I ordered this book because I strongly believe she's been penalized more than enough for an utterance of over thirty years ago. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this cookbook when it arrived, and I opened it to find some very intriguing recipes. Curried zucchini and apple soup? Nice! Pickled egg and shrimp? Great! Fried green tomatoes, southern style? Those are on my list for the end of tomato season. Tonight's menu will include slow cooked short ribs in coffee.Yes, she's big on using sugar even in main entrees -- I just omit, as I do with any recipe. (I essentially ignore dessert sections of cookbooks anyway.) Where there's butter, I do use butter (or ghee), but I use common sense on amounts.This cookbook does fill in a hole in my collection -- other than Cajun, until now I had no book centered around Southern cooking. This cookbook of Paula Deen's is worthwhile in its own right, and I enjoy reading her commentary about family members with each recipe.
I just purchased this cookbook and a cute rooster napkin holder in support of Paula Deen. I think it is terrible what the media and all of the companies that are dropping her are doing to her. I have never even seen her show and I only cook because I have to eat but I ordered the cookbook anyway. Maybe I will give it to someone for a wedding present. If I were held accountable for every bad word I said 27 years ago I would be in big trouble! I hear young people use the N word all time, why is it only OK for some people to use it? Double standards I guess. I wanted to order her new book that is coming out but Bantam Publishers dropped her like a hot potatoe, maybe we should not buy any books from that publisher! A BIG Thank You to Amazon for keeping her products available!!!!!!!
This is a really fun read that includes recipes from many of Ms. Deen's extended family. I've made several of the recipes and EVERY ONE has been a hit with my family. The recipes are beautifully illustrated and easy to follow. The recipes are easy to modify if you need to watch calories/fat without sacrificing flavor. My family loves food with depth of flavor and spicy kick and this one fits the bill. I would add that the publishers who cancelled her latest cookbook are fools. To cancel distribution of an obvious bestseller appears to be calculated to hurt her financially to appease the PC crowd. I hope she sues the butter out of them.
some good recipes, easy to follow.I mainly bought this book to support Paula, I feel she was totally thrown under the busfor someones very selfish reasons. The word was spoken 30yrs ago so I've heard,and show me one person on earth who has never never ever spoken a wrong choice of wordsfor any reason. Sick world we have now.I never rate anything to the top, nothing ever is all that perfect, none of us can be!Well there is one-----Jesus---and even He would not agree that He is perfect.
I love all of Paula Deen's cookbooks! She's down to earth and uses ingredients we all have. I bought a copy for me and I think I've bought two others to use as gifts. This arrived in the time promised in good condition. Thanks for a great sale!
This cookbook is special as it has so much family information in the recipes. This is an amazing family that has again come through in tact against the odds, and I like being able to support them in my small way. The recipes are tried and true and the ones I have made have been wonderful. I tend to lower the fat and avoid frying but still maintain the integrity of the recipes. Bobby has shown the way on that. Jamie's program brings family to the forefront which is a Deen tradition. Love the book; love the people.
Came packaged beautifully and is a splendid new book. First one of Paula Deen's I have purchased. But I am looking forward to buying books with recipes compiled by Paula's son, Bobby, because he lightens the recipes which are better than Paula's as far as weight watching goes.But it is fun to have one of Paula's books to remember her by. I do miss the entertainment value of her TV shows. She has such a good sense of humor.
Paula gives typical Southern food her unique flair with help from numerous relatives. . I really enjoyed the stories that accompany each receipe. The receipes were very similar to dishes my mother cooked, having lived the east Ark and born in Alabama. I was raised in Ok. so we never had fresh seafood. I would recommend it. Hope I can buy more before the powers that be remove everything that you built. love you, Trudy D

