Review

Winner of the Bateson Book Prize awarded by the Society for Cultural Anthropology“One of the year’s most influential books. Graeber situates the emergence of credit within the rise of class society, the destruction of societies based on ‘webs of mutual commitment’ and the constantly implied threat of physical violence that lies behind all social relations based on money.” —Paul Mason, THE GUARDIAN  “The book is more readable and entertaining than I can indicate... It is a meditation on debt, tribute, gifts, religion and the false history of money. Graeber is a scholarly researcher, an activist and a public intellectual. His field is the whole history of social and economic transactions.” —Peter Carey, THE OBSERVER"An alternate history of the rise of money and markets, a sprawling, erudite, provocative work."—Drake Bennett, BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK"[A]n engaging book. Part anthropological history and part provocative political argument, it's a useful corrective to what passes for contemporary conversation about debt and the economy."—Jesse Singal, BOSTON GLOBE "Fresh... fascinating... Graeber’s book is not just thought-provoking, but also exceedingly timely."—Gillian Tett, FINANCIAL TIMES (London)"Remarkable."—Giles Fraser, BBC RADIO 4"Terrific... In the best anthropological tradition, he helps us reset our everyday ideas by exploring history and other civilizations, then boomeranging back to render our own world strange, and more open to change."—Raj Patel, THE GLOBE AND MAIL"An amazing debut – conversational, pugnacious, propulsive"—TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION (UK)"Graeber's book has forced me to completely reevaluate my position on human economics, its history, and its branches of thought. A Marxism without Graeber's anthropology is beginning to feel meaningless to me."—Charles Mudede, THE STRANGER"The world of borrowing needs a little demystification, and David Graeber's Debt is a good start."—THE L MAGAZINE"Controversial and thought-provoking, an excellent book."—BOOKLIST"This timely and accessible book would appeal to any reader interested in the past and present culture surrounding debt, as well as broad-minded economists."—LIBRARY JOURNALPraise for David Graeber“I consider him the best anthropological theorist of his generation from anywhere in the world.”—Maurice Bloch, Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics "A brilliant, deeply original political thinker."—Rebecca Solnit, author of A Paradise Built in Hell“If anthropology consists of making the apparently wild thought of others logically compelling in their own cultural settings and intellectually revealing of the human condition, then David Graeber is the consummate anthropologist. Not only does he accomplish this profound feat, he redoubles it by the critical task—now more urgent than ever—of making the possibilities of other people’s worlds the basis for understanding our own.” —Marshall Sahlins, Charles F. Grey Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago

About the Author

David Graeber teaches anthropology at the London School of Economics. He has written for Harper’s, The Nation, Mute, and The New Left Review. In 2006, he delivered the Malinowski Memorial Lecture at the London School of Economics, an annual talk that honors “outstanding anthropologists who have fundamentally shaped the study of culture.” One of the original organizers of Occupy Wall Street, Graeber has been called an “anti-leader of the movement” by Bloomberg Businessweek. The Atlantic wrote that he “has come to represent the Occupy Wall Street message...expressing the group’s theory, and its founding principles, in a way that truly elucidated some of the things people have questioned about it.”

