of work to keep in the library.
Great overview of web accessibility. Would definitely recommend to anyone starting out in web design/development looking for a way to start making their site accessible to everyone. It's such an important thing that people need to stop looking over when developing websites.

The Accessibility Handbook is written for people who code web sites. It will identify the conditions, both physical and cognitive, that require special coding accommodation and provide sample code and guidance on how to gain compliance with section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act. Compliance is required for all Federal Agencies and contractors. It is also a standard followed by many state and local governments and has served as a basis for other countries implementing accessibility standards. The author defines several conditions that can limit a user in their ability to use a website. Code samples demonstrate techniques for overcoming the challenges some users face. Major topics include users with complete blindness, low vision, audio limitations, physical limitations, and cognitive disorders. The book contains links to other resources and tools useful in coding an accessible website. I tested several and found areas that I can improve. On thing to consider is the number of older users that may need to increase type to view the site easily. This would fall under a low vision condition. I find myself using CRTL+ + to increase font sizes quite often. We give much consideration to making responsive designs to accommodate different devices. How often do we consider the user that has to increase font sizes greatly to read the type? Have we considered how that awesome drop down menu affects a person that must navigate with the keyboard or a screen reader? These are type of issues that would fall under accessibility. I liked this book and would highly recommend it. I learned about website use factors that I had previously never considered. I knew color blindness existed. I did not know there were different types and how things might appear to someone with the condition. I have often used color to indicate a current page in a navigation menu. This is a practice I will alter in future designs. My intention is to make accessibility a prime consideration in my designs. This will aid users with challenges and provide a better website for all. Katie Cunningham's "Accessibility Handbook" (O'Reilly, 2012) is a concise and specific introduction to accessibility (a11y) and 508-compliance. Cunningham provides a "walking tour" of the major types of disabilities that web developers need to consider when creating a site for a11y, illustrating how people with those disabilities will use a site, and then detailing easy solutions and best practices to craft a site with the necessary accommodations. Better yet, she makes strong cases for why many of these accommodations are actually "features" and not "compromises".The book is broken into chapters such that each one focuses on a specific disability. Some of these disabilities may seem obvious (e.g., blindness, deafness), while others may come as a surprise (e.g., color blindess, motion disorders). Having the book sectioned in this way was a smart choice, as it becomes easy to focus on that one type of disability, and to reason about the strategies necessary for accommodating it. The goal of each chapter is to get you (as a developer) into a headspace where you can easily understand how a person with one of those disabilities will approach your site, thus making it easier for you to understand the 508-compliance rules.As a front-end developer without much experience in the realm of a11y, and with no knowledge of 508-compliance, I approached this book as a good place to start. Having finished it, I maintain that it was a good introduction to the subject. Though I got the information about the disabilities and how to accommodate them, there was almost nothing in here about WAI-ARIA--granted: Cunningham cites ARIA, and shows some examples when talking about "Complete Blindness", but she also says that it's too big of a subject to cover in her book. That being said, when I find a good resource on ARIA, I'll be pleased to know that this book gave me a decent framework for thinking about those problems.Lastly, as I mentioned before, Cunningham does a decent job of explaining why many of the accommodations that she describes actually become "features" of your site, and not "compromises". For example: everyone can benefit from having good `tabindex` properties set your form fields. For example: everyone benefits from well-labeled graphs and charts. For example: by making your menus, icons, and other click-targets "adequately sized", you're not only helping someone with Parkinsons, you're also helping people accessing your site from a mobile device. And lastly, my favorite example: by paying attention to the source order of the elements in your site, you're not only helping the blind (and/or anyone else using a screen reader) but you're also making it easier to give your site a responsive design (and I hear it's helpful for SEO, as well).Would I recommend this book? Yes, to someone who needs a quick "walking tour" of a11y--but probably not to someone who is already familiar with the subject, and definitely not to someone who is looking for more on WAI-ARIA.Full disclosure: I received an electronic copy from the publisher in exchange for writing a review.

This book, along with some free materials provided by my place of employment, prepared me to pass my P2 exam within a short period of time. The book is plenty well thought out and easy to read, and has good diagrams. There are multiple errors in the practice exam though, so it gets docked one star for that due to me being confused a couple of times.An example of this: Question: Something easy that you KNOW the answer to...Answer A would state INCORRECT (even thoough you know it is correct) and then it explains why it IS correct? What?Answer B Correct (which would be way wrong) stating why it is way wrong.Answer C Incorrect and why its incorrectAnswer D Incorrect and why its incorrect.This confused me the first couple of times until I realize what to look for. This could definitely be improved.
I studied this prep book and it worked out very well for me! I am certified now and passed the proctored exam with near perfection!If you do study this program, read it thru a couple of times, then test yourself! Do the tests over again to be SURE you've got it down pat!
Way way better than the competitor's prep manual. Still, I've been using this in the parts program I teach at a local college and there are a bunch of errors in the test answers. Someone really needs to edit these things that is familiar with the subjects.
Found this book to be very helpful. Studied it thoroughly and passed with ease. Now waiting for the P1 to become available.
The first time I took the P2 test,I didn't use study material and I failed it by one point.I bought this book and on my second attempt I passed by one point.I think more than anything this book gives you the philosophy behind the answers.It's one thing to understand you answered a question incorrectly yet an entirely different world when you ask WHY you answered incorrectly and that is the beginning of stacking the odds in your favor.The practice test will help you learn your weak areas and shore up those areas with explanations for the correct answer followed by footnotes to the tasks that further explain the reasoning for the correct answer.However keep in mind that the practice test is not the actual test because there are many versions of it. ASE goes through too much trouble to keep the integrity of the test at a certification level. Good luck and God bless