So many tips throughout that now answer a lot of my questions about why did the yarn twist when working cables and is the direction important.There are chapters on: spinning basics, singles for plying, stand alone singles, spiral yarns, opposing plies,boucles, cable yarns, crepe yarns, coil yarns and novelty yarns. I do think now that after reading this that it does make the light bulb come on for me. If you can understand about the yarn you can select the right yarn for the right project because you understand how it will act when knitted.Many ways showing the differences between plies of yarn.To me this book shows how to experiment with yarns to achieve the right balance for the item you are making.Excellent resource book for anyone that does spin their own yarns, great glossary-very precise and bibliography.
I'm a novice spinner, who still has difficulty with joins and twist, but THE SPINNER'S BOOK OF YARN DESIGNS may be the book that finally helps me graduate to an intermediate skill level! I really like the clear, step-by-step, full-color photos for long draw, short draw, spinning off the fold, and folded long draw. Although I understand each of these spinning methods in concept, I need pictures to show me what I'm doing wrong. Also, there is a whole page--with five photos!-- that illustrates "The Secret to Good Joins".The book has a chapter on "Spinning Basics", followed by nine more chapters devoted to spinning different types of yarn: (1) singles for plying, (2) stand-alone singles, (3) spiral yarns, (4) opposing plies, (5) boucles, (6) cable yarns, (7) crepe yarns, (8) core yarns, and (9) novelty yarns. These chapters not only have step-by-step photos that explain how the yarn is made, they also have photos of problem yarns. The problem yarn pages explain what went wrong with the yarn, how to fix the problem with spinning the yarn, and sometimes include suggestions for salvaging the bad yarn.Inside the back cover, there is a plastic folder filled with reference cards that you can keep with your wheel when you're making a specific yarn. The cards are printed on heavy card stock, four to a page, and are "punched" so they can be easily separated into individual cards and formed into a deck of cards. The black-and-white cards have page numbers that refer you to the color photos and relevant discussions in the main book.There is a wealth of how-to information in this book that goes far beyond my present novice spinner level. I expect to use THE SPINNER'S BOOK OF YARN DESIGNS as a reference long after I have finally mastered the basics of spinning. There is an excellent glossary, an extended bibliography of how-to books on spinning, and there are also many lovely photos of handspun yarns (similar to the photo on the book's cover).
This is a great book! Many people have written how great this book, so I would like to write about the bonus pack! The hardcover book edition has a bonus back in the end of the book. The bonus is 64 unique reference cards. It will be good reference by your side. I strongly recommend you should purchase the hardcover book, not Kindle.
I suspect the only way to get more information than what's in this book is if you could go to a camp taught by some of the most skilled spinners in the same league as Judy Mackenzie, Abby Franquemont or Jacey Boggs.The teaching material begins with a solid foundation of choosing and preparing wool, carding, blending, different ways to prepare fiber for spinning and then moves in to the myriad of methods to produce many different types of yarn. All of this is great stuff fo novice spinners. Each style of yarn has photos showing what each ply looks like followed by how the yarn looks through each stage of plying to the final result, then a knitted swatch and sometimes woven swatches are also shown. I was especially impressed that Anderson knit socks made from the same fiber that was spun and plied differently and then compared the feel and durability of the sock. She even made sure she could distinguish each sock and rotated which was worn on which foot so they'd wear evenly.I cannot express how helpful I've found this book and I think it's one of those books that if you had to get rid of all your books but a few, this would be one of the ones I'd keep.
I lost patience in waiting for this book to be released in Kindle format, so I bought the hardcover. I loved the book itself-and was about 50% through it when the Kindle version was finally released. I have some appreciation for how challenging it is to translate a book with lot of images in it-and this translation nailed it perfectly. The pictures are often arranged on a separate Kindle page-so that you can really zoom into them without disturbing their relationship to the text. I'm sure you can read lots of reviews of the content-but here I wanted to comment on the excellent Kindle translation. I hope this will inspire other Kindle translations of image-rich content, particularly fiber-related.
Fantastic book. After checking it out from the library a few times, decided it was easier just to buy my own.As the book clearly states in the opening pages, it is NOT a learn-how-to-spin book, but is to help people who already have a basic knowledge of spinning consistently get the results they want and how to tailor your spinning for your exact needs and desires. It breaks down 80 different types of yarn, ways to ply them, whether to use S-twist or Z-twist (or even a combination of the two!), how much twist, etc. One of my favorite features of the book is a 4-part discussion, spaced throughout the book, about spinning sock yarns--should I use 2, 3 or 4 plies; should I Navajo or cable ply; which plying method wears the best, etc. The pictures are very good and in the back of the book is a fantastic packet of flash cards to keep next to your wheel for easy reference while you are spinning.