I was really disappointed in this book. It came recommended from a friend and I was hoping for some new ideas or insights around money and economics. It really is just a nonsensical ramble of which I was not able to eke out much. This review is the least I can do to warn others to not repeat my money and time waste. The author spends a lot of time at the beginning critiquing the "myth" of barter (that two paragraph parable at the beginning of 8th grade economics manuals - of how people would try to barter and thus discover it would be easier to use money). He builds this two paragraph parable into a huge straw-man, calling it the "founding myth of economics" which he proceeds to attack. That's his attempt to take down the discipline of economics (pls. note I am not calling it a science). That's like taking down anatomy because the anatomy drawings in the 6th grade manual are not accurate. The barter parable is meant to illustrate that any transactions (barter, credit, taxes etc) are nearly impossible without a universal unit of measure for value exchanged. Which is money. The parable uses the example of barter for a transaction because it is much easier for 8th graders to imagine that rather than more complicated transactions such as credit and taxes. He argues that anthropologists found no societies without money in which significant volumes of barter exists. Of course they did not. Without money it is impossible to keep track of the price of everything against everything. Which is the point the barter parable is trying to make in a simplistic way.Next the author argues that money is tied to credit transactions (including taxes) and that credit and money are really like the chicken and the egg. Of course they are. Credit transactions are exchanges of value with a time lag. Without a way to quantify the value exchanged they are nearly impossible to make (just like barter). And of course money is not coins. Coins are just symbols for money just like bank notes. The radical idea found by the author is that exchanges of value (trading goods, trading value in time as in credit, paying taxes) are impossible without a way to measure that value. Which btw. is exactly what the economists' parable of barter is trying to say too.All of this is peppered with random anthropological accounts, quotes from Nietzsche, quotes from some french economists about our primordial debt to gods, cries that our lives have become a "series of commercial transactions", and nonsensical expressions such as "bourgeois assumptions" (really? bourgeois?).The intent is to argue that money was involved in almost everything bad people did to each other through history and therefore there's something mysterious and bad about money (debt = money = slavery = capitalism = bad, or something like that). But wooden sticks, metals, clothes, and pretty much everything else including language were also involved in pretty much everything bad some people did to some other. So why single out money? Because it is an abstract concept, and abstract and invisible things draw weak minds like candles draw moths.Ever wonder why loonies come up with perpetual motion machines involving electricity and magnetism a lot more often than involving mechanics or thermodynamics? For the same reason - electricity and magnetism, just like money, are invisible and mysterious. Easier to make up fantasies about.

Graeber's book is a long, slow read, yet it is a fascinating page-turner for which I enjoyed EVERY SINGLE PAGE. I would highly recommend this five-star book to anyone who enjoys investigating the mysteries of economics in our modern world and to anyone who enjoys history, sociology, anthropology, or looking for major historical trends which tie together and explain world events.I saw a few critical reviews while reading this book, and now that I have finished, my opinion is that anyone who negatively reviews this book only read a portion of it. Most of the critical reviews are dismissive of his "point-of-view" as being "wrong." However, anyone who has actually read the whole book realizes that he has stepped back and looked at these issues from multiple perspectives and through the lens of multiple disciplines. People who are upset by this book (or by the introductory chapters) are upset because today's economics teaching focuses only on a small piece of the "economics thought pie" (my term) which is out there. Graeber steps out into discussing pieces which are less covered (or not covered at all) in typical economics classes in the West of today. So, rather than reading through his arguments, and seeing where they wind up by reading the whole book, I am certain these people gave up only part-way into the book, and then wrote a negative review because the ideas are different (much wider and more complicated) than they have been taught, and they find it "out of their paradigm" and just can't accept reading further. Yet, anyone should be able to read alternative ideas that challenge traditional ideas in order to see if their beliefs really stand up under scrutiny. So much information is packed into Debt: The First 5,000 Years, that it could easily have been written as five separate stand-alone books. As an anthropologist at the London School of Economics, Graeber wrote a massive, sprawling history of debt, credit, and the development of markets and money; he ties it to war, slavery, taxes, tribute, government bureaucracy, religious thought, and both local and international trade, by looking at societies from ancient Mesopotamia, to India, to China, to ancient Greece and Rome, to Latin America, to the Middle Ages, and to the Modern Ages. Why did he do it this way? Several reasons. First, as an anthropologist, he felt he was in a unique position to help us completely rethink our sense of the rhythms of economic history. Economists and historians, he points out, normally come at history in opposite directions. "Economists tend to come at history with their mathematical models--and the assumptions about human nature that come along with them--already in place: it's largely a matter of arranging the data around equations. Historians .....often refuse to extrapolate at all; in the absence of direct evidence.....they will not ask whether it is reasonable to make (certain) assumptions....this is why we have so many "histories of money" that are actually histories of coinage....Anthropologists, in contrast, are empirical--they don't just apply preset models--but they also have such a wealth of comparative material at their disposal they CAN actually speculate about what village assemblies in Bronze Age Europe or credit systems in ancient China were likely to be like. And they can reexamine the evidence to see if it confirms or contradicts their assessment." Second, as a admirer of French anthropologist Marcel Mauss, by writing this book, Graeber feels he has put to rest the real "pet peeve" of anthropologists everywhere--the myth of barter. I found this a shocking idea when introduced to it at the beginning of the book, but he has really convinced me as a reader through his extensive and comprehensive looks at every possible facet of this question.I will try to summarize in one paragraph the large sweeping ideas covered in this book. What is money, really? What determines what gets used as money, and why? Certain historical ages operated on mutual credit systems, with practically no coinage at all in circulations (for hundreds or even thousands of years at a time); other ages operated with coin made out of various precious metals. What were the differences between the types of ages when these different types of systems occurred in societies around-the-world, and what were the causes of these differences? Historically, when did these various ages occur, and why? What is happening now, and is the current situation in the world changing? We seem to have recently entered a new age of credit, but in many ways, completely unlike past ages of credit, with historical trends now completely reversed between creditors and debtors compared to past credit ages. How does war and slavery factor into all of this? What is capitalism and how did it come about? Does it really work as it claims to? What are the problems and myths associated with capitalism? What does faith and credit in government and society mean, and what has it meant throughout all historical ages around-the-world? These are just a few of the book's largest questions. Now I will touch on what this book meant to me personally. As an American living overseas in North Africa, I really enjoyed his discussion of how credit was handled during the Middle Ages in Europe, with most people living on credit in regards to each other. It reminded me of the system we even continue to use in North Africa, even in cities, with the merchants at the corner stores (which are our societal equivalents of 7-11 stores). Each family has a notebook which they bring with them to the store each time they want to purchase something. The merchant notes it in the book, and accounts are settled up at the end of the month. Without cash or coin available to most of the populace in the European Middle Ages, everyone operated on such bases with their neighbors, everyone kept accounts, and accounts were settled up in the whole village once or twice a year, usually at specific times or festivals. I found this really interesting. Many such examples from the book meant something to me in my own life, but they would be too numerous to list here. The price of this paperback was one for which I got more than my money's worth, many times over, for the many pleasurable hours of reading, and all I learned, in a highly-enjoyable and extremely well-written text. I wish I could sit in on David Graeber's class. Be prepared--you will want to discuss this book with friends, so try to get a friend or a book club group to read it with you.

Reading this book has given me an understanding of world history at a level I have never reached before. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in world history. At the same as reading this book, I was also reading books by Fools Crow, Crow Dog and Bear Heart. Each of these authors describe how the Federal Government set out to use debt to subjugate and eradicate Native Americans just as described in Graeber's book.

The beautiful cover & blub caught my interest, and I knew I had to read this book. This is the first book I have read by this author, & I must say that she did a marvelous job. Emerge had a very intriguing storyline and the characters were relatable and not over the top. I loved all of the Norse mythology and lore mixed in with real-world problems like homelessness and mental health issues. I really enjoyed that while some aspects of this book were little predictable, it did have some twist & turns. This book is a slow burn RH, with some F/F sparks but nothing further. I think this is an excellent book to kick-off a new series, & I can’t wait to keep up with it and see where the story leads!!

This book pulled me right in. It kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 was because there are a lot of unanswered questions. I am really hoping this will turn into a series. I see the potential this book has as a series. Plus, I want to know the answer to a few of my questions.

I would love a series of Gwen! It has everything: a shelter girl learning to fend for herself, groups of people coming together because of their connections (even though some fight against it), you have the jealous girl trying to ruin things (sucks for you Barb), being possessed and so much more.Definitely recommend and should read!

The cover is beautiful and I thought the blurb was interesting, however, once read I found myself lost in too much unexplainable info. I also lost track of who was who by the middle of the book due to the constantly shifting first person views and stopped reading at 75%.

I liked this book but I hate so many unanswered questions. I am excited to read about the rest of the series but a little hesitant at the same time. The characters are okay, but weren't fully developed and sometimes I found Gwen's attitude a little bratty considering the circumstances. However, the concept is new and interesting and looks like it will lead to some exciting plot and character development in the future! I think, and hope, that as the series grows, so will the characters.

There are so many books out there of teenagers finding they have some special fairy power and being confused about everything. This is so not one of those books.Dark, gritty and painfully honest, this is a story that you're going to love.Warning, contains elements that can trigger sensitive readers. xx

I couldn’t keep myself submerged into the story line. I didn’t like the authors narration between the characters. To me it felt a little choppy and stilted. I wished this book had better flow. But the story premise was interesting.

This book really impressed me. It is very well written and I really liked how well the characters were developed. The characters are complex and have a lot of unique characteristics. Some of the secrets are revealed but there is a lot more to come and I would love to read more.