I love how Messiah and Ausha built a friendship before they even thought about starting a relationship. Messiah was there for her whenever she needed him even though he tried to hide his feelings for her. They helped each other heal from past wounds and strengthened their relationship all the more. Regardless of what Deshawn told Ausha, he still apparently had feelings for Porsha. I hope Messiah and Ausha do get married and have a Messiah Jr. I can't wait to see what happens next with Channing and Sole and find out the who the married man was who Sole had an affair with.
Ausha and Messiah started off as friends despite the chemistry they were feeling for one another. They both had a lot of baggage from their past that cause them to have failed relationships with other people. Through all of the hurt and pain of their past, the question that needs to be answered is, "Are the feelings that they have worth them taking a chance on one another"?This is a great page turner. As always, this author did not disappoint. I cant wait to see what happens with Channing and Sole'.
Great read! Really enjoyed this story and that we got to see the relationship in action! So many books end as soon as the couple figures it out and gets together, so I loved that we got to see them together and then get through something! Well done, Ms. Taylor!
I loved Messiah and Ausha’s journey! It was so real and authentic and it felt like I was reading about people I’ve known for years. Can’t wait to see what’s next for these characters
I loved how Ausha and Messiah came together. They each had baggage as most relationships do. The characters were strong but vulnerable too. I especially loved Sole’. She did not play nor did she take any bs. Her story needs to be told AC!
This was such a good book. Was nervous at first in the ending. You came through with a powerful ending.
Ausha and Messiah were a long time coming and they definitely do not disappoint. With every new couple, Ms. AC only makes me fall further in love than I did with the last. With this one, I appreciated the inner conflicts that sought resolution for both Ausha and Messiah, and the steadfastness in their feelings for each other that helps them to overcome those inner battles. Their friendship and the instant chemistry at their first meeting show just how special these two are together. They fall into their own rhythm so seamlessly that the being in love with each other part was never in doubt, and ultimately, keeps me knowing that they can overcome any obstacles.There was potential for so much more drama that I kept praying did not come to pass, and I really thank AC for not going there. Rather, she allowed these characters to have just enough without their stories being inundated with unnecessary conflict. Specifically, I appreciated that Messiah was able to prove his worth, his redemption, and seek healing. I felt for Messiah and really got to understand him, and he won me over with the way he loves Ausha. And Ausha...I felt the little girl in her in her telling her story, and this, too, pulled at my heartstrings. Definitely, this one speaks on the power of forgiveness, family, and letting go. All in all, I couldn't put this one down and found that ending to be simply perfect. I also loved the sibling bond between these characters throughout the story and hope to read their stories soon. In the meantime, way to go Ms. AC on book 13! I see you. Worth the Risk was, indeed, worth the wait!
AC is slowly but surely creeping up on the (very short) list of authors whose work is highly anticipated from me. Worth the Risk was definitely worth the wait! Ausha and Messiah spent a vast majority of this book getting on my gosh darn nerves because they were both so obstinate, but as AC herself says, if her characters don't make you feel in some kind of way (good or bad) has she successfully done her job? And to that I say she absolutely did all that was asked of her with these two. It was a slightly different twist on a friends to lovers tale, with a ginormous heaping drama thanks to Messiah's (former) man-heaux days.Alas! Miss Ausha was not without her own drama, as well. I should have read the other reviews. Luckily, you are reading this... so move along.This is NOT "The Secret Garden". It is "A CONSIDERABLY ABRIDGED Cliff's Notes style childrens re-enactment of The Secret Garden". Nowhere in the description did it say that this was not the real book. It's like half an inch think written in 25 pt. font. My 10 year old daughter read it in less than an hour. Her last book.... Little Women. The real one. 800 pages. I promised her she would like this. Instead she just looked at me like..."really?". And I don't blame her. Seller should update the description.Sorry, but anyone else leaving a higher rating may simply not realize that they received a fraud.PROS: Very pretty cover. Hardback.CONS: See everything I wrote above.

I am not really sure how I missed out on this book as a child so I decided to read it with my daughter. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and zipped through it in just a few days. Frances Hodgson Burnett shares some amazing insights into human nature with the reader. My daughter exclaimed at one point, “How can Mary see that Colin is spoiled but not see that she was the same at first too?†Led to some great discussions for sure! I also thought it was amazing that Burnett at times switches between different third person limited perspectives and we even have some of the events in the garden narrated from the point of view of the robin! Such clever writing!Some reviewers complained about the fact that many of the characters speak with a Yorkshire accent and Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote it phonetically the way the characters pronounced the words. I thought it added to the fun! I tried to speak with the broad Yorkshire accent as I read it out loud and changed my voice for the different characters. My daughter and I both loved it. The Yorkshire dialect was interesting and we have been trying to throw some of the words we learned into conversation such as “wick†meaning alive or lively. From my point of view, that beats trying to throw something modern like “on fleek†into conversation!
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were very well developed. The story was interesting, it was difficult to put down the book. The writing style, the description of events... you name it.. everything is just perfect. Thus it deserves a 5 star rating.This was my first ever kindle in motion ebook and it was good enough not know what exactly to expect. Say 10-15 pictures with motion in a book with around 21 chapters and over 250 pages. There were very few pages with illustration in motion (not many) and others with sketches of flowers. There were branches on all corners of each page and i loved that as the story proceeds, those blanches are full of leaves and flowers.I enjoyed reading this book and I hope you do too. I never read this as a child, and I think I'm glad. Reading it now, as an over-60, garden-loving mom with lots of life experience, I think I appreciate it a lot more, although I would have loved the mystery as a kid. Now I can appreciate the serious racism, the sad child(ren) neglect, the rather pagan awakening to nature (clothed as "Magic"), and the joyous, if obvious, ending. I believe the writing was very good for its time, and had no problem with the Yorkshire dialect. Mary and Colin and Dickon all struck me as very believable characters, and the changes wrought in Mary and Colin were overall pretty credible, although they happened a bit too quickly. I had more of a problem with Archibald's rejection of his son for ten whole years. Dwelt just a bit much on the beauty and changeableness of the moors. Well worth reading.