I was reluctant to read this series for years but I finally did because I've read so many reviews that said this trilogy was Robin Hobb's best. I have to disagree. She reached for a big, sweeping epic and lost her way at the final leg of journey - kind of like a dragon trying to reach the spawning grounds and failing.Hobb's expertise lies in creating distinctive and vivid characters and involved political plot lines. There are four different geographies in play: rainwilds, bing town, Pirate isles and jamaillia. There are different people factions: rainwilds, bing town traders, new town traders, the tatooed, the three ship families, pirates, Chalced mercenaries, the Satrop and his companions not to mention dragon and serpents. Then we have the politics from large to small: internal civil war in Jamaillia, aggression from Chalced, the maneuvering of the Bingtown factions, the relationship of the rainwilds with the rest of the world, the unification of the pirate isles and the impact that dragons may have on everything. Then we have the personal stories and interpersonal conflict between key families. That's a lot of moving parts and pieces.Book three begins with most characters in chaos. Bing town is destroyed. The Vestrit family is beleaguered and rumored to be traitors to the traders. Malta, the self centered and selfish girl is in a desperate situation - she must learn to think of others or die. Althea, a doggedly singleminded person incapable of truly imagining the hopes and dreams of others must face a future that might be different from the one she always thought she wanted. Athea and Etta have put their hopes and identities into thier loves - Althea a ship and Etta a man. But what happens when that need for love is not reciprocated? Will the pirate King Kennit achieve his dreams and who will he sacrifice to get what he wants. Will we ever know what truly drives him? Wintro has given his heart and loyalty to Kennit. Will that blind him to Kennit's ruthlessness and turn him from the compassion of Sa? The dragon and her serpents are desperate to reach the turning grounds, but the serpents grow weak and the way is blocked. Tintinaglia cannot find and safeguard the serpents on her own. Will she be able to compel humans to aid her? What's really up with Amber? What's the deal with Kennit's wizardwood charm?Hobb's story gets ever more rich as she creates such distinctive places and people. The storyline is complicated, but you could feel the build up. But in the last 20% of the book, It is like Hobb jumped on a dragon's back to fly through the rest of the story. A huge political tangle is solved in a few meetings. Suddenly characters that were too dense to know themselves or others for three books suddenly saw the light. I know that is somewhat Hobb's style. She builds up tension and then when the dam bursts everything rushes to conclusion. But some of the conclusions are wholly unsatisfactory. Why did she keep Kyle alive for book 3? We learned so much about Wintro's struggle with his life and his relationship with Kennit. But he is basically another Soccor at the end...a first mate to his own story and his own ethics. The story introduces us to the reintroduction of dragons to the world....but skips over the story and goes right to the 'happily ever after' end.Certainly there are a lot of loose ends to leave plenty of room for news books, but after such derailed story telling, this seems like the author got bored and just decided to end it.SPOILER below......For those of you who know another identity for Amber, I struggled with her role here. She seemed to be the catalyst here. It was she who tamed Paragon, she who provided the funds to buy him, she that created the spy network of slaves, etc. At first I thought it was Paragon that was the catalyst to choose a different identity for himself, but in all honesty, nearly every character became someone else. Etta the whore-queen. Wintro the priest-pirate. Brashen the screw up-captain. Keffria the passive mouse-ambassador and leader. The ones that died didn't change. While I LOVE the Fool, here his machinations take away from the story for me. On one hand it shows how hard it is to choose the path that will change the world, but on another, it feels like telling the Fool's story through a veil...that all the other characters and plot lines exist so you can get glimpses of the prophet's story.

The Liveship Traders trilogy is an epic piece of storytelling by Robin Hobb. I was completely enthralled by all three books. Despite how long and complex this story is, there are very few slow, boring parts. I even enjoyed the discourse of the sea serpents (I'll admit I'm a very patient reader). The first book, Ship of Magic, was my favorite because of the way in which the story unfolded quickly and unexpectedly. Mad Ship and Ship of Destiny were slower to develop and were more predictable but were excellent nevertheless. However, I have some criticism. Stop here and come back later if you haven't finished the series. The character of Kennit was flawed in my opinion. Throughout the story, he oscillates between being a scheming, greedy, cutthroat pirate and a wise, gentle philanthropist. You never know whether you should hate him or love him. Will he eventually fall into the flames of a moral abyss? Or will he ascend as a selfless hero? Well, in the end, he's a raping, malicious thug consumed by his primal lust and abused childhood. I expected him to die a harrowing, morbid death to pay for his evil deeds. Instead, he dies rather instantly and stupidly by accidentally taking a sword for the Satrap while trying to steal him back from the Jamaillians. Worse still, his name becomes honored as the sage king who sacrificed himself. Boo!Just as bad is the role of Kyle Haven. He's a controlling tyrant who blames everyone else for the consequences of his own stupid, greedy decisions. His son Wintrow understandably hates him and never thinks twice when Kennit exiles him in chains. But why didn't Kennit just kill him? Why leave him on that island with his mother? Well, you would think it's because Hobb is saving him for a critical cog in the plotline, but what happens? Inexplicably, Kennit's mother takes him with her to "the showdown", and then while all the fighting is going on, he gets killed incidentally by indiscriminate enemy arrows. Pardon the pun, but what was the point? Moreover, throughout the second and third books, Malta (a teenager and the only one who loves Kyle) dreads and grieves over the unknown fate of her father, but she never reunites with him, and when she learns of his death, she callously shrugs it off and goes about her business of deftly negotiating a truce between the warring factions. Weird. One more picky point. Throughout the story, the Rain Wilders are depicted as being so grotesque they have to wear veils and gloves to not shock others. But at the end, Reyn and Malta are depicted as "exotic", with their scales being considered attractive and the Jamaillians taking up fashion that mimics their look. Strange?? It never was clear to me why the Rain Wilders had to be scaly, anyway.Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride through this adventure, and I liked the way it all settled out in the "D-day" episode. I think the Liveship Traders is better than the Farseer trilogy (which had quite a wimpy ending).

Was I happy about the Liveship Traders saga? Yes I was! The proof in the pudding was simply for me that I had hard time putting any of these 3 books down. Was I fully satisfied? Mostly because she did a good job providing a suitable ending yet, there was a sudden rush towards the end of the book to get there. It is as if she was still cruising in her story and suddenly was told to finish with the last 30 pages. So she did not leave much stone unturned but in the same time, considering how long the saga was, the ending felt a bit rushed...

Just one reader's opinion here. Robin Hobb is not anything if not verbose (overly descriptive narrative) in her style. Still, I love the fantasy genre and she is one of the authors to read. I typically read all the trilogies of an author before moving on to another author. The live ship trilogy had me wanting the story to speed up or add more twists and turns to keep my interest more often than I would like. I'm actually glad to be moving on to her next set of books.

" . . . useful, while Indian in origin, the astrological signs, houses, and planets are the same. As manyl of our readers may know, it is speculated that some, or maybe even all, of Western astrology can find its roots in India via the Arabs." (Institute of Hermetic Studies, Jan 2009)

DESIGN / HINDUISM What makes a house a home, a place of renewal and refuge, a place of balance and peace? It is vaastu, the Indian art of environmental design, a practice that helps you create a home that is in harmony with the natural and spiritual energies surrounding it. Vaastu, like holistic medicine, focuses on addressing underlying issues for the health of the entire system--the people as well as the physical structures and property on which they live. The Vaastu Workbook not only provides the blueprint for a perfect vaastu home but also fully explains the tradition within its Indian context. It presents vaastu as it was meant to be understood--as an interconnected part of the great Indian tradition of sacred knowledge, along with ayurveda, yoga, and vedic astrology. Using more than 140 line illustrations, along with charts for scoring the vaastu of a particular site, The Vaastu Workbook allows you to apply this knowledge to quickly assess the pros and cons of any building situation. The author, who is the director of the foremost vaastu center in India, takes you through every conceivable vaastu situation, exploring the dos and don’ts of window and door placement, interior design, street focus, directional facing, landscaping, and much more, in order to maximize the potential of a given property. He shares his own personal experiences and the circumstances of others to illustrate the power of vaastu in action. Introductory chapters provide a thorough grounding in the basics of Indian astrology, the five elements, and the healing tradition of ayurveda, all of which are necessary to truly understand the importance of angles and quadrants in vaastu. He also discusses the difference between vaastu and feng shui and reviews frequently asked questions about vaastu principles. With this knowledge in hand, even a beginner can quickly learn how to design a new home--or renovate an existing one--in order to bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to those who live there. DR. TALAVANE KRISHNA practiced medicine in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for twenty years before returning to India. He now directs the Indus Valley Ayurvedic Center (IVAC) in Mysore. The center is situated on fifteen acres, with an accompanying eight acres of gardens containing over eight hundred species of medicinal plants. In April 2001, the center was recognized as the Best Global Model in Alternative Medicine--Ayurveda, and the center is now certified for a Ph.D. program in Yoga Ayurveda. Dr. Krishna spends part of each year in the San Diego area with his wife and family. In addition to his work at the IVAC, he gives vaastu consultations and lectures around the world.