This book give you an insight of her life and the suffering her family when thought and will still go though.
...read this with my daughter when we visited Denver. By the time we visited the memorial site, she had learned that Cassie died. The book, like the memorial is so uplifting and positive. No grudges here, only hope for healing and a renewed sense of community. Beautiful book, if hard. When this came out, school shootings were still rare. In fact Columbine is the first I remember. Now they're a common occurrence. I think this family's story can be a great tool in helping your kid grapple with this ugly truth, and still have a sense of hope
I finished this book over 3 weeks ago and couldn't put it down until I had finished it. It was a very powerful 2 hours at which I would find myself crying. I don't believe the message is to doubt whether or not Cassie said "yes" but whether or not YOU have the faith to believe in God and to always put God first in your life. I have passed this book on to my Mom and she has passed it on to others....hopefully down the line it will touch each person as it has touched me. To re-examine my own life and my relationship with Christ and how I will help my two beautiful sons grow up to be spiritually wonderful people.

I think that anyone who truly want's to know what it's like to get your child through tough times, this book is for you.Cassie's mom wrote this book and included letters from friends, and family. It's not a book about the fact of whether Cassie said yes in the library or not. It's a book about the fact that Cassie said yes in her life! That fact is what is important here, nothing else. I personally believe that if the murderers DIDN'T ask Cassie, it doesn't matter, she believed in Jesus Christ and had grown to love him as we all should. I only wish that the teens that I work with in my church were as strong in their faith as Cassie was in hers.I recently attended NCYC, National Catholic Youth Conference, in St. Louis. At the conference, there was a student from Columbine who gave a talk, and explained the ordeals of that day. She told us that the love of Christ was truly present because many MANY more people were supposed to die that day, but didn't. She also said that because of this tragedy many people have turned to God. It's sad to think that it takes a tragedy to get people to turn to Him, but perhaps that's why they happen.At any rate, this book was written by a mother in grief. I personally don't care if she does make the most of this tragedy that she has suffered through. Write a book, make a movie, whatever. Many people, including prisoners make the most of their stories to get through things. They make a ton of money doing it too, but so what? If it gets our attention and helps us understand, isn't that what matters? I think she earned the right to get through her grief any way that she can. And in this book she is doing that, while at the same time she is providing those of us involved with youth an insight to the results that "Tough Love" can provide.Read this book, or don't read it, it's your choice. However, don't criticize the author for taking the courage to write it because her daughter "might not" have said yes in the Library just before her death. The fact of the matter is, she DID say yes in her life.God bless you all.

The book is much smaller than I expected, would be much more enjoyable and easy to use if it were quite a bit larger. Content is not quite what I was expecting, either.
I've recently discovered pastels and have devoured as many books as I can find on the subject. To date this one is the best. The information is provided in clear, short points. The illustrations are large and numerous - and show what the author is explaining well. There is also some exploration of artistic techniques and how they can be applied specifically to pastel work. In comparison to other books on the subject I find this book manages to give all the important information in an efficient, easy to read way. It is also a relatively small, spiral bound book so it's easy to keep the page open, to carry and store. The section on colours and colour mixing is something I will refer to again and again. Very happy with this purchase!
A general review on pastels, good for a beginner to this medium. Has some techniques, but are to brief to be of any use to the beginner. There are better books available on pastel techniques.

Educational. I have read and gone back several times looking for instructions.
I have worked in pastels on and off for over 50 years and I was looking for a book to help me catch up on the latest techniques and what materials were available. I found this book to be very concise and helpful it is well laid out and the information in it is very credible the illustrations are both colorful and well done and are good examples of what is being expressed in words. I highly recommend this for anyone starting in pastel work because it is simple and well laid out and easy to follow. I also recommend it for anyone who has worked in pastel but has not worked in it for the last few years.
Loved this book reminded me of the many techniques I learned in college. A very good course review, with many pictures to demonstrate the techniques to the reader.