One of the very good books on traditional vastu.

Very good book! In each chapter it gives in simple words the explanation of the good and bad situation of the specific topic. But I wish it could have stated also more in depth about the logic and background understanding of how that specific Vaastu came to the appropriate setting, since I am an architect wanting to understand why Vaastu has this settings.I recommend this book for architects or interested readers that want to know what Vaastu Shastra is all about.

along with some inaccuracies about vastu and feng shui. there are better books on the market.

I find it a bit complicated to understand for the beginner.

I found this book to be rather helpful, well structured, practical and interesting. Now I try to change some things in my environment due to it. Our home, our work place, smells, noises, colors and objects around us can help us be more concentrated and persistent or otherwise. And we really need some structure, some firm principles to organize our space well. And this book will help. Also I liked that the principles of aurveda is also used in it.

Thank You !

We are in the process of building a home and I went through several vastu books. This is a very well written vastu book. It has clearly identified the placement of all rooms, staircases, doors and all the other internal and external living areas. Most of the other books are not so clear.

It gives a good idea of Vastu principles.

Well written and detailed book about Italy. I felt as though I was along for the journey with Debbie. I couldn't put the book down with the first mention of the plastic covers on her mom's couch. Having an Italian dad and Irish mom, I am not quite sure where the plastic covers came from in my family. Too funny! It is an easy read and would recommend to all. Thumbs up to Debbie for making her dream of writing the book come true. .I am ready for your next book Debbie!claire

It's an okay read, except this is just as much about the author's life in the USA as about Italy. I would have given an extra star if the book has been edited more intensively before publication (grammar and spelling mistakes). Here and there I lost the thread of the memoir because bits had been left out or not expressed clearly enough. It's quite a personal journey through heartache and happiness, but enjoyable enough. What I kept wondering was why Debbie, so in love with Italy, never made an effort to learn a little of the language, so that she could enjoy her Italian adventures more! She is often hampered by her lack of knowledge of Italian.

This book is a written account of a life spent traveling to different areas of Italy. It is more of a dear diary rather than a true travel book, but that is what makes it an interesting read (or frustrating). The first issue l have with the book is that there are no photos of Italy ( they are found on a webpage). If l had known that the book did not include pictures, l would have just bought the Kindle edition for 1/2 the price of the paperback. The second issue is that the author starts ideas and doesn’t expand upon them. She seems to go off track with different personal issues many times and then drops her line of thought leaving the reader hanging and wondering why, what, when, where and how. For example, she writes about her fiancé many times and says that he was in prison for 8 years, but doesn’t tell us why.In this book the author tells us two stories, her personal life and her life traveling back and forth to Italy. The author should have stuck to either one of her stories.. her life travels or her personal life. It seems as though either story could fill a book. I wish she had focused on one story line when writing this book and expanded on the theme.I have read in other reviews the complaint of the lack of editing and the over use of the punctuation mark ! This does not bother me, because l give the author credit for publishing this book on her own.The author, Debbie, shows us that we can all follow our dreams at any age, either by traveling to Italy without family as a teen or by publishing her own book as an “older” adult.

I had great hopes for this book as soon as I read the description. Beautiful cover. Great reader reviews. Obviously a winner. As soon as it arrived, I began eagerly reading it. Unfortunately, from the very first page, it was evident that the story was badly written. Still, I soldiered on, hoping that the prose and the weak story line would improve. It never did. When the writer introduces the subject of alcohol enemas as a form of flirtation with a married man, though, one that signals the start of an "usual romance", I felt repulsed and insulted. Add to that occasions of the author smoking dope with her still married lover, and the excitement of vicariously seeing anymore of Italy through this writer's eyes died a vulgar death. I will not waste my time and energy finishing reading this smutty tale. *These days, when I am finished with a book, I usually gift it to the local library. That won't be the case with this sad story...into the trash it goes, right where it belongs. Sorry I wasted my money on it.

A great read. Couldnt put it down. I recommend this to my family and friends.I felt like I was in Italy the whole time! If you love Italy, read this.

What was intended to be my summer read turned into my Sunday read. Loved every page! Debbie shares her experiences from her spaghetti western to realizing the love of her life. I laughed, cried and commensurated. Her descriptions of the Italian countryside and cities made me feel like I was there with her. The only time I put the book down was to go give the gravy a stir. Thank you Debbie!

I read this book in two days, which surprised the hell out of me, since my first thought from the title was I was going to read a soap opera-ish romance novel. I was not expecting to be so absorbed in the story, the people and the author's experiences. I looked forward to finishing it when I got home today. Yes it had romance, but it was never corny. It was raw, touching and at times very funny... even raunchy. I don't want to give anything away, but I will never look at another flight attendant the same way. Terrific read.

Can't say I'm a fan, but a good editor would help. I wanted to learn a lot about Italy, but really didn't. The book is mostly about the author's life. Some of that was endearing, some not. I wish I had a better review because I admire the undertaking this required.

From the Back Cover

Thoughtful and reflective, this best-selling text on marriage and family therapy opens with a groundbreaking discussion of value-sensitive care, the ecology of therapy, and acculturation. Armed with this extensive knowledge and insight, students then delve into the traditional and contemporary issues surrounding marriage and family counseling today, broken down into legal, ethical and professional considerations.   The updated Fifth Edition includes a number of new topics, including multicultural issues reflecting institutional oppression; the significance of supervision in both skill acquisition and professional acculturation in one’s early career; nontraditional family care; conflicts between legal and ethical obligations; emerging issues in MFT licensure; and ethical and empirical considerations related to evidence-based care.   New Features: New Ethical Code – An examination of the 2012 Code of Ethics of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Case examples located in three special chapters allow readers to consider realistic client situations and considerations as they cover related topics and content in the text.  “Reflections” features located throughout the text offer illustrations and accompanying stimulus questions that promote discussions and thought in graduate classes, group settings, or other forums of professional dialogue.  A revised discussion of value-sensitive care and the ecology of therapy concerning layers of values and sources of power within families allow readers to examine the distinct and often competing personal and systemic factors affecting their care for clients.  An emphasis on professional acculturation in decision-making provides pre-service counselors with a unique framework for examining dissonance and finding balance in the personal and professional roles of therapists.   An examination of mandatory versus discretionary actions in ethical behavior helps students distinguish between the compelling requirements in ethical codes versus their responsible freedom for judgment based on their professional acculturation in ethical decision-making.  An expanded discussion of multicultural concerns give readers the opportunity to consider both established and novel strategies for increasing their culturally sensitive care with individuals, couples, and families.  Coverage of emergent legal issues and recent court cases give readers the opportunity to contemplate their existing therapy, supervisory, instructional, or research practices in light of contemporary legal decisions.  Coverage of new professional issues and research allow readers to reflect upon the most current information affecting their professional identity, options for professional development, and anticipated challenges for care with individuals, couples, and families. A revised format and updated references provides students with an even more thoughtful presentation of information as well as a significant number of new references and resources.

Horrible. Do nooot rent under any circumstance.

I have used this book in the ethics class I teach, but be aware that the AAMFT Code of Ethics was updated again since this edition was published. After 11 years with no revisions, AAMFT revised its Code of Ethics in 2012 and again in 2015, so I feel for the authors having to try to keep up with this - they revised the 5th edition to incorporate the 2012 Code of Ethics revision. I'm really hoping the authors revise this again as they have done a great job in this and in earlier editions.

This is an awesome resource,,,unfortunately windows 8 does not support on kindle so I had to use my little computer to access...The read is very direct with lots of practice examples...a must read for any person going into this field of expertise...Highly recommend!

This book was required reading form my class on Marriage and Family Ethics. I was not too excited about reading yet another book on ethics, but once I started looking through the book I saw that this was not your normal dry ethics book. It had case studies that brought context and covered all the new changes in laws and polices that are current. It even covers other professional issuers for counselors such as supervision and licensure. I recommend this book if you want to be up to date in your practice. In the appendix it also includes sample documents for privacy polices and disclosure forms to help the clinician create their own that is up to standards. The most helpful part for me was a diagram of a decision tree, to help guide ethical decision making.

Interesting, if somewhat dense.

This book is very helpful to understand legal issues when working with clients.

I am very disappointed with the quality of this book. it seems like it was drawn in water. this book has highlighted all over.

Easy reader and it has the information needed
